3 WELCOME TO THE REDTWIST SEASON warm welcome to our tiny black box in the Bryn Mawr A Historic District. The roster of plays is our 14th full season in the great neighborhood of Edgewater and we plan to stay here for a long-time. This homey space provides the perfect blend of explosive intimacy, flexibility, and coziness, which have become the signature traits of Redtwist Theatre. Also this season, our Associate Artistic Director, James Fleming, made his directorial debut at Redtwist. Over the past two years, James has been an integral part of many shows as Assistant Director, and in 17-18, he is the Director of our season opener (Our Town) and our season closer (Sagittarius Ponderosa). In addition, he is the primary architect of this entire season of exciting plays, which includes three premieres. After Our Town, a Chicago premiere called, I Saw My Neighbor On The Train And I Didn t Even Smile, features Redtwist leading ladies, Jacqueline Grandt and Kathleen Ruhl, whom you might have last seen together in Good People, in the summer of The cast includes Redtwist company member and Jeff-nominee, Adam Bittterman, along with guest artists Emma Maltby, Josh Servantez, and John Blick. The third show this season is Surely Goodness and Mercy, featuring a terrific team of guest artists in a Rolling World Premiere, sponsored by the National New Play Network, of which Redtwist is a proud Associate Member. The show is directed by Wardell Julius Clark, who is an Associate Artist at TimeLine Theatre Company, and an Associate Artist with the Black Lives, Black Words theatre collective. The talented cast includes Renee Lockett, Katrina Richard, Donovan Session, and Charlita Williams. The fourth show is a revival of a recent blockbuster, Frost/Nixon, which documents the cat-and-mouse planning of this legendary historical television event, as well as the many critical moments from the interviews themselves. Redtwist s award-winning leading man, Brian Parry, takes on the role of Richard Nixon under the direction of Redtwist company member, Scott Weinstein, who has become one of the most acclaimed directors in Chicago over the past few years with his productions of Titanic, Batboy, Rent, and Ragtime, along with his Redtwist shows, All-American, Drawer Boy, and Circle Mirror Transformation. If you are a frequent patron, we sincerely appreciate all your support over the years. You re the reason why we re still here. If you are seeing a show here for the first or second time, we truly hope you enjoy our exciting brand of up-close, explosive theatre in a warm, cozy storefront in the grand Chicago tradition. 5 Director s Notes The lives of the women you are about to watch are tragic which is another way of saying hilarious. Broken families, fractured relationships, and lost loves litter their lives. In order to cope with all that they have endured, they have learned to get by. They have learned to pull their collars up and cast their gaze to the road directly in front of them, like a Chicago native deftly navigating the streets in -15 degree wind chill. To look forward would sting and hurt too much; best to focus only on what is immediately in front you. Crack a joke instead of having a conversation or break a rule instead of making friends. The problem with keeping your eyes to the ground is that it is easy to lose your way. You miss a sign. You take a wrong turn. You fail to keep in mind where you are going. Getting by stings less in the moment, which is why it is a prized survival skill. But used too often, you will end up far from where you intended. These women have been getting by for most of their lives. They have settled too long for temporary fixes which has made them equal parts strong and brittle. These women must learn how to explore. Exploring means to look at something or someone not just in order to determine whether to pivot left or right before leaving, but to go deeper in the hopes of finding value. Exploring is riskier than getting by but I guess that s why history books are full of Explorers and not Getting By-ers. We sit with these women as they learn to take the risk and explore the world and people around them including each other. They say that Comedy is Tragedy plus Time. This play is Tragic in this play because it is a play about women and women lead lives of unspoken hardship and invisible labor. These women come to realize that the time has come to get past their failures, often using the most important survival skill, laughter. Thank you for joining this exploration and we encourage you to survive, too. Erin Murray, Director Redtwist s Season The Way We Are is a season-long snapshot with today s faces. It s about familiar people who navigate timeless challenges. What we do informs who we are in our growing up, and in our living, and in our dying. Upcoming Show #3 in the Season Surely Goodness and Mercy by Chisa Hutchinson Directed by Wardell Julius Clark Feb 17 to Mar 18, 2018 (Previews Feb 14, 15, 16) A Rolling World Premiere. A powerful new drama with incredible heart and humor. Tino is a Newark schoolboy sent to live with an abusive aunt after his mother dies protecting him in a street fight. Seeking solace, Tino befriends the cantankerous lunch lady at school who has been diagnosed with MS. The moving, heartwarming climax shows these two unlikely friends helping each other navigate a harsh world. 5
