1 Issue 16 January 2015 The Exciting Vocational Day Service for Adults with Learning Disabilities Well done, everyone! There was a bit of excitement at Kingsland recently when a van in the car park caught fire - thankfully nobody was hurt but there were tall flames and lots of smoke. The building was evacuated, just in case, and the fire brigade arrived to put out the flames. Everybody at CoCoCare kept calm and nobody panicked. We thought our calm responses deserved a CoCoCare Challenge certificate. Elizabeth, Lewis, Ashley, Laura, Chloe, Agnes, Mark and Joe have also received certificates recently for their brilliant personal achievements. Hello and welcome to Guy! CoCoCare, Kingsland Church, 86 London Road, Lexden, Colchester CO3 9DW beth@cococare.co.uk 1
2 We love Christmas at CoCoCare, and try to fit in lots of fun activities and visits. In December we enjoyed trips to see Cinderella at the Mercury as well as Paddington, Penguins of Madagascar and Nativity 3 at the cinema. We saw Butterflies, a colourful dance and film experience at Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich and were able to try out the interactive technology on stage. Paint with your arms, compose lullabies with your feet and chase caterpillars on all fours! On the last day before the Christmas holiday we visited Colchester Zoo, where we stroked reindeer, danced with elves and had an early Christmas dinner. Christmas at CoCoCare Thank you to everybody who bought something from our Christmas stall at Kingsland Church. We sold a range of hand-crafted gifts, cards and slices of delicious Xmas cake. We raised a total of and 8 euro cents towards our second mobility scooter. CoCoCare, Kingsland Church, 86 London Road, Lexden, Colchester CO3 9DW beth@cococare.co.uk 2
3 Karaoke! Singing in the sound-proof karaoke room at Freeport, Braintree. Around the world In 2015, our topic for the year is Around the World. We will be finding out about the customs, food, costumes, art and craft, music and dance, sports, language, flags and geography of different countries. For example, we have already planned a Japanese Tea Ceremony, Bollywood dancing and a Burns Night Celebration. See how we joined in with the Uttarayan Kite Festival on p4. Everyone has made their own Passport and we will add a stamp for each country we visit throughout the year. Is there a country you are interested in? Maybe you have a connection to another country. We would love to hear your ideas for activities. CoCoCare, Kingsland Church, 86 London Road, Lexden, Colchester CO3 9DW beth@cococare.co.uk 3
4 Let s Go Fly a Kite! We recently celebrated Uttarayan, the Indian Kite Flying Festival. We watched a video of people in Gujerati flying thousands of brightly coloured kites from the rooftops and the beach to celebrate the arrival of Spring. We made our own kites from plastic bags and then flew them at Abbey Fields. Unfortunately it was a bit colder than India, but at least the sun was shining. We also tried some delicious Jalebi, a sweet popular in countries of South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and East Africa. It is made by deep-frying a wheat flour batter in pretzel or circular shapes, which are then soaked in sugar syrup.
