Greater Shepparton Women s Charter Alliance Advisory Committee The Greater Shepparton Women s Charter Alliance Committee is a community advisory committee (of the Greater Shepparton City Council)

3 Greater Shepparton Women s Charter Alliance Advisory Committee The Greater Shepparton Women s Charter Alliance Committee is a community advisory committee (of the Greater Shepparton City Council) that is part of a broader network of Local Government Area (LGA) advisory committees across the state that are guided and informed by the Victorian Local Government Women s Charter. The Charter recognises the need to increase women s participation in key decision making forums in the community and in democratic governance. A three point action plan focussing on Diversity, Active Citizenship and Gender Equity guides the key strategic objectives of this committee. The Women's Charter Alliance Advisory Committee is made up of community representatives, Council Officers and is supported by Greater Shepparton City Council. The Women's Charter Alliance Advisory Committee meets monthly and community members are welcome to attend as guests, with an annual intake of members undertaken at the beginning of the financial year. Refugee Week event Wadjda movie night Date Wednesday 18 June 2014, 5.30pm. Venue Village Cinemas, Stewart Street, Shepparton. Movie - Wadjda Wadjda is a 2012 Saudi Arabian film written and directed by Haifaa al-mansour. It is the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and is the first feature length film made by a female Saudi director. Wadjda is a 10-year-old girl living in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun-loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with. After a fight with her friend Abdullah, a neighborhood boy she shouldn't be playing with, Wadjda sees a beautiful green bicycle for sale. She wants the bicycle desperately so that she can beat Abdullah in a race. But Wadjda's mother won't allow it, fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl's virtue. 4 Audience Approximately 170 people attended the event. The audience was made up of mainly women from a range of diverse multicultural backgrounds. The cinema venue seated 184 people. We allocated 184 tickets and had a small waiting list. On the evening approximately 170 people attended. Resources FamilyCare provided resources regarding the various programs they implement. Brochures regarding other local community events were made available. For example: Refugee Week brochures. Accessibility The venue was wheelchair accessible and preferential seating was provided to attendees who had vision requirements. Suppliers The following organisations/businesses provided services: Greater Shepparton City Council Funding and in kind support Cynthia Scott Welcome to Country Mustafas Kebabs Halal catering Village Cinemas Shepparton Venue and film PrintWorks Shepparton Printing and design of posters and numbered tickets Budget The event was entirely funded by the Greater Shepparton City Council. There was in kind support provided, as follows: Greater Shepparton City Council donated some communications, stationery, and staff. Cynthia Scott conducted the Welcome to Country. The Shepparton News provided free event coverage before the event. The organising sub-committee and the Committee as a whole donated their time. Please see Appendix 1 for a full expenditure breakdown. Advertising The following is a list of advertising that was used for the event. Some had a cost, and some was in kind: Flyer distributed by committee members, via and by Council Facebook Paid reach was 6,791. Total reach was 7,628. Of these, 76 people watched the movie trailer, 4 people clicked on the photo. There were 33 likes and 9 people shared the post. Greater Shepparton City Council Cultural Development Officer Charlene Norton. Feedback From Committee member Leanne Raditsas: I wanted to share a heart-warming incident with you guys. When I was packing up the tea and coffee station, a little boy (approx. 10yo) came over to me with a beaming smile on his face and said excuse me, you know I could understand that movie, it was in My language! I said Wow, that s fantastic could you read the subtitles too he said Yep! He was very proud and excited to have attended an event that he could relate to the characters and culture represented in the movie. I asked him if he thought it was ok for girls to ride bikes, and he responded with a very enthusiastic YES!, and then we high-fived. This incident, along with other very positive feedback signals to me, this was truly a great event and was attended and enjoyed by a diverse, enthusiastic and very appreciative crowd. Feedback from an audience member: I am writing to tell you what a great event it was - screening the movie Wadjda. I was most impressed with the ease of upon entering the Theatre, getting tickets and the lovely meal awaiting me upstairs. What a great idea with the food incorporating 'Refugee Week'. Well done to all concerned. I look forward to more great events being staged by this great bunch of women. Feedback from Committee Member Connie O Dea: Congratulations!!! The night went very well the film was well accepted, I think. One could hear a pin drop. I found it to be a mine of information re Saudi Arabia and their culture wrapped in that story. Lessons for 2015 As with any event, some things could be improved next time. Some suggestions are: Start organising and planning well in advance of event. Contact local cinema staff, rather than Melbourne. Originally we were told by the local cinema to contact Melbourne, but difficulties arose from that. M14/35702 Page 5
