1 THE UNICORN SCHOOL Redwood Class LONG TERM PLAN 2018 to 2019 Autumn 2018 AUTUMN 1 English Famous British Authors: Michael Morpugo Text Focus: Warhorse and Private Peaceful In this unit we will be using the book, play and film, Warhorse by Michael Morpurgo as our inspiration. We will be exploring how the author uses language to create character and relationships. We will then build on the theme of war time and relationships with Private Peaceful. Maths Revise and improve: Place Value: 4 Operations and the Order of Operations Algebra: Vocabulary, notation and simplifying. Fractions: Addition and Subtraction of fractions. Improper fractions. AUTUMN 2 POETRY: Poetry from a different culture. Poetry Clusters Exploring poetry and reading aloud. The children will study poems and then use their knowledge, ideas and passion to create their own poems relating to different issues. Fractions: Multiplication and Division of fractions. Simplifying fractions. Percentages: Student led % project.

2 AUTUMN 1 IT Modern Computing in the wider context E Safety Explore social media Pros and cons Twitter, Facebook etc Introduce Privacy and concept of Digital footprint. Science AUTUMN 2 Reinforce the importance of keeping data private in online environment. Explore the risk and consequences of sharing personal information Understanding the Computer Children will be able to explain what computers are and what they do, including the: Input, Process, Output (IPO) Explain How a computer does what you ask- Fetch- Execute-Cycle in groups Introduce the main components, of a computer (internal & External) + Software THE PERIODIC TABLE Children learn how elements in the Periodic Table are listed, looking at the structure of their atoms. They can understand and predict how an element might react or behave in a certain situation. ENERGY AND MAGNETIC FORCES The pupils will be learning about the invisible forces that surround them in their everyday lives.

3 AUTUMN 1 RE Christianity What is the significance in people s lives of key beliefs and concepts about God, humanity, the world, truth and life and death? PSHCE Relationships values, rights and responsibilities We will be discussing types of relationships and focusing on; Why are close relationships important What can make close relationships difficult at times Why is good communication important within a relationship What are your rights and responsibilities within a relationship AUTUMN 2 Christianity To what extent are the concepts of truth, explanation, meaning and purpose in religion and science complementary or conflicting? Friendship: Friendship and developing an approach to anti-bullying. The children will be strengthening their understanding about trust and friendship in different scenarios and stages of life.

4 AUTUMN 1 Art/DT Focus: Introduction to drawing skills Covering: Pencil line and mark making, shading, introduction into perceptive, 3D, Introduction to landscapes AUTUMN 2 3D in sculpture, Perspective, MC Escher, landscapes

5 French AUTUMN 1 Homes and houses. Vocabulary for types of homes, review of numbers and colours. History/Geography ENGLISH CIVIL WARS Was England turned upside down in the seventeenth century? A study of the impact of politics and royal rule during the English civil war. AUTUMN 2 Basic numbers revision Telling the time hour and half past. Daily routines. Christmas traditions. An in-depth study of Cromwell as Lord Protector of England Hero or a villain? Looking at different sources of evidence and identifying historical bias.

6 AUTUMN 1 Music PE Invasion Games Rugby skills and drills at Tilsey Park To become familiar with music for different films and to recognise film genres To learn how some musical features can be combined to create soundtracks for different film genres To perform a film music theme on the keyboard and to adapt it to compose for a film clip Sailing at Farmoor/Ordnance Skills. The children will learn new skills, improve skills already gained and understand the nature of teamwork. AUTUMN 2 Singing traditional and popular Christmas Carols. Opportunities for soloists and group work to perform at the Christmas concert. Hockey at Tilsey Park The children will develop their skills and team tactics in hockey.

7 SPRING 1 Spring 2019 English NARRATIVE Writing. SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND PUNCTUATION Planning a fictional story, planning and refining detail effectively. Understanding the components of narrative We will be using an action-packed story to help develop our planning of characters, settings and storyline. Maths Algebra Substitute numerical values into formulae and expressions, including scientific formulae. Simplify and manipulate algebraic expressions Use algebraic methods to solve linear equations in one variable Understand and use the concepts and vocabulary of inequalities. Developing viewpoint and voice in writing. SPRING 2 Drama/Playscript: Shakespeare Reading and analysing the play, The Tempest. Discuss the characteristics of a playscript. Investigate how Shakespeare built the plot, setting and characters. Become familiar with stage directions and techniques of drama. Geometry Circles and area Convert between cm2 and m2 Derive and apply formulae to calculate and solve problems involving area of circles, composite shapes and trapeziums. Calculate and solve problems involving perimeters of 2-D shapes (including circles).

8 SPRING 1 IT Programming with Scratch. The children will use a variety of coding packages to design increasingly complex instruction-based games. Science HEALTH AND THE HUMAN BODY The pupils will learn how the human respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems function. The importance of a healthy diet and the consequences of imbalances in the diet, including obesity, starvation and deficiency diseases. SPRING 2 Programming with Scratch. The children will use a variety of coding packages to create increasingly complex symmetrical designs. LIGHT AND SOUND The colours and the different frequencies of light, white light and prisms. Creating models to explain the refraction of light and action of convex lens in focusing; the human eye and the pinhole cameras. Understanding sound waves; echoes, reflection and the absorption of sound.

9 SPRING 1 RE SIKHISM We will study the key beliefs within Sikhism, and consider how these beliefs and the actions of Sikhs demonstrate their belief in the Guru Granth Sahib. PSHE/Citizenship Healthy Living: This term shall focus on Healthy Lifestyles and Risk The children will investigate and share their thoughts to understand what PSHE is Using modern studies and news reports the children will explain the meaning of a balanced diet SPRING 2 1. SIKHISM Children will know the origin of Sikhism, the 5 Ks, examples of the teachings and activities of the 10 Gurus, the role of the Gurdwara in reference to equality and tolerance and the importance of Amritsar (the Golden Temple). We will share thoughts about the pressures and problems generated by the misuse of alcohol, drugs and solvents in today's society.

STUDY CHINA Modern day China, the expansion of a World Super Power. Industry and Growth of Cities Population Distribution and Explosion SPRING 2 Vocabulary for clothing, reviewing colours. Use of porter verb. Study of French fashion.

12 SPRING 1 Music To recognise and be able to perform offbeat and syncopated rhythms in calypso and reggae music. To participate in a class performance of a calypso song, arrange own part in a reggae song for small ensemble performance, revise formation of chords made up of white notes (C, G). To learn formation of chords with a black note in the middle (D, E, A) PE Invasion Games Hockey at Tilsey Park SPRING 2 To play Indian ragas (melodic patterns) on the keyboard and to play talas (rhythmic cycles) on unpitched percussion To compose a raga for keyboard using black and white notes with two-note drone To identify features of Indian music Football at Tilsey Park Swimming lessons.

13 Summer 2019 SUMMER 1 English Myths and Legends In this creative unit we will be investigating: Famous British Myths (The Waterhorse and King Arthur) Famous Greek Myths (Theseus and the Minotaur) Reporting on our own mythical beast! Maths Ratio, proportion & rates of change The children will practice and strengthen their understanding and use of standard units [for example time, length, area, volume/capacity, mass] Use ratio notation, including reduction to simplest form. Solve problems involving direct and inverse proportion, including graphical and algebraic representations. Examples may include: SUMMER 2 Refining our reading and writing ability: Letter writing Note taking Comprehension Revision of Parts of Speech Draw and interpret pie charts. Statistics Construct and analyse stem and leaf diagrams. For non-grouped data given in the form of a table, find the mean, median, mode and range. Geometry 3D shapes Use the properties of faces, surfaces, edges and vertices of cubes, cuboids, prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres to solve problems in 3-D. Convert between cm3 and m3 Know and use the fact that 1 litre = 1000cm3

14 SUMMER 1 IT Science EARTH SCIENCE Student-led ICT multimedia project. Modelling: Be aware of the need for modelling and seeing things in three dimensions when designing. Students need to model a new school or a new house - Give students an assignment brief. Show students the basics of Google Sketch up Learning the structure and composition of the earth, rock formation, the carbon cycle and the impact of human development upon these. SUMMER 2 Google Sketch Up, PowerPoint Publisher Spread sheets PLANTS Knowing the adaptations of leaves for photosynthesis, the products of photosynthesis. Identifying features of plant cell structures.

15 SUMMER 1 Buddhism RE PSHE/Citizenship The children will be using a range of forms of expression (such as art and design, music, dance, drama, writing, ICT) to communicate their ideas and responses creatively and thoughtfully. They will be exploring the connections between Buddhism and other subject areas such as the arts, humanities, literature, science. Conflict: A very topical issue, the children will research and discuss what causes conflict and what motivates people to get involved. SUMMER 2 We will support our investigation with the use of news reports to find and evaluate contemporary examples of conflict. Poverty: The children will review key definitions and information about poverty and human rights. they are then introduced to the concept that poverty is a human rights issue

17 SUMMER 1 French Describe yourself Describing others Creating a Wanted poster History/Geography WORLD WAR ONE The class will be looking at the main causes of the Great War and the factors that contributed to the stalemate. We will be concentrating on identifying and analysing the many groups devastated by the war and at the impact of trench warfare. SUMMER 2 French restaurants and café scenes Ask for something in a shop, café or restaurant Rôle play Make food THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION This module will follow on from what we have learned about the First World War and we will study the links between the two events. The children will analyse the historical basis for the revolution and look into the causes of the revolt due to the effects of social injustice.

18 SUMMER 1 SUMMER 2 Music To learn about different genres, composers, instruments & musical forms from the Classical Era ( ) To apply this knowledge to listening to an unfamiliar piece To sing both a song and an opera area from the classical era To understand how both accompanying patterns and melodies can be created from notes in the underlying chords To compose one or two 8 bar sections of music using chords and melody which can be used as another section of a minuet in either ternary or rondo form Jazz: To listen to different styles of jazz & and its influences blues, ragtime, new Orleans jazz, swing era big bands, bebop, Latin jazz and rock fusion To sing spiritual & blues song in the jazz style To develop improvising skills using a variety of scales and note patterns on given tunes and chord sequences PE Cricket at Tilsley Park. Athletics/Rounders Sailing at Farmoor during selected terms.
