2 QUALIFICATION PROFILE FOR THE MASTER PROGRAMME ORGAN - IMPROVISATION GENERAL INFORMATION In today s professional environment, which sets enormously high standards and demands maximum flexibility in equal measure, the main focus of the Master Programme Organ - Improvisation is to convey the musical interpretive skills and technical abilities that are needed for a successful musical career. Extension and deepening of the artistic and scientific education in the Master programme Organ - Improvisation requires today an individually customizable specialization especially in the development of a personal improvisational style. ENTRANCE EXAM The admission examination serves to demonstrate a candidate s artistic aptitude for the master programme Organ - Improvisaiton, as well as to ascertain their previous instrumental and musical knowledge and skills relating to the Organ. In the admission examination, the Examination Committee assesses a candidate s technical skills, musical talent and capacity for expression and creative arrangement, based on which a career as a professional concert organist can be realistically expected. Permission to the master programme Organ - Improvisation is the completion of a professionally qualifying bachelor programme for Organ or an equivalent study 1 at a recognized Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution and the successful completion of the entrance examination for the master programme Organ - Improvisation ahead. ORGAN LITERATURE LIST FOR THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION Prerequisite for the entrance examination is the submission of a list of literature according to the criteria given below. From this the examination board selects works for the complete or partial lecture. A work from this list presents the candidate of his choice: A work composed before 1700 Two works by J. S. Bach: - a free composition (type "prelude and fugue") - a trioset (chorale editing or trio sonata set) A work composed between 1800 and 1930 of about 15 minutes duration A work composed after 1930 In addition, the following tasks with a total duration of about 20 minutes in improvisation are to be solved: A free-style variation series on a given theme with its implementation in any case in soprano, middle voice (as a trio) and bass. An improvisation on a given basso ostinato Differentiated harmonizations of three given melodies or tone sequences in different modalities A free improvisation 1 Equivalent programmes are f.ex. BA Music Education Organ, bachelor programme Church Music (Catholic or Protestant), bachelor programme Harpsichord with specification Organ 2

3 To register, a copy of the the Bachelor degree and a transcript must be uploaded. If the copies are issued in German or English, they must be translated certified. PROOF OF PROFICIENCY IN GERMAN Candidates, whose first language is not German must provide evidence of proficiency in German in conjunction with the entrance examination, as far as this is necessary for the successful progress of their studies. This evidence should preferably take the form of a school-leaving certificate based on classes taught in German. Should the candidate be unable to provide evidence of proficiency in German, the Rector s office must require them to take and pass a supplementary examination in German at Level B1, before admission to their second semester. Following certificates are accepted: B1-Certificate from an ÖSD examination centre ( ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ZB1) ; or a Goethe Institute examination centre ( Goethe-Zertifikat B1 ; TEACHERS OF THE MAIN ARTISTIC SUBJECT (alphabetical order) Mag. 4 DURATION AND ORGANISATION OF STUDY PROGRAMME The master programme Organ Improvisation consists of 120 ECTS credits. This corresponds to a study duration of 4 semesters. 5 MASTER THESIS In the master programme, an artistic Master Thesis must be submitted. Students are entitled to submit a Scientific Thesis instead of the Master Thesis. While the main emphasis is laid on the artistic part, the artistic master thesis also includes a written thesis. This written thesis must elucidate the artistic part. The artistic master thesis serves as proof that the student is able to work artistically and scientifically with regard to the study objective of the study. The ability to comment on one's own interpretations in scientific or essayistic form plays a central role. The artistic Master Thesis may have different forms: 1) Public performance (at least 20 minutes) of a piece of music or a group of works or a practice of organ improvisation that can be (already) described as historical or as a hybrid form of both aforementioned groups 2) A documentation of a performance on a recording medium with a duration at least 20 minutes of a work performance or of a practice of organ improvisation that can be (already) described as historical or of a hybrid form of both aforementioned groups MASTER EXAMINATION The Master Examination serves to provide evidence of having attained artistic maturity. The precondition for being able to take the Master Examination is the successful completion of all the compulsory subjects and of the elective subjects as well as the attainment of a positive mark for the Master Thesis. The Master Examination comprises two parts: Part 1: Performance in front of the examination committee (internal repertoire examination and improvisations) Part 2: Performance in form of a Concert (with organ literature and organ improvisations) ACADEMIC DEGREE After successful completion of all compulsory and elective subjects, the positive rating of the Master Thesis, and passing the master examination taken in front of a committee, the programme of study is completed with the awarding of the degree of Master of Arts (MA). TUITION FEES For Austrian students and students who have the same status as Austrian students (citizens of EU and EEA Member States, as well as Switzerland), if their studies exceed the duration of a study phase plus 2 tolerance semesters: 363,36 per semester. For all other students including those who are stateless and those whose citizenship is undetermined: 726,72 per semester Information on possible grounds for a waiver or refund of tuition fees is available from the Department of Studies and Academic Services. In addition, the following fee is to be paid by all students once per semester: Mandatory membership of the Austrian National Union of Students ( ÖH-Beitrag ), currently amounting to 19,70 per semester. The Austrian National Union of Students fee is the same for both Austrians and non-austrians. 5
