4 Bachelor s degree Voice performance (42 cr) A student who has completed the module is expected to: - have attained such a standard of vocal control in terms of technique and interpretation that he/she is competent to undertake professional solo vocal duties - be able to reproduce phonetically authentic pronunciation and articulation in vocal works in various languages - be able to perform technically demanding repertoire for his/her voice type - be able to use his/her voice evenly across all registers and to master register changes effortlessly - be able to employ a variety of dynamic levels and nuances - have musical phrasing - have a reliable breathing technique - be able to use the extremities of the voice consistently with his/her voice type - know his/her voice type - be capable of independent and smooth collaboration with other musicians - be able to give comprehensive expression (face, body, voice) to the lyrics, mood and music of a vocal work. Master s degree Voice performance (25 cr) Principal learning outcomes: A student who has completed the module is expected to: - have attained such a standard of vocal control in terms of technique and interpretation that he/she is competent to undertake professional solo vocal duties - know his/her voice type - have control of the extremities and passaggio of his/her voice - be able to perform technically demanding repertoire for his/her voice type - have equal vocal production across the various registers - have control of his/her breathing technique, supported by the entire body - be able to employ a variety of dynamic levels and nuances - be able to employ musical phrasing and have flawless intonation - be able to reproduce phonetically authentic pronunciation and articulation in vocal works in various languages - be capable of independent and smooth collaboration with other musicians - be able to give comprehensive expression (face, body, voice) to the lyrics, mood and music of a vocal work Compulsory studies:

10 Language studies (11 cr) Principal learning outcomes: A student who has completed the module is expected to: - have further improved his/her language skills - be capable of independent study and be able to translate from texts in vocal music - be familiar with the basic phonetics of the languages most commonly found in vocal music Compulsory studies: X-K24 Italian language 2 5 cr X-K26 German language 2 5 cr S-LA26 Phonetics of foreign languages 1 cr Career skills (2 cr) A student who has completed the module is expected to: - have a professional orientation and have adopted the principles of lifelong learning - have an understanding of the shifting structures of working life, be capable of finding employment independently and to seek out job duties commensurate with his/her training Compulsory studies: S-LA31 Introduction to working life (1 3 cr) 2 cr Elective studies (minimum 30 cr) Secondary subject module / customised secondary subject module, at least 15 cr (Students may begin their secondary subject studies at the Bachelor s level. Secondary subject studies will be credited at the Master s level, but any credits included in the Bachelor s degree will not count towards the Master s degree.) 11 UNIT DESCRIPTIONS: BACHELOR OF MUSIC Module: Voice performance S-LAT1 Voice performance, vocal art (Bachelor s degree) ( cr, total 42 cr) - be able to use his/her voice to a professional standard in the various styles of Western classical music - be able to further improve his/her voice production - be familiar with the styles of classical vocal music and the principal languages used - have the capability for independent improvement of his/her soloist skills and for undertaking Master s-degree studies in voice. - Active class attendance - Rehearsing repertoire - Level C performance examination as follows: a) sample from category 1 b) 1 works from category 2 c) 2 works from category 3 d) 1 work from category 4 or 6 e) 1 work from category 5 f) 2 works from category 7; in the case of a foreign student, one of these may be from the student s home country. The programme must be performed in the original languages. The programme must be performed from memory, with certain exceptions (chamber music works, demanding modern works, oratorio arias). - Level B performance examination as part of the Bachelor s proficiency demonstration: Performance examination (8 solo songs): a) sample from category 1 (Marchesi) b) 1 works from category 2 c) 2 works from category 3 d) 1 work from category 4 or 6 e) 2 works from category 5, of which at least one must be an opera aria f) 2 Finnish songs from category 7, of which at least one must be in Finnish Total duration no more than 30 min. The programme must be performed in the original languages. A student who has completed a proficiency demonstration is expected to have a command of his/her instrument and be capable of artistic expression to a professional standard and also of reflecting on his/her own artistic work in writing. Completion of the proficiency demonstration: Level B bachelor s recital Essay On a scale of 0 to 5 All other studies included in the student s individual study plan.

13 Level B bachelor s recital: Performance with a maximum duration of 30 min. The examination board assesses the performance and gives oral feedback. Essay: An essay 1 to 2 pages long, describing the student s thoughts, observations and experiences in his/her main subject studies. The main instrument teacher assesses the content of the essay as and gives brief written feedback. Language checking is performed by a teacher in the language in question. The language teacher advises the student on correcting the language as necessary. Bachelor s 3rd year The student s voice teacher Maturity essay The purpose of the maturity essay is for the student to demonstrate both his/her knowledge in the subject of the proficiency demonstration and the language skills referred to in section 6 of the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004). A student who has demonstrated Finnish or Swedish language skills in a proficiency demonstration for a Bachelor s degree is not required to repeat the language test for a proficiency demonstration for a Master s degree completed in the same language. A maturity essay is a paper about 500 words long on a topic related to the student s main subject (proficiency demonstration). The student is to write the maturity essay in a written communication unit under his/her main subject, integrated into another unit, or at a seminar. The student must agree on the subject of the maturity essay with his/her main instrument teacher, the chairman of the examination board assessing his/her Bachelor s or Master s recital, or other teacher designated by the head of the department. The content of the maturity essay is also to be approved by this teacher.

14 Language checking of the maturity essay in a Bachelor s degree is performed by a teacher in the language in question. The language teacher advises the student on correcting the language of the maturity essay as necessary. The maturity essay is accepted by a teacher appointed by the head of the department. : content of the maturity essay, ; for a Bachelor s degree also a language check, Module: Expressive skills S-LA1 Expressive skills 1: Physical and personal basics (5 cr) (autumn + spring = 2 periods) - have a command of the basic elements of expressive skills: contact, reaction, physicality, speech/song connection, awareness of impulses. - be able to reflect on his/her expressive skills and their origins and objectives, and also on any issues that need to be addressed (e.g. control compulsion, lack of self-confidence, passivity, inhibitions, anxiety, etc.) - have improved physical expressive skills and know how to combine them with speech and singing - be aware of the importance of interaction, group dynamics and feedback and be able to give and receive feedback. There are no prerequisites for this unit. Oral feedback Group tuition, maximum 44 h Independent work Bachelor s 2nd year; Master s 1st to 2nd year The unit rehearses basic acting skills in dialogues, scenes and recitatives. The principal themes are narrative and musical pacing, status work and how contact and impulses are realised in narrative. The unit also addresses speech expression and rhetoric. J. Martina Roos S-LA2b Expressive skills 2b: Dance (2.5 cr) - have trained the basic forms of ballet - have trained the basic movement elements of various stylistic periods - have improved mobility, coordination and body control - be able to identify elements of movement - be aware of his/her mobility in relation to his/her own body - have a knowledge of the basic movement elements of the Rococo and Baroque periods - know how to use a number of items in period-appropriate ways, e.g. hats, capes, canes and skirts.
