1 Theatre Arts I-IV Course Overview & Syllabus Course Information: Instructor: Cherise Rino Classroom: Drama/Media Room Course Philosophy: The American Musical Theatre is generally attributed as being one of the original and distinct American contributions to the arts. As such, this course explores the emergence of musical theatre from a historical perspective as well as from a performance perspective attempting to answer the questions: Why musical theater? What distinguishes musical theatre from the other performing arts? What are the connections between musical theatre and music, dance, and theatre as separate components? Musical Theatre is an important component for any performer s tool bag as to be a successful musical theatre performer, one has to demonstrate strong acting, singing, and dancing skills. The successful acquisition of such skills marks the student performer as artistically well-rounded and prepared to embark on a professional musical theatre career. This class is both foundational in terms of skill building as well as preparation for the college or job market following the student s graduation from high school. This course works with the musical theatre performer to develop skills which reflects the American Musical Theatre form itself. Therefore, the dual focus of historical context and performance ability creates students that can both acknowledge the hows and whys of musical theatre as well as perform the form with artistic fluidity and skill. Course Description: This performing arts course explores the American Musical Theater as well as developing basic skills necessary for performing in Musical Theater. Students will explore Musical Theater and its historical evolution as a performing art form, and will showcase their development in a variety of Musical Theater presentational styles. Students will develop their acting, movement, and vocal performance techniques through active participation and reflection.
