1 MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the MODESTO DIXIELAND JAZZ SOCIETY To preserve & promote our unique American National music treasure for future generations, To give jazz musicians opportunities to share their talent with appreciative audiences, December 16, 2007 Vol. 26 No. 9 Dixieland Jazz at Modesto Moose Lodge 821 5th St. Modesto December s guest band is the Mission Gold Jazz Band from Fremont, Ca. Mission Gold Jazz Band was formed in the early 1980's and has a long tradition in performing famous jazz artist s works. Several of the members have been together since the band's inception. All enjoy the opportunity to play for the Newark Community weekly at Swiss Park. Their musical backgrounds range from traditional jazz, to swing, to Chicago and Dixieland style. To encourage youth to learn & to continue the original American art form of playing jazz Board Members President Mary Menz 1st Vice-President Jeannie Wemken (Publicity) 2nd Vice-President Margaret Squires (Music Director) 3rd Vice-President Rozetta McNulty (Membership) Secretary Jan Leer The band line-up consists of John Soulis: Trombone, Baritone, Vocals, Leader John has been listening to Dixieland Jazz since his pre teenage years when he heard his trumpet-playing brother s records of the Fire House Five Plus Two etc. He has played with various bands including Emperor Norton s, forming Mission Gold in the early 1980s. He has also played with The Cell Block 7, And That s Jazz, The Spirit of 29, and Ted Shafer's Jelly Roll Jazz Band. Continued on Next Page Treasurer Mac McCarter Large Deck Hogin David Livingston Drew Mercer Elinor Purdy Have you been to the club s web page? The Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society has a new web page. On the site you will be able to see a calendar of upcoming bands, learn how to join the Club, see who the current Club officers are and much, much more. So come visit us on the web at Jammers! We have a tailgate room now. Get your axe and come on down. Call your friends from Sacramento, Stockton and Fresno. With the addition of a tailgate room we have the possibility of up to seven jam sets, (five in the tailgate room and two on the main stage) depending on number of people who will sign up to play. Jam sets in the main room between the guest band sets takes precedence over tailgate room sets if we lack enough people to make a band. For more information call Margaret Squires at (209) or her at music@modestodixieland.com It is a year of changes in the Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society. Along with having a new venue, the board asks that we break tradition this year and NOT bring cookies and other sweets for the December meeting. Instead help support our new hosts at the Moose Lodge by purchasing items at the snack bar. Any questions about this may be directed to Jeannie Wemkin at
2 Mission Gold continued... Andy Parker: Drums Andy is a walking encyclopedia of 1920 s era jazz, and brings great creativity and authenticity to Mission Gold. For ten years Andy was on the road with Papa Do Run Run. Andy has played with many combos and has been playing the drums with Mission Gold since Bob Sterling: Tuba Bob is the band director at Kennedy High School in Fremont. He was introduced to dixieland jazz by then fellow teacher John Soulis who needed a tuba player for Mission Gold. He has been with the band since the early 1990 s. John Stringer: Clarinet John began playing traditional jazz in Liverpool, England, having started out as a classical musician. Eventually John moved to Palo Alto, and played with the Apex Jazz Band; then a number of others bands including Professor Plum's Jazz. John's main experience was as the leader of the 52nd Street Revival Jazz Band. Along with the clarinet, John will occasionally play the bass clarinet. Roz Temple: Piano Roz helped us out immensely in late 2004 and early 2005, alternating with Rod on piano and bringing her own infectious stride style and ragtime solos to our repertoire. Now we're delighted to have her full time! Jack Wiecks: Banjo Jack started a long-time interest in traditional jazz in high school. After growing up in Western Oregon (where jazz bands are as rare as giraffes) he finally saw a real live Dixieland band at the University of Oregon. He traded in his ukulele for a banjo, but after a few years of college jam sessions, the necessities of making a living and raising a family set in. Recent years have allowed more time for Dixieland and Jack has played with Professor Plum, Churchill Street, Mission Gold, Silicon Gulch, 52nd Street Revival and the Magnolia Jazz Band. Jack has been a member of Mission Gold since Dick Williams: Cornet Dick is a well-known and respected Bay Area cornetist. Dick was a co-founder of "Jazzin Babies", and played with the "Desert City Six" when living in Southern California. Dick moved to Montana and led the "Good Tyme JB", and since coming back to California he was a member of "Alcatraz Angels," "Tuleburg," and "Creole Jazz Kings" before joining Mission Gold. He is associated with JazzSea Cruises/Jammers and often organizes jam sets at major jazz festivals. Rest In Peace Bill And Paul We lost two area musicians this past November. Bill Richards lived in Sacramento and passed away November 5 th. Bill was a founding member and past president of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. He was leader of the Sutterville Stompers and was a piano player for Buck Creek Jazz Band. There will be a memorial service for Bill on February 7, 2008 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, 21 st & J in Sacramento. Buck Creek Jazz Band and Howard & Terrie Alden with play for the service. After the service the Sutterville Stompers will perform, and there will be a jam session for all musicians. Much closer to home, and to our hearts here in Modesto, Paul Boore passed away November 29 th. Paul was the tenor sax player and vocalist with Tuleburg Jazz Band. One of the tunes he was best known for was his rendition of All of Me, but with a slight revision to Half of Me. Paul s daughter, Paula, said there would be a memorial service on December 8 th at the Elks Lodge in Stockton with a Second Line parade, jamming musicians, and parasols. If you would like to send cards: Paula Albert, 1578 Johnson Lane, Minden, NV Paul s Daughter Ruth Boore, 3562 Quail Lakes Drive, Stockton, CA Paul s Wife Thank you, Bill and Paul for sharing your music with us. May you rest in peace.

4 A Lagniappe From Lady Reed For what has become almost a November tradition for MDJS we had our usual full house for the performance by KnightSounds. I think that helped to ease the transition to a new facility. So what do you think of the Moose Lodge? I heard no complaints, neither did other board members. The drink prices are very reasonable. The Bloody Marys were quite tasty. I heard the sloppy joes were good. And isn t it nice to have a cocktail waitress again? I checked with her after the meeting. She said you all treated her quite nicely. How long has it been since we have had a tailgate room? The area we had at the DoubleTree really didn t qualify as a tailgate room. You just can t get going when people are constantly telling you to play quieter. Kind of like when we were kids and my Mom used to yell at my brother and I to turn the stereo down! I am hopeful that as word gets out that we now have a tailgate room, musicians who have not been attending our monthly meetings will return to jam with us. A huge Thank You goes out to the members of KnightSounds for sharing their talents with us. Yes, the band is on the calendar for next year. Even huger (is that a word?) thanks goes to drummer and band leader Glenn Mount. He is the driving force behind KnightSounds and has the thankless job of making sure there are enough musicians to fill the chairs. Glenn also has to set up, tear down, and haul around all the equipment. Looking ahead in the 2008 calendar year, we have a great lineup of bands. BUT! Look for something really special for our Founders Day in April. Details will be made available as the date nears and as I figure them out! Also coming up April 9-14, 2008, Karen and Ernie Bucio are hosting a trip to New Orleans for French Quarter Festival. The travel agent is Debbie Frederickson of The Noteworthy Traveler in Hughson, Hopefully Debbie will be able to attend our December meeting to distribute flyers and answer questions. Mike Mooney also has a few flyers to hand out. See you at The Moose in December for Mission Gold. Be sure to thank band leader John Soulis for all he does as band leader!
