2 Who we are... Pioneer Center Youth Programs (PCYP) is the educational outreach division of the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, northern Nevada s premier performing arts facility. Our programs are available to all public libraries and elementary schools throughout northwestern Nevada. About our programs PCYP performances are designed to educate, entertain, and enlighten elementary-age children through interactive performing arts presentations. School programs are set up in two back-to-back assemblies: a 30-minute assembly for primary grades and a 40-minute assembly for intermediate grades. Public library performances run 60 minutes in length. At the end of the performances, we ask that teachers, librarians, parents, and children complete an evaluation form. This form is used as a tool for future programming and for grant funding consideration. Affordable prices The cost for schools and libraries in the immediate Reno-Sparks area is $200. 3 Aria 51 Aria 51 combines classical and folk instruments with singing to create a unique approach to a variety of musical styles. Julie Holloman, Danielle Hunt, and Evan Stern present Classical, Jazz, Rock, Folk, Pop, Flamenco, and Hawaiian music. Students will experience the sounds of cello, classical guitar, tenor ukulele, baritone ukulele, and voice while learning to identify musical styles. The music is performed using interactive age appropriate activities to inspire excitement and encourage creativity. Students will learn song lyrics, rhythm patterns, and movement to identify instrument sounds, musical styles, and music basics. Julie Holloman plays the classical guitar, tenor ukulele, and sings for the trio. She has her music education degree and taught music K-6 in the Washoe County School District for 13 years before starting the Aria School of Music & Art in Evan Stern plays cello, baritone ukulele and sings for the trio. He studied Musical Performance at U.N.R., plays with the Carson Symphony and teaches at Aria. Danielle Hunt plays tenor ukulele and sings for the trio. She teaches at Aria, and is a James Hill certified ukulele teacher. September 2018 through June 2019 Pioneer Center Youth Programs Artist Roster Beaupromo Puppetry Local Artist Beaupromo Puppetry has revived the ancient and revered tradition of marionette puppetry, presenting this unique art form in a musical variety show format. Under the expert manipulation of local puppeteer Bernie Beauchamp, 24-inch tall marionette puppets narrate stories from America s history through song, dance, and music. Selections from the Great American Songbook are presented as historical and cultural lessons from the first half of the 20th century. The evolution of jazz, blues, and popular music are explained as an artistic expression of the evolution of our uniquely American heritage. With the help of his colorful marionettes, Bernie Beauchamp promotes messages of self esteem, unconditional love, and tolerance. Audiences of all ages are delighted by Beaupromo Puppetry. Bernie Beauchamp has performed as a professional puppeteer in the Reno area since He has been featured on the Artist in Residence roster for Sierra Arts Foundation and has presented his educational, entertaining programming at special events, festivals, and street performances, as well as in public libraries and elementary schools. 4 Artist Roster Brüka s Theatre for Children Brüka Theatre proudly presents an original theatre for children production of Stars In His Eyes Galileo. An enchanting play written with children in mind about the famous scientist, Galileo, his incredible discoveries and challenges as experienced through his young daughter Virginia. Brüka brings different styles of theatre and participation into the performances so that audiences are exposed to a deeper understanding of the story and theatrical presentations. Brüka Theatre has been presenting live theatre in our community for 26 years. This touring production features professional actors bringing the story to life with a small set of props and costumes. This live theatre performance incorporates physical theatrics, improvisation, and audience interaction. Children are invited to participate in the creation of each performance, ensuring that every show is unique. Funny and insightful, this theatre troupe features top-notch performers and writers who consistently involve young people in learning and participating in theatre and related arts. March through June 2019 Erika Paul Trio You don't want to miss the opportunity to have this jazzy trio visit your school or library! Music styles from more than a century of authentic American jazz are performed by this trio as they invite young audiences to engage in interactive participation. New Orleans and Ragtime beginnings through modern instrumental and vocal jazz styles written by some of history's most innovative jazz artists like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Vince Guaraldi. Educator, pianist and singer Erika Paul leads this group together with David Aller on electro-acoustic upright bass and Dave Riegert on drums and percussion. Career musician, singer/songwriter, and certified private music instructor Erika Paul weaves interactive age -appropriate activities and simple songwriting skills to inspire spontaneity, creativity, and "all that jazz." Original songs from Erika's Grammy-nominated, award-winning children's interactive jazz CD, "Scat's My Bag," are also included in the program, that share personal stories of young storybook characters who follow the call of jazz and music education as a lifetime passion. 5 Artist Roster House of Waters Touring Artists House of Waters, an exciting and eclectic Brooklyn-based band, brings the collaborative knowledge of three master musicians into the educational space. This unique program offers students a rare opportunity to learn, experience, and absorb different musical traditions from around the world. With an all-inclusive hands-on approach, students will experience a fun, participatory and inspirational concert/workshop that can help unlock their own creativity. This exciting program also teaches values such as communication, listening, focus, open-mindedness, and patience. House of Waters consists of hammered dulcimer virtuoso Max ZT, master percussionist Ignacio Rivas- Bixio, and brilliant bassist Moto Fukushima: three innovative musicians who are redefining their instruments. This group offers audiences of all ages a well-rounded and energetic exploration of the world s music and its fusion with American music and culture. Petroglyph Music Across the Ages Just as petroglyphs are found around the globe, with many cultures creating different kinds of rock art, so all peoples share a universal urge to make music. Musicians, educators, and story-tellers Pete Fairley and David Blonski lead students in this exploration of music from multiple cultures and historical eras, combining David s multi-instrumental melodic skills with Pete s study of world percussion and rhythm. As students experience the sounds of instruments ranging from the Australian didgeridoo and the tabla drums of India to the electric guitar and drum kit, Pete and David weave a narrative linking the ancient with the modern, and highlighting the commonalities shared by diverse peoples worldwide. Opportunities for student participation occur throughout the program, and teachers will find they can integrate the experience into lessons in social studies, math, and science as well as music. 6 Artist Roster Soul Fisticated Touring Artists From Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (Andrew Sisters) and Rock Around the Clock (Bill Haley & His Comets) to Oye Como Va (Santana/Tito Puente), and lots more, Soul Fisticated provides an upbeat show with educational value for youth. The Trio performs hit songs from the 1940s to the present, exploring the range of rhythms, lyrical approaches, and traditions in popular music in a fun way. Band leader Roz also shares stories about her life as a singer/songwriter and as a touring musician. Roz McCommon is a singer, songwriter, and pianist recently relocated to Seattle, with roots in the Kansas City area. Trained in classical piano, violin, and opera, the musical influences of Kansas City drove Roz toward a blend of soul, blues and pop. Roz has worked with soul, R&B, gospel, country, and hip hop music artists; toured as a performer in Europe and the US; worked in theatre and opera; and released three of her own CDs. Roz is joined by Nathan McCommon on bass guitar and Michael Coble on acoustic guitar. Monday, March 11 through Saturday, March, Limited availability book early! Tsurunokai Tsurunokai brings the ancient art of Japanese Taiko drumming to the children of northern Nevada. Traditionally Taiko drums have been used in warfare, martial arts, religious ceremonies, and festivals throughout Japan for over 1400 years. It is said that the beating of the Taiko drum echoes the beating of the heart and the rolling of thunder. The powerful sounds of Taiko drums will transport your students on a cultural adventure through Japanese history and customs. Tsurunokai performs traditional Japanese folk music as well as original compositions. Students will be invited to participate in drumming and dancing during the performance. Tsurunokai was founded in 1997 by Rieko Shimbo, a Japanese native who studied traditional music and dance in Tokyo before moving to the United States. Rieko has assembled a group of talented and dedicated Taiko drummers whose credits include performances at many local and regional festivals and art exhibitions. She has been teaching and performing in our community for almost 20 years, and is passionate about introducing people to the rich culture of Japan through the art of Taiko. 8 Program Order Form your order to When scheduling your programs, please remember: For locations in the immediate Reno-Sparks vicinity, the cost of the programs is $200. For locations outside the Reno-Sparks area, the cost is $250. An invoice will be generated after your booking request is confirmed. Regular booking dates are SEPTEMBER 2018 through JUNE Some artists are available only certain dates. Check the Artist Availability sheet before requesting an artist. Take into consideration holidays, vacations, school testing dates, and any other applicable scheduling conflicts. Please make sure you mark the CONFIRMED booking date and time on your master calendar. Each school booking consists of two back-to-back programs: 30 minutes for primary grades and 40 minutes for intermediate grades. Please schedule approximately 15 minutes between these back-to-back programs. An example for a morning booking would be: 9:30am for primary and 10:15am for intermediate. An example for an afternoon booking would be: 1:30pm for primary and 2:15pm for intermediate. Each public library booking consists of one 60 minute program. Library bookings are available in the morning, afternoon, or evening, seven days a week. Artists usually have their own equipment and only need to schedule set-up/break-down time. Artists will be in direct contact with you to arrange these times, as well as explain any special requirements they may have. Our programs are supported by several grants. In order that we continue to receive grant monies, we are required to evaluate our programs. Evaluation forms will be provided. We appreciate you mailing these forms back to the Pioneer Center soon after the program is completed.
