1 Department Curriculum Map Department KS3 Subject Specific Skills Students will build on their previous knowledge and skills through performing, composing and listening. They should develop their vocal and/or instrumental fluency, accuracy and expressiveness, and understand musical structures, styles, genres and traditions, identifying the expressive use of musical dimensions. They should listen with increasing discrimination and awareness to inform their practice as musicians. They should use technologies appropriately and appreciate and understand a wide range of musical contexts and styles. Wider key skills Students will learn about other traditions, through exploring different styles and genres of world music. and technology The evolution of music from early music to modern day Working and as part of an ensemble Students will be taught to: play and perform confidently in a range of solo and ensemble contexts using their voice, playing instruments musically, fluently and with accuracy and expression improvise and compose; and extend and develop musical ideas by drawing on a range of musical structures, styles, genres and traditions use staff and other relevant notations appropriately and accurately in a range of musical styles, genres and traditions identify and use the interrelated dimensions of music expressively and with increasing sophistication, including use of tonalities, different types of scales and other musical devices listen with increasing discrimination to a wide range of music from great composers and musicians develop a deepening understanding of the music that they perform and to which they listen, and its history
2 KS4 Examining Board: EDUQAS (WJEC) Unit 1-Performing 30% Students will be required to perform two pieces of music under exam conditions of grade 3 (minimum) standard of over 4 minutes on length. Students will need to perform a solo and an ensemble performance displaying evidence of fluency, accuracy and excellent ensemble skills. Unit 2-Composing 30% Students will complete two coms of at least 3 minutes in length in controlled assessment conditions. Com 1 will be a free com of their choice and com 2 will be a set brief provided by the examination board (EDUQAS) in the September of year 11, linking to the 4 areas of study. Students will also have to submit a com log, providing a detailed explanation of their ideas and development and will need to reference any influences from other composers. Unit 3- and 40% This unit will be externally assessed and completed under exam conditions, in the summer of year 11. Students will learn the following 4 areas of study and 2 set works in greater depth: Film for Ensemble Popular (Rainbow set work) al Forms and Devices (Mozart set work)
