Known universally as The Leeds, it attracts the finest young pianists from across the globe. Being in the audience at The Leeds is an unforgettable experience. The remarkable talent of our young pianists is breathtaking - you can t fail to be drawn in by their staggering virtuosity, and the roller coaster excitement of the contest. This year, for the first time, you can join us - wherever you are in the world - through live streaming with medici.tv. and listen to the Finals broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. SECOND ROUND Thursday 6, Friday 7 and Saturday 8, 2.00pm and Great Hall, LS2 9JT The twenty-four competitors selected from the international First Rounds compete for one of ten places in the Semi-Finals, playing solo repertoire of their own choice. SEMI-FINALS Sunday 9, Monday 10 and Tuesday 11, 2.00pm and Great Hall, LS2 9JT The ten semi-finalists perform a further solo piano programme, and also put their chamber music credentials to the test in performances with the Elias Quartet, violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and cellist Bjørg Lewis. FINALS Friday 14 and Saturday 15, Leeds Town Hall LS1 3DA The Competition reaches its exciting climax as our five finalists perform across two days, each playing a concerto with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner.

Welcome to The Leeds Bringing the repertoire to life! Across two days, pianist and broadcaster David Owen Norris takes an informal look at the competition repertoire, tells some of its stories, and illustrates the most fascinating moments at the piano. Thursday 6 & Friday pm 12 including coffee or tea Psychology of performance and competition International performance coach, speaker, author and pianist, Charlotte Tomlinson shares the secrets of her pioneering work in this illuminating and thoughtprovoking talk. Her approach enables musicians to perform at their peak on stage by moving them through whatever blocks are in the way. Sunday 9, 2.00pm-3.00pm, A pianist s life Pianists and Jury members Paul Lewis and Imogen Cooper talk to presenter and broadcaster Petroc Trelawny about the trials and tribulations of a solo pianist s career, and the importance of collaboration. Sunday pm-5.00pm, The piano and me Petroc Trelawny hosts a conversation with celebrity pianists Ed Balls and Alistair McGowan, exploring what playing the piano means to them and how it helps them in their busy other lives. Wednesday 12, -8.30pm, On playing Mozart with Alfred Brendel Who was Mozart the composer? How did he strike his contemporaries? How literally does one need to take his notation? How do his few works in minor keys compare to the many in major, and his concertos to his sonatas? A Mozart player gives himself advice. Thursday 13, 5.00pm-6.30pm, 20
5 8 Leeds International Piano Competition Piano + 9 MASTERCLASSES, LS2 9JT Jury members work with competitors on Competition repertoire. Sa Chen was prizewinner at The Leeds in 1996, at the Chopin Competition in 2000, and at the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, making her the only pianist to be awarded prizes in all three major piano competitions. Monday pm, Shai Wosner is a pianist whose virtuosity, musical integrity and intellectual curiosity have established him as a favourite with audiences and critics worldwide. Tuesday pm, Henning Kraggerud, violinist and Jury member, presents a masterclass with a twist, inviting participants and audience to question all pre-judgments about what makes a musician tick. Expect something different! Wednesday pm-4.00pm, Imogen Cooper CBE is regarded as one of the finest interpreters of classical and romantic repertoire. She is particularly admired as a musical colourist, and for her expressive use of dynamics and characterisation. Thursday pm, Paul Lewis CBE, Chair of the 2018 Jury and Co-Artistic Director of the Leeds International Piano Competition, is known as one of the leading musicians of his generation. Friday pm. Lars Vogt, Leeds Prizewinner in 1990, has an eclectic repertoire ranging from the classics to the dazzling Lutoslawski concerto.
