1 July org New Jersey s Premier Acoustic Music and Dance Organization Minstrel Birthday Show Here is your offical (doesn t that sound important?) invitation to take part in the Minstrel s 38th Birthday Show. This unique celebration has been held at the Minstrel every year since 1982, when the Coffeehouse turned 7. On a Friday close to the actual anniversary (July 25, 1975) we present a show featuring of the Folk Project s member-musicians. Here s how it works: The show will take place on Friday, July 26 at the Minstrel. It will consist of a series of performances by groups comprised of Folk Project members combined in randomlychosen duos and trios. The individual members of the groups may be of any skill level, different musical genres, different instrumentation. Musical groups are set up at the Folk Project s July 4th picnic, which takes place on Thursday, July 4th (No kidding) at the home (and pool) of Ed Roffman, 11 Butternut Road in Randolph. More details on the picnic are on page 10. Everyone who wants to take part in the show puts their name on an index card (remember index cards?). The cards are shuffled, and then dealt out into about 20 piles to form the groups. The groups then have the next 3 weeks to work up one number per group, to be performed at the Minstrel on Friday, July 26. 2 July 2013 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 7/5: Falcon Ridge Most Wanted Tour Every year the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival does an audience poll to determine their Most Wanted for a return appearance. And the winners tour the country the following spring in the Falcon Ridge Most Wanted Tour. In 2012 the winners were Gathering Time, The YaYas, and Honor Finnegan. These three premier songwriting acts will go round-robin through the evening, and probably support each other with harmonies and instrumental accompaniment for some songs. Fri., 7/12: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. For information on how to secure a performance slot, call (973) , or go to folkproject.org/minstrel/openstage.shtml. Fri., 7/19: Toby Walker with Tom Picard The Blues Revue summed it up neatly. Toby Walker is...a brilliant remarkable guitarist. A pinch of Piedmont, a dash of Delta, a solid Chicago undercurrent minus the amplification, but not the electricity. At home with both wooden and steel guitars, Toby plays the classics as well as his own songs with an open style and a dash of humor. And as an extra bonus for us, he s recently moved to Morris County, and become a Folk Project member. Opener Tom Picard is a Folk Project member songwriter with a good way with words. He accompanies himself in a nifty blues-oriented guitar style.. Fri., 7/26: The Minstrel s 38th Birthday Show Our annual Birthday Show celebrates not only the Minstrel s first show back in 1975, but the membership of the Folk Project, which presents this concert series. The Project s membership has always included many musicians and singers. And tonight we present around 40 of those member-musicians, brought together in randomly-chosen groups to celebrate our anniversary. It s an evening of community music, which has always been the core of this organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Check your newsletter mailing label or inquire at Membership@ FolkProject.org if you re not sure. It s not required, but TRY TO BE AT THE PICNIC on the 4th, and be able to commit some rehearsal time in the intervening weeks. (See below if you want to be in the show, but can t make the picnic.) AS FAR AS MUSICAL ABILITY, That s a matter of your own judgment. If you re reasonably comfortable in playing a song in front of friends, well that s what you ll be doing. I ve seen otherwise amateurs rise to the occasion countless times. YOU CAN BE IN AS MANY GROUPS AS YOU FEEL YOU CAN COMMIT TO. Simply enter as many index cards as the number of groups you wish to be in. One or two groups is common. THE DRAWING WILL BE DONE AT 3:30 PM AT THE PICNIC, and you can use the rest of the afternoon to get a head start on choosing your music and rehearsing. (Start thinking of good ensemble songs now, so you can have some suggestions for your groups when they re chosen.) YOU MAY ADD ADDITIONAL MEMBERS TO YOUR RANDOM GROUP at your choice, provided that these ringers are also current Project members, and that the originally randomly chosen people are featured as well. If you get my answering machine, leave your name, phone, address, e mail, and HOW MANY GROUPS YOU WANT TO BE IN. I ll make out your index card(s) and put em in the hat for you. If you don t think other members will be familiar with you, also leave information on instruments you play or other musical skills. (sing harmony, etc.) The other members of your group will contact you to let you know who they are, and set up rehearsals. However, please try to make the picnic. You put other members of your groups at a disadvantage if you re not there to be involved in the choice of music and first rehearsal time, and that usually means an extra rehearsal needed in the intervening weeks before the actual show. Besides which, the picnic is great fun. Performances in care centers demonstrate that music reawakens memories and is retained by even those who have lost speech and much more to dementia such as with Alzheimer s. The music-and-brain connection was brought into focus in Oliver Sacks 2007 book Musicophilia. The non-profit organization Music and Memory was founded to bring personalized music to care So that s it. I hope you can be part of this. TREASURER S REPORT: May 2013 PayPal receipts for Festival admissions have not yet been posted. We will have those figures at the next Board meeting. Treasurer Bill asked that people making deposits on behalf of the Folk Project PLEASE write their name and the purpose of the deposit on the face of the deposit ticket. He can view the deposit tickets via Wells Fargo s Online Banking but sometimes has trouble figuring out where a deposit came from or what its for. Former Treasurer Rachel noted that she had the same trouble with mystery deposits when she was Treasurer as well. OLD BUSINESS: ACMA GRANT: Liz put a blurb in the Newsletter soliciting help with research for the ACMA Grant. Elizabeth noted that the Morris Arts Council has an intern willing to make themselves available to help with information gathering for the grant application, but the FP still has no one willing to supervise the intern. Mike A. suggested putting out another request in the Newsletter in 3 or 4 months from now. COMMITTEE REPORTS: SPECIAL CONCERTS: The Uke NJ festival is on for 8/30-8/31/13 at MUF. Mike said this is shaping up to be a major event and that we should talk it up. Estimated breakeven point is 100 attendees at $75 each. MERCHANDISING: Gloria absent (hurt her ankle). Treasurer Bill said according to his records, $285 in merchandise was sold at Spring Festival. Mike A. noted that FP logo sweatbands were purchased and available for sale at Festival. SOUND REINFORCEMENT: Re: the new portable sound system we re considering purchasing: Mike A. expressed the opinion that with multiple amateur sound people setting up and running the equipment, simpler is better. Elizabeth asked about the relative merits of buying a portable system vs making the Minstrel system more portable getting cases and so forth for the Minstrel system to make it easier to transport. Mike D said a portable system would be useful for smaller venues so we don t have to transport the Minstrel s system. Mike A pointed out that we would need to consider where a portable system would be kept between uses in someone s garage? Then we d need to coordinate with that person to get the equipment, and bring it back afterwards. Lois asked about the proposed MUF sound renovations, currently on hold does that include redesigning or providing storage space for FP sound system? Good point, said Mike D. This should be brought up in future discussions with MUF. Elizabeth asked about future workshops to train new sound people. Mike D. said he has 4 or 5 people interested in participating in such training. It s a matter of getting access to MUF for free to hold the workshops, Mike said. Re: providing speakers so the Front Desk people can hear the concert: Bill pointed out that if the Lobby area is quiet, we could just leave the doors to the Sanctuary open. Elizabeth noted that her church uses a wireless speaker system to broadcast sound to volunteers working in the church kitchen. She will find out what they use and get back to Mike D. INTERNAL AFFAIRS: Mike DelVecchio and Christine DeLeon are hosting a special EoM at a commercial establishment. Dave Kleiner and Liz Pagan are hosting the September EoM. Pat Brangs wrote a blurb for the Newsletter and is helping publicize the Evenings of Music. Pat will ask Pam R. to put an appeal for people to host Evenings of Music on the FP s Facebook page. Bob McNally asked if we d ever thought of holding an EoM in a public place? Lois noted that people who live in condo communities, etc, often have access to a community room that maybe we could use? Elizabeth pointed out that parking might be a problem with that. Bob will look into getting access to the Community Center at Mount Tabor ( the Bethel ). Mike D. said that Mario s Pizza, in Randolph, has a BIG back room, lots of parking and places outside to jam. He will contact them to find out if an EoM would be feasible to do there. As usual, the FP 4th of July Picnic will be at Eddie and Robin Roffman s. MEMBERSHIP: Eddie said that Festival is our single biggest source of new and returning members; Minstrel, less so. He is working on a job description for the Membership Chair. He will send out renewal reminders 4 times per year; then after 1 year, he will stop bothering people to renew. FESTIVAL: Mark reported the Spring Festival went very well. One of the major changes made at this Festival was in the number of concerts and workshops expected of the performers. At previous Festivals, performers were expected to do 2 45-minute concert sets and 2 daytime workshops; at this Festival, they did 1 1-hour concert set and 3 daytime workshops. Mark and Robin felt that this new schedule added more value to the daytime workshop schedule, and they also added more people doing workshops during the day even if the workshop presenters don t do concert performances. Mike A. praised the Festival Sound committee: Best Festival sound EVER! MEETING ADJOURNED 10:15 pm. Nancy and Russ are proud to have introduced a Chinese immigrant friend to the Minstrel. Nancy says, I think we have a new folkie in the making! Heather McNally, daughter of Bob and Evelyn, has returned from her teahouse hike in India and Nepal, including a climb up to 19,000 feet in the foothills of Annapurna. She is home, happy, fit, healthy and sound! Lois DeRitter recently celebrated a significant reunion of her East Paterson High School class. Lois said, It was magical and wonderful! I want to go back to High School. Mark Schaffer got a new VW Jetta Diesel; he s excited to be reducing his carbon footprint. Mark and Robin s dog, Mercury, apparently isn t quite ready for the change: he spent several hours hiding out in Mark s old car during the June FP Board Meeting! The Schaffers were very glad to find him! Mark is also excited that he and his ARGOtext watch-keyboard invention have been accepted into the NJIT Enterpreneurial Development Center. While Jean Scully was house-and-dog-sitting for Mercury during the Schaffers 10th Anniversary trip to Hawaii, Mercury ate a bag of caramels. He got sick, then he got better. Siobhan Scully is enjoying her summer job, at the Giggling Goat Dairy Farm. Jean is having a very good year so far at her job in real estate sales. Mike Del Vecchio lost his car when a truck full of port-a-johns ran into him. Someone might have said, I guess the sh-t hit the van! Mike is thankful no one was hurt, and he s thankful that cars can be replaced. Sandy Reilly just passed her exam practicums and is proud to be a new Certified Level 2 Bicycle Coach. She said, It was awesome. The skill sessions were the most fun, especially competing in a bicycle bucket ball game. Mike Agranoff is revisiting his roots in NYC. After writing a letter to the current residents of his boyhood apartment, he ran into someone at a recent folk festival who currently lives in the same building! Grover Kemble got a call from an old flame with a request that he perform at her mother s 90th birthday party in August. Her mother had been a big band singer in the 40 s and 50 s. Grover and her mom always liked each other. Grover is looking forward to this party. Rachel Streich is settling in after her move to a new apartment in Bloomfield. Rachel says, It ll be fine when I eventually finish unpacking. I m getting to know my new neighbors. Jean Scully helped her find the new apartment. Your Humble Newsleditor is recovering from her May 29 nephrectomy. After 10 days, she s in no pain or discomfort but a little low on energy. Post-op creatinine is already in the normal range (sometimes takes months). Her peripatetic right kidney was apparently pissing up a storm in Michigan day after implantation if all continues to go well, Liz will find out more about the recipient and how many people were ultimately in the transplant chain. Still encouraging y all to do what you can by donating to the St. Barnabas transplant center or the National Kidney Foundation, or any charity of your choice. Or, if you are in abundant good health, share it and become a donor yourself! 13
