2 The Minstrel December into January 2014 Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 12/6: Chorus Song Night This is an annual event for the Minstrel where we present an evening of songs for you, the audience, to sing. They will be songs with choruses, songs familiar to you, or songs easily learned. Songs will be led by Hillary Foxsong: Great voice and wonderful singer from Gathering Time and the Folk Goddesses. Rachel Streich: Singer of traditional and old-timey songs accompanied on banjo & guitar. Scooter: Host of our monthly Open Stages. Mike Agranoff: The Minstrel s Program Chair. Fri., 12/13: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. For information on how to secure a performance slot, call , or visit Fri., 12/20: CLOSED Fri., 12/27: The Shockenaw Mountain Boys, Diane Perry The Shockenaw Mountain Boys are an acoustic subset of the great New Jersey jam band, Railroad Earth. They feature R.E. staples Tim Carbone on fiddle, Andy Goessling on guitar and banjo, John Skehan on mandolin, and Johnny Grubb (of Emmitt & Nershi) on bass. They do great high-energy versions of Irish tunes, traditional folk standards, and a few originals. Opener Diane Perry is a natural. One of those performers who, from their very first note, you just know was born to her instrument. Diane s instruments are the violin and her voice. And her genre is the American Popular Songbook she fell in love with as a teen. Classically trained at Juilliard, her violin playing combines the tone of the concert-hall virtuoso with the weighty swing feel of the big bands. And her vocal interpretations are unique and perfect for the material. Fri., 1/3: Split Bill John Flynn and Reggie Harris John Flynn was just too good a songwriter for Nashville. In the early 90 s he left his comfortable staff songwriter position at a major Music Row publishing house to pursue the music that simply didn t fit in the commercial Country Music World, and never looked back. The result was a stream of brilliant songs, brilliantly delivered, touching all aspects of contemporary life, personal and social. Reggie Harris is best known as half of the veteran duo with his wife Kim. He combines a strong folk and gospel legacy with a solid background in classical, rock, jazz, and pop music. His shining voice rides high over his strong guitar work to deliver a powerful and emotional performance. UPCOMING: 1/10: Tom Chapin, Zoe Mulford; 1/17: Open Stage; 1/24: Jean Rohe & The End Of The World Show, The Four Baris; 1/31: Split Bill Hugh O Doherty and The Loose Canons; 2/7: Cindy Mangsen & Steve Gillette, Jean Scully; 2/14: Valentines Day Extravaganza; 2/28: L il Rev, Bob McNally; 3/7: Andy Cohen; 3/21: Legends of the Celtic Harp; 3/28: Orrin Star, Robin Greenstein; 4/4: Jack Williams,The Levins; 4/11: The Bucky Pizzarelli/Ed Laub Duo; 4/18: Open Stage The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children 12 and under are free. 4 <ital>raison d Etre</ital> Zoe Mulford, the opening act for Tom Chapin on January 10 (and who will also be doing a headline set on May 16) wrote the following observation in the NERFA listserve. I think it is something worth spreading to the Folk Project Community. Years ago, the traveling folk singer had value beyond providing entertainment. He or she served to gather people in one isolated place to hear the news from other isolated places. As information is digitized, the news from everywhere reaches our cell phones, laptops and TVs instantly without leaving the house. As communication is virtualized, we are more easily in touch with everyone we ever knew, yet find ourselves increasing isolated from the people living on our block. So let us propose that the greater purpose of folk music in the modern world is to remind people to get together and acknowledge all that we have in common. In taking care of business, the folk presenter creates the open, friendly gathering place that entices people to get out of the house, turn off their phones and experience a performance with other people. In capturing and communicating something universal about the human experience, the performer provides the audience with common ground and the ice breakers for conversation. In getting together and talking about a shared experience, the people create community in an increasingly alienated world. 7 Folk Project Board Meeting November 12, 2013 Board Meeting: The Summary The meeting was called to order at 8 p.m. at the home of Pam Robinson & Bob Safranek, and the new nominees for Board positions who were in attendance introduced themselves. Present: Jean Scully, Mark Schaffer, Pat Brangs, Lois DeRitter, Lori Falco, Joanne Cronin, Mike Agranoff, Bill Henderson, Barrett Wilson, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Nancy Kelner, Lindsey Wagner, Allan Kugel, Pam Robinson, Mike DelVecchio, Grover Kemble, Eddie Roffman, Leigh Walker, Sandy Reilly. Absent: Bob McNally, Scooter Ferguson, Joe Graziano, Gloria Friedman, Rachel Streich. Visitors: Shari Korenstein, George Otto, Paul Fisher, Tom Picard, Steve Humphreys Acceptance of the October minutes was put off until the December meeting. Treasurer s Report: FP has made $1327 for the calendar year, but over the fiscal year shows a loss of $101. Bill noted 1.5% of the unallocated funds in our endowment are available each year for Festival under the terms of the endowment. Mike noted that the endowment has grown from $75,000 to $104,000 in the last 10 years, under Andy Koenig s sound management. Bill discovered that our insurance policy that covers all our venues was cancelled in November of 2012 for non-payment of premiums and could not be reinstated. Various action items were taken to get new insurance put in place ASAP. OLD BUSINESS: Nominating Committee (Mike A): (SEE PAGE 11 fo slate.) MUF Fundraiser: The event, which was pulled together by Mark Schaffer and Steve Humphreys (a member of both MUF and FP) was a rousing success and a great opportunity for the two communities to come together for a common purpose. NEW BUSINESS: Annual Meeting: Meeting will be held 12/3 at the Chimney Rock Inn. Meeting is at 8 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. All members of FP are welcome to attend and cast their vote. Come see how the sausage is made! Attendees will pay $15 for dinner, with the balance being paid by FP. Zed Music: Tom Picard and Shari Korenstein have been running a concert series/open mic/song circle music event on the first Saturday of each month for the last several years in several different venues, and are now asking to come under the umbrella of the Folk Project. Motion was made and carried unanimously after discussion. COMMITTEE REPORTS: SOUND REINFORCEMENT: Volunteers experience at Minstrel would be greatly enhanced by having the sound piped in to the lobby from the concert and Mike D. is working on this with Elizabeth. E-COMMUNICATIONS: Lori will work with Tom & Shari to integrate Zed Music s mailing list into ours. There are now about 3,000 names in Constant Contact, and our open rate is about 30%, which is great. SWINGIN TERN: October was a low month attendance-wise, but it s up and down all year; overall they are having a good year, with lots of happy dancers. Leigh gave a special shout-out to Suzanne for all her hard work in booking great bands; she has really improved the dance. Please see Folkproject.org for info on upcoming special dances. PUBLICITY: Allan is working to resolve some issues on the website; if anyone notices a problem with the site (pictures not loading, calendar broken, etc) please notify Allan so he can address it. The committee will discuss how to resolve potential turf battles for space on the home page, and will bring it to the board if necessary in the next few months. INTERNAL AFFAIRS: November s party will be at the home of Mark & Robin Schaffer, December will be at the home of Steve Humphreys; January is booked for Margaret Crowl s home. MINSTREL STAFFING: We have gotten about half a dozen volunteers in the last few months. At one recent show, the MC asked for help to clear up the kitchen at the end of intermission, and it worked very well, with the refreshments room being broken down in about 5 minutes. We will try this again. MINSTREL BOOKING: MUF has agreed to delay part of the planned rate increase, and our rent will now be $280 a week until the middle of next year. Once MUF decides what they are doing with the sanctuary upgrades, we will repair or replace the sound panels. Mike got some great leads at NERFA. Overall Minstrel is up $1421 for the year, although $119 in the red for October. HSNOI: Shot some great shows this month, and have more scheduled through January. Sandie found so many great acts at NERFA that they are now booked through the entire year. SPECIAL CONCERTS: Joni Mitchell Blue Concert was a fantastic success, financially and emotionally for both the artists and FP. Several FP members performed on October 30 at FDU s annual WAMFest and had fun and were well-received. Hopefully this will lead to more work with FDU at future fests, as this is a good college connection for us. FESTIVAL: Festival made an $800 profit. It was a great weekend, the music was exceptional and the only downside was Robin having to miss the festival due to her broken arm. The workshops were well-attended and we had several second- and third-time attendees. Although a new venue was under consideration (Crossroads), after a visit from some other FP members and lots of discussion, it was decided the cons outweighed the pros so we will be staying at Camp Bernie for the next year at least. Mark thanked those who came for the inspection for their invaluable input. Mark and Robin are looking for suggestions for a new name for Festival. In discussions with performers and newer attendees, it appears that the name festival conjures up large crowds, outdoor concerts, and a generally different experience than we offer. In an age when people are scanning down a web page at at one-line descriptions of venues or concerts, festival doesn t convey what we re about, which is more like a retreat. In addition, some performers have not booked with us for this reason, or quoted us inflated fees. Although many of us are very attached to the name, the issue is how outsiders see it. Please any suggestions you have to Mark. Meeting was adjourned at 10:30. Next month s meeting will be at the Chimney Rock Tavern, dinner at 6 pm, meeting at 8 with voting for next year s board. 12 Good o the Order/ Community News This is a place to share news about memorable events and challenges you have faced in the past month with your Folk Project Community. This encounter then led to an opportunity for Grover to channel his alter ego Jimmy Durante. For a full account, check in with Grover... Eddie Roffman: His mother, Florence Dressman Roffman (of Blessed Memory), passed away on Sun., 11/17. My mind understands, but my heart has me crying rivers of tears. Steve Humphries: Another new Board member joining us for the year 2014! Steve reported that two of his family members have recently been challenged with health issues, and are experiencing very difficult times.
