Taking its title rom a character in Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy series, Radiohead rontman Thom Yorke rote this bleak yet darkly humorous song ater eeling alienated in a croded room in Hollyood; no onder that aranoid Android coneys claustrophobic panic. 2 NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR This arrangement is challenging; time signature changes, precise rhythms, string crossing and aggressie playing are ust a e o the things that ill keep both the conductor and musicians on edge. Hoeer, the piece is not ust playable, but un to play once a little oodshedding has been done. Right at the beginning, the celli and iolas must rhythmically lock in together ith the pizzicato. Take care not to drag! At m. 1, the rhythmic eel changes and the iolas hae an undulating yet dynamically lat igure that propels the ensemble. Here the bass must be strong. At m. 1, the second moement o the piece begins. The 1st iolins pizzicato stabs should be arring hile not stepping on the celli moti. The / time signature should hae a and 3 eel, and again, take care to keep the tempo steady. At m. 61, the 1st iolins play a ild melody hile the loer strings hammer aay don belo. The 1st iolins remain in a ild mode in mm At m. 5, the quiet moement o the piece enters. arber s Adagio or Strings is a good model or this section; the beautiul melody belies the impending doom on the horizon. Mm is the most intense passage, though the 1st iolins melody should, at the last minute, become strangely calm, as indicated by the non-ibrato marking in m. 10. The ild 2nd moement section returns at m. 10, though this time the 1st iolins should be pretty ild hile remaining rhythmically solid; let the 1st iolins hae un ith a slo yet exaggerated portamento upards into obliion during the tremolo double stop in mm beore alling back to earth or the donbeat o m reie Only
