2 MUSIC CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT THE ROYAL DANISH ACADEMY OF MUSIC Music Confucius Institute (MCI) is a collaboration between the Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM) and Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing (CCOM). By combining traditional Chinese music and Western classical music, MCI creates new and meaningful dialogue between China and Denmark. MCI holds a wide range of concerts aimed at diverse audiences, presenting traditional Chinese music and giving composers opportunities to explore new combinations of Western and Chinese instruments. Music and culture are deeply intertwined. To complement the concerts and musical activities, MCI also organizes cultural activities to give musicians and audiences a better understanding of both traditional and contemporary Chinese music. 2

3 WELCOME TO CHINA DAY 2018 It is with great pleasure that Music Confucius Institute welcomes you to China Day Over the past six years, China Day has gradually become one of the yearly highlights of MCI s activities. This year is no exception, and we are very pleased for the opportunity to once again welcome you to this annual event that celebrates the meeting of Chinese and Western music and culture. This year, we are very glad for the opportunity to host the Confucius Institute Global Artists Chamber Orchestra of Central Conservatory of Music, who will perform two concerts featuring new and traditional Chinese music, followed by musicians from MCI and RDAM. In addition, you will experience the premiere of a spectacular audiovisual art installation, The Eye of the Dragon, created by Hans Peter Stubbe Teglbjærg, Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Aside from the concerts, you will also be able to learn more about traditional Chinese instruments, try taiji (a Chinese martial art form) with musical accompaniment, and be introduced to Chinese folk songs and art songs. Through these and other activities, we hope to be able to showcase different aspects of not only Chinese music, but also Chinese culture, both traditional and modern. Welcome! 5 ABOUT CHINA DAY China Day is a yearly event organised by Music Confucius Institute. The China Day concerts are always the highlight of the event, and feature musicians performing on Chinese and Western instruments from both the Royal Danish Academy of Music and Central Conservatory of Music. These concerts give audiences an opportunity to experience not only traditional Chinese music, but also new compositions featuring Chinese instruments and composers. Aside from the concerts, China Day also includes other activities, such as workshops about Chinese instruments, folk singing, and taiji with musical accompaniment. These activities serve to give guests at China Day an understanding of not only Chinese music, but also Chinese culture. 5
