4 Franz eter chubert Born: January 31, 1797 Died: November 19, 1828 period composer *Classical/Romantic Franz chubert was born the son of Franz Theodor chubert and lisabeth in Himmelpfortgrund, ustria. His father was a schoolmaster and his mother a homemaker. chubert received a wonderful musical education and won a scholarship to boarding school. He demonstrated a gift for music as a young child, including piano, violin and organ and was also an excellent singer. His family cultivated his love of music as his father and older brother, gnaz, both instructed him early in his musical life. chubert eventually enrolled in tadtkonvikt, a school which trained young vocalists so they could one day sing at the chapel of the mperial Court. He earned a scholarship that earned him a spot in the court's chapel choir in He studied under Wenzel Ruzicka, the imperial court organist, and later, the widely known composer ntonio alieri, who believed chubert to be a musical genius. chubert played the violin in the students' orchestra and was quickly promoted to leader and even conducted in Ruzicka's absence. However, in 1812 his voice broke, which forced him to leave the college, but he did continue his studies with alieri for three more years. n 1814, his family pressured him to enroll in a teacher's training college in Vienna, which he did, and then took a job as an assistant at his father's school, where he worked for the next 4 years. During this time, he also continued to compose music and proved to be a prolific songwriter from By 1814, at the young age of 17, he had already written a number of piano pieces, produced string quartets, a symphony and a three-act opera. chubert is largely credited with the German Lied. He was boosted by the rise in late 18th-century lyric poetry and the invention of the piano, chubert tapped the poetry of giants like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, showing the world how poetry can be brought to life through music. n 1818, chubert had grown tired of teaching and had found an audience for his music, so he left teaching and pursued music full-time a decision sparked in part by the performance of his piece, talian Overture in C Major, on March 1, 1818 in Vienna. That decision led to more creativity and time to compose more frequently. n the summer of 1818, he completed a string of material including piano duets Variations on a French ong in minor and the onata in B Flat Major, as well as several songs and dances. That same year, he returned to Vienna and composed the operetta Die Zwillingsbrüder (The Twin Brothers), which was performed in June 1820 and had some succcess. n 1825 he wrote his most famous song, llens ditter Gesang (llen's third song), most commonly known as ve Maria. t is believed that chubert contracted syphilis at the young age of 25, which led to many struggles both financially and in friendships for the remainder of his life. Due to constantly remaining penniless, he turned back to teaching. He continued to work on composing music throughout the trials and strife he faced until his dying days. n fact, one of his greatest works, Fantasy in F minor, was composed during his last year of life. His rise in popularity led to his first and consequently final, public appearance on March 26, 1828, which allowed him to buy his first piano. His health continued to deteriorate, which led him to move in with his brother, Ferdinand, where he later died on November 19, 1828 in Vienna, ustria.
