Brazlan born and Brooklyn based Claudo Rodlt, s a very heartfelt muscan. Claudo plays a German- made '\ :,umpe~, wth valv~s that resembe the vafv~s on a french nom. HS tone \S Clear and sparklng. ClaudO loves melodes... ls phrases seem to flow effortlessly and always torm beautful lnes that pant pctures. When playng tunes, Claudo's lnes are quck movng. wth each note defned Claudo Rodt s a master of the samba form. as rle turns standards nto sambas wth taste and Claudo gave unforgettable performances ~. evenngs. Greg Abate knows no boundares when he pcks up hs saxophone. He plays wth an energy and a stamna that drve the band... and he never lets up. Greg s a very accomplshed rnuscan... as he demonstrated both evenngs. He plays the flute wth as much ntens.y as he does the saxophone. Greg, lke ClaudO, also demes hs notes clearly n hs quck movng lnes, Greg s able to voce hs muscal deas spontaneously... havng total knowledge of hs nstruments. Greg Abate plays hs musc w~h notabe feelng, and also gave us two unforgettable evenngs of. musc. The rlythm secton was outstandng, and about as. good as t gets. Phl DeGreg, Bob Bowman, and Todd Strat kept pace wth Claudo and Greg, as f they played together regularly. Ths rhythm secton cooked. Phl DeGreg deserves more recognton. He left us breathless, as he combned hs classcal lcks wth hs jazz lcks. Phl DeGreg s a POW81ul pano player. Hs phrases were well fonned and ntellgent throughout both evenngs. The ensemble opened wth a Bll Holman's arrangement of " Remember You". Mchael Parknson, who s the Drector of Jazz Studes at the Unversty of l/jssourl at Kansas Cty, then joned featured guest artst The frst pece was a Latn flavored Steve Swallow compomposton enttled "Como En Vetnam". Mchael Parknson certanly dsplayed a beautful, crystal clear tone on hs Then the ensemble waltzed away to the "Blue Bollnets"-an orgnal composton by Dave Zoller, and played the tune through n t's entrety Ths tme Mchael Parknson dsplayed hs sklls on the flugelhorn. "Blue Bonnets" was an extremey nterestng waltz, wth a hauntng meloc1y.. endng abruptly n dssonance. thoroughly enjoyed tle The ensemble concluded wth Olver Blues"... ncludng a screamn' alto The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra wtll Ed Love drectng, The Ol'chestra Charles Mngus composton enttled Fockefeler At AttcaH.arranged Davd Sharp. NJO closed wth the Hoagy Carmchael On My Mnd". The band took the song from a ballad to a style, and then back to a ballad Jon Tom and Tom Harvll a\played ne solos. And then Vctor struck, and drove trle Nebraska Jazz Orchestra to new heghts. The composton, "Vctor Strkes" s an orgnst... wrtten by Davd Str)/ker. Davd Stryker s a very nnovatve jazz gutar playf3(, who s also orgnally from Omaha, and now lves and wmks on the east coast Davd s ganng consderable attenton as a compos'ar, as well as a gutar player. wwte the song for Vctor. Vctor's robng drum solos and energy are hard to match, Dave Sharp played a fne alto burstng wth energy. assure you that the felt the energy. The N,JO then broke down nto a small group, wth \ctor Lews contnung to drve the ljand. Vctor chose to perform two of hs orgnal tunes. The l'rst \vas caled.. "Loss Of A Moment"(Don't wa:. too long, or you'll mss an opportunty). Ask Vctor to explan that one, when you see hm next tme. Tom Harvll played a beautful solo. Ed Love's solo was ~owng and melodc. Vcar's cyrnba\ and brush work was exctng and flawless. He s defntely a master player. The group then jumped nto an extemely quck paced tune entted "Hey t's Me You're talkng To 1',/1e". The tune moved from a samba nto a swng stye, and then back to a samba. Bob Krueger took a trumpet solo, playng quck, successve, and we defned notes. Tom Harv took a very mpressve solo. Tom (efntely has hs own style... was mpressed, The NcJO stepped back out on stage... and szzled through a Mark Thompson composton. Vctor Lews deserved and receved a standng ovaton... not onty for hs playng, but for nsprng the NJO to reach and stretch. fv1y hat was off to thern al...
