MISSION The mission of the Lakeshore Middle Band Program is to provide its students with an enjoyable experience in music, ultimately guiding each student toward having a life that is enriched by listening to and creating music. This experience will be achieved through high standards of musical excellence, personal responsibility, and a strong work ethic. In pursuit of this goal, students will develop self-esteem, confidence, character, and meaningful relationships with others. COMMUNICATION Mrs. Kathryn L. Redling Director of Bands Kathryn_redling@iss.k12.nc.us For updates, handouts, important dates, announcements and musical links, please visit my teacher webpage listed under my name on the school s website. CLASSROOM RULES Students will exhibit good rehearsal etiquette. (Always show respect for the podium and for whoever is instructing on it by being quiet and attentive) Students are to only touch or play their own instruments. Only percussionists are to touch the percussion equipment. Students will need to come prepared to class with all supplies; instrument, pencil, and music. Students will help to maintain a clean and organized classroom and instrument storage room. No gum or food is allowed in the classroom at any time! Only bottled water is allowed
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES Before Rehearsal: In a timely manner, take out your instrument and sit in your assigned seat with materials and a pencil. All cases should be left in the storage room. Take care of all instrument maintenance prior to class starting. (This includes: oiling valves, changing reeds, oil your slide etc.) During Rehearsal: No talking while the director is on the podium. Raise your hand for questions and wait to be called upon. Be respectful of classmate s instruments. After Rehearsal: Do not pack up until told to do so. The bell does not dismiss you. Storage Room is not a social room. Unpack/pack your instrument then return to your seat. Percussionists: clean up your area after every rehearsal. PRACTICE Practice is required to master the skills of performing on an instrument. It is recommended that students practice no less than 15 minutes a day a minimum of 100 minutes a week. Students are expected to do the following during a practice session: 1. Properly warm-up; including breathing exercises, buzzing on mouthpiece, long tones, lip slurs, scales & tonguing exercises, etc. 2. Work on lesson assignment from method books or music handouts. 3. Work on band music or other music that will be performed in public. There will be a practice chart along with be a bi-weekly playing tests that students will need to pass off. If the student fails the test they will need to make it up again the next class or set up a time to pass it off before or after school.
EQUIPMENT Students are required to provide their own instrument. Students should clean, oil and/or grease their instruments regularly. They must also provide their own supplies for their instrument, such as valve oil, slide grease, cork grease, reeds, neck straps, etc. to use on the instrument both at home and at school. SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENT LARGE INSTRUMENTS If your student is borrowing a school owned instrument for band there is be a $50 nonrefundable fee to cover the general wear and tear of these items. It is expected that the borrower will return the item in good repair. This includes cleanliness, no new dents or excessive scratching, rips, bends, etc. The item is to be returned no later than the last day of school or report card will be held. Should items fail to be returned or returned with any damages not noted above and beyond the scope of normal wear and tear; an invoice will be mailed from the Lakeshore School book-keeper for replacement or satisfactory repair of the instrument. INSTRUMENT REPAIR Please DO NOT attempt to fix the instrument on your own. Instrument rental repairs need to be serviced with your music dealer. All others should visit your local music dealer or can be done through our music representative at your own expense. INSTRUMENT STORAGE The Instrument Storage Room is used to house student instruments during the school day. Students are to keep this room neat and clean at all times. All instrument cases should be latched and placed in an orderly fashion. All instruments are to be kept on the shelves and off the floor at all times, with the exception of tubas. Any student caught tampering with and/or moving another student s instrument will lose their right to use the instrument storage room. Tampering with another student s instrument could possibly result in a discipline referral. To avoid confusion with similar looking instruments, please properly identify your instrument with the student name, address and telephone number. ATTENDANCE AT PERFORMANCE Attendance at performances is a requirement for participation in band. It is very difficult to give an exceptional performance without the participation of every member. If for some reason absence from a performance is unavoidable, the director should be notified as soon as possible to avoid conflicts with missing parts, seating, and the ability to perform the music at an acceptable level.
Please keep in mind that there will be a concert time and a call time. The call time is when all students should be in their seats at the concert venue, ready to warm-up and tune prior to the start of the performance. All performance times and locations will be announced well in advance so that students and their families can plan accordingly. CONCERT ATTIRE Beginning Band: Guys: Khaki pants, and a white dress shirt and tie; Cargo shorts and cargo pockets on pants are NOT permitted. Girls: Khaki pants or floor length khaki skirt and a white polo dress shoes. No flip-flops 7 th Grade Concert Band: Guys: White, long-sleeved, button-up dress shirt and tie; black dress pants, black socks, black dress shoes. Ladies: Black Dress Pants or floor length black skirt, white dress shirt or blouse No sleeveless shirts. Black dress shoes no flip-flops. 8 th Grade Symphonic Band: Guys: Black dress pants, Black collared shirt with tie, black socks and shoes. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY Extra Credit is available for students who attend any instrumental performance (not vocal) at any level higher than middle school. Attend a local high school band concert, go to any UNC campus and attend a band, orchestra, or jazz band concert (not a football game). Afterwards student will need to turn in a concert program and a concert review form that can be picked up from Mrs. Redling for full credit. GRADING POLICY Grading policies for the Lakeshore Middle Band program have been developed over a period of years and in cooperation with directors from the some of the finest programs in our state. These policies have been designed to ensure that the grade report clearly and accurately reflects the performance quality of each individual and further ensures that the band experience is fair and equitable to all who participate. Below is an explanation of the grading formula used for each grading period.
- 30% Participation (being prepared for class, having all materials, paying attention, follow class rules) - 30% Evening Performance (arriving on time, appropriate dress, following concert etiquette) - 20% Test (playing and written) - 10% Worksheets - 10% Practice Logs (100 minutes each week) When there is not an evening performance during a Nine-week grading period, the following grading scale will be used. - 60% Participation (being prepared for class, having all materials, paying attention, follow class rules) - 20% Test (playing and written) - 10% Worksheets - 10% Practice Logs (100 minutes each week) FORGETTING YOUR INSTRUMENT: How do you learn to play without an instrument? It is crucial to have your instrument in class every day that you have band or orchestra. However, I understand that it does happen on occasion for various reasons. Please make sure your musician always has their instrument on his or hers band or orchestra day.
