1 Czech Radio announces the 50 th annual International Radio Competition for Young Musicians Concertino Praga, 2016 International Radio Competition for young musicians held under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union ( Member of the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth ( Article 1 The competition is open in the following categories: PIANO VIOLIN CELLO CLASSICAL GUITAR Article 2 The competition is organised by: Český rozhlas (Czech Radio) Concertino Praga, Vinohradská 12, Praha 2, Czech Republic concertino@rozhlas.cz, internet: concertinopraga.cz Production and secretariat: Ilona Topolová, DiS. Telephone: (+420) , mobile: (+420) , ilona.topolova@rozhlas.cz (hereinafter referred to as the Organiser ) Article 3 The competition may be entered by musicians who do not exceed the age of 17 in the year when their competition recording is made and submitted. The competitors must not exceed the age limit of eighteen years in the year of the laureates concert, i.e. in June Article 4 The competitors performance recorded on music media (hereinafter referred to as the Recordings ) is assessed in the competition. The Recordings must be made in a studio or during a public performance between 1 January 2015 and 13 December 2015 as live recordings without any post-editing. The Recordings shall not be subject to any broadcasting rights of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) or mechanical rights (IFPI). 2 by the respective organisation (see Article 6), which guarantees its professional quality. For participants from the Czech Republic this organisation is Czech Radio. Article 5 The selection round for candidates from the Czech Republic intending to participate in the International Radio Competition Concertino Praga is the Czech Republic Nomination Round of Concertino Praga (hereinafter referred to as the Nomination Round ). Participants in the Nomination Round will be invited by Czech Radio to make their competition recordings in October and November 2015 free of charge. The conditions of making the Nomination Round recordings are posted on the competition s website. The competition s secretariat will send them to the candidates upon request. Article 6 Competitors from abroad may enter the competition via the members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the International Music Council (IMC) and the European Music Council (EMC) (hereinafter referred to as Organisations ). The links to the websites containing the Organisations contact information are included in Article 23 hereof. In exceptional cases candidates may also be registered by a public, government or private radio organisation or by a similar organisation. However, in these cases it is necessary to contact the Organiser and inform them at least 14 days before the registration deadline. Article 7 Registrations are done solely by means of the attached form, which can also be downloaded from the competition s website. The form registration shall be sent to the Organiser by post or . The person registering the candidate(s) shall be the sole contact person for the Organiser during the whole competition. The Organisation shall inform its candidates about the existing regulations. Registration deadline: 31 October The Organiser shall confirm the receipt of the registration within ten days. Along with the registration, the competitor s CV in the extent of lines and two printing quality photographs (including the photographer s name) shall be submitted. By sending these the competitors shall consent to these materials being used for the competition s promotion. Article 8 Each Organisation may register no more than five candidates for the international competition, regardless of the instrument category. In those years when the competition is intended for chamber ensembles, the term candidate means one ensemble. In the case of candidates exceptional artistic qualities the limit may be reasonably increased. Article 9 The Organisation shall send the Recordings to the Organiser (by priority or registered mail) on CDs only. Each Recording shall be sent with an accompanying information sheet and with the required documentation. The accompanying information sheet is posted on the competition s website. Upon request, the Organiser can also send it by mail. The deadline for sending the Recordings: 13 December The Organiser shall confirm the acceptance of the Recordings within ten days of their receipt. 3 Josef Suk: Quasi una ballata no. 1 from Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 17 CELLO Lukáš Hurník: Andro Verdan Variations (released by Czech Radio) Bohuslav Martinů: Variations on a Theme of Rossini for cello and piano CLASSICAL GUITAR Lukáš Sommer: Canzona e toccata per chitarra (released by Czech Radio) Milan Zelenka: Unfinished Variations on a Theme of Jana Obrovská b/ Performances of a programme of candidates own choice, i.e. one or more compositions (or parts thereof) of minimum total length of 20 minutes and maximum total length of 30 minutes. Recordings shorter than 20 minutes may be excluded from the competition. The jury may shorten listening sessions for Recordings longer than 30 minutes. It is recommended that competitors choose music of different periods and at least one composition (or a part thereof) from the standard concert repertoire. In the case of early music (i.e. original baroque or classicistic compositions the piano part may be replaced by a harpsichord part). Recordings of contemporary compositions shall be accompanied by notation. The recordings of compositions of the competitors own choice may be for a solo instrument (one piece at most) or for a solo instrument and piano. Because the Recordings may be broadcast on the radio, concertante compositions cannot be accepted. Recordings of such compositions may be excluded from the competition. Article 11 The recordings shall be judged by an international jury in the first quarter of The Recordings for the Czech Republic Nomination Round of Concertino Praga (only for candidates from the Czech Republic) shall be judged by a Czech jury in the period preceding the international jury sessions. The international jury consists of seven members. Two jury members are appointed by the EBU s Music Programme Group. The five remaining members are appointed by the organiser. The Czech Republic usually has five representatives in the jury, while other countries are represented by one person each. The Organiser shall ensure that the jury consists of a variety of members and that musicians, soloists, conductors, teachers and other representatives of the music world are present in it. The chairman of the jury shall be appointed by the Organiser. The Organisations, including Czech Radio, which have registered a candidate may not have a representative in the international jury. The jury members may not have any information about the candidates. Article 12 In each category, the jury may award the first and second prizes. The prize winners shall receive the title of Concertino Praga Laureate. The jury may also award an honourable mention. The jury need not award all the prizes. The Helena Karásková Prize winner, who the jury chooses from the first prizes in all categories, shall become the overall winner of the competition. The jury shall not award any ex aequo prizes (shared prizes). For 2016 Czech Radio announces an award for the best performance of a composition by Bohuslav Martinů. This is an optional part of the competitors programme of their own choice, which, however, gives them a chance to win the award if they include a Martinů piece in their repertoire. The jury also awards the EMCY Prize. This prize is given to a competitor who proves extraordinary musicality and an original, mature and inspiring music performance. Besides that the jury awards the Prize for the Best Performance of a Compulsory Composition. Article 13 The jury s vote shall be secret, anonymous and done by means of ballot papers. The EBU representative (an independent observer who is not a jury member) has the right to see that the proper procedure is adhered to and to verify the validity of the ballot papers. The jury sessions are not open to the public with the exception of appointed Czech Radio employees. 4 EBU and EMCY in February 2013 and it can be found on the competition s website. All jury sessions shall be held in the English language. Article 14 The Organiser shall inform the Organisations about the results within ten days of the end of the international jury sessions. The results shall also be available on the competition s website. Article 15 The laureates of the International Radio Competition Concertino Praga shall defend their titles by playing at a celebratory concert in Prague s Rudolfinum and at the South Bohemian Concertino Praga Festival in June The Organiser may also invite candidates who have been awarded an honourable mention. The concert shall be broadcast live by Czech Radio 3 - Vltava. The Organiser shall do their best for the concert to be also broadcast by Czech Television and by the EBU within the Euroradio season during The South Bohemian festival concerts shall be broadcast by Czech Radio 3 Vltava live or from recordings. The selected winners of the Nomination Round shall perform at the South Bohemian Concertino Praga Festival and possibly at other concerts organised by Czech Radio as well. Article 16 The winner of the Helena Karásková Prize shall be given the opportunity to record their own CD in Czech Radio s studio. The recording shall be released in 500 copies, out of which Czech Radio shall retain 100 copies for the promotion of the competition. The purpose of recording and releasing this non-commercial CD is to support the most successful competitor, who may use it for their own promotional purposes. The recording may not be used for any commercial purposes without Czech Radio s written consent (licence agreement). The CD shall be released by Czech Radio, which shall be the owner of the recording rights. Czech Radio reserves the right to use this recording for its own promotion and for radio broadcasting. Article 17 The Organiser shall provide the EBU with the recordings of those candidates who have won the first and second prizes, as a pink offer. The EBU shall receive this offer within a month of the end of the jury sessions. The Organiser shall also offer the EBU the opportunity to broadcast all the concerts, either live or from recordings. The radio organisations that participate in the competition shall have the moral obligation to broadcast the recordings. Article 18 The Organiser shall release a non-commercial CD with the best competition recordings for the purpose of the winners presentation. This CD, which may be used for promotional purposes, shall be given to all laureates. Article 19 The Organiser shall pay the following costs: a) The costs of each laureate s and their accompanying person s travel within the Czech Republic and their accommodation in Prague and at the South Bohemian Concertino Praga Festival, but only if their transport and accommodation are arranged by the Organiser. Costs of travel and accommodation arranged by the laureate and by their accompanying person shall not be paid by the Organiser. The costs of travelling to and from the Czech Republic shall be paid by the Organiser only to the laureates and their accompanying persons. The costs of the other prize winners travelling to and from the Czech Republic shall be paid by the Organisation that has registered them for the competition. The winners shall not receive any remuneration. Neither shall any remuneration be received by the Organisation that has registered them. The accompanying person shall be appointed by the Organisation that has registered the winner. b) Costs connected with the prize winners public concerts. 5 c) The jury members remuneration, travel expenses and accommodation, with the exception of the EBU representatives, whose expenses shall be paid by their organisation. Article 20 The costs connected with making the recordings submitted to the competition as well as the costs connected with obtaining all the EBU radio and television rights for the public performances in and at the South Bohemian Concertino Praga Festival and the mechanical rights for making the promotional CD shall be borne by the Organisations. Article 21 By sending the recordings to the competition, the Organisations agree to their other use by the Czech Radio and by other EBU members for including but without limitation to radio broadcasting, releasing a CD with the best competition recordings and releasing the overall winner s CD and for the promotion of the competition (e.g. posting the recordings on Czech Radio s website). By submitting their registration, the candidates (or their legal guardians) give Czech Radio their consent to using their competition recording and the recordings of their performances at the June tour and also their consent to making their visual images (including but without limitation to photographs) during the events following the competition that are organised by Czech Radio, and they also consent to the photographs being used for the needs and promotion of the competition (the competition s website, etc.) in an unlimited scope in all cases. By submitting their registration for the Concertino Praga competition, the Organisations and the candidates also express their full agreement with the existing competition regulations. The awarding of the prizes may not be sought by legal action. Czech Radio is the only entity to have the right to change the regulations for the individual annual competitions and to interpret them. Article 22 These existing regulations shall be drawn up in the Czech and English languages. In the event of any disputable interpretation, the Czech version shall be decisive.
