1 February 2012 Volume 36, Number 02 Dave Holo and His holotradband Are Back For Their Annual Appearance Sunday Feb 19th By Rod Belcher It s nice to have old favorites grace the stage of the Ballard Elks for a PSTJS concert. It s also nice that those favorites each have a different sound. Last month it was Uptown Lowdown, with its strong dedication to early classic jazz. In contrast, holotradband, our featured February group, focuses not only on trad as its name implies but also on its own versions of mainstream or swing. Cornetist-leader Dave Holo, too, exhibits a contrasting approach to jazz than that of Uptown Lowdown s Bert Barr, with a nod toward, say, the lyricism of Bobby Hackett. His sidemen tend toward the same small-group style that emanated from New York s 52nd Street clubs 70 years or so ago. Holo s players include guys who have been with him for years at their regular gig each Tuesday night at the New Orleans Cafe in Pioneer Square. The long tenure together truly shows in the topdrawer musical program they offer. The band s lineup consists of Dave Loomis on trombone and vocals; Bruce Hall on reeds; Lance Haslund on guitar; Mike Daugherty on drums; Jeff Norwood on string bass and Peter Kok will be substituting Feb 19th for Alex Guilbert on piano. Holo, of course, leads the way on his cornet, and may offer a vocal or two. The sextet aims to present a highly listenable-danceable voicing of varietal jazz. This writer has never heard them miss their target WHERE: Ballard Elks Lodge, 6411 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle. WHEN: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., Sunday, February 19th. ADMISSION: $10 - PSTJS members; $13 - non-members. Pay only at door. FURTHER INFO: Carol Rippey, Or website - Plenty of free parking, great view. Coffee, snacks, other beverages available. Notes from the Prez Our January Jazz Session was different, to say the least. First let me say that those who shared the music with us had a great time, including the musicians. It was tricky getting through Seattle and into Ballard - where we only had one short snowfall- we also had rain and sunshine and a beautiful sunset. The total count of members was 35, not counting those board members able to get there and the band. Lots of good eats, coffee and the bar was open as well. At this time each year I begin writing and talking about Jazz Camp. The dates for 2012 are July 1st through the 7th. So start thinking now about who would like to go to camp, or who you think would benefit from the awesome experience it is. Ages for camp are from 12 to... no limit. The students need to have been playing their instrument for at least 2 years, this is not a week of beginning classes. PSTJS sponsors students going to camp. The tuition is $550, and that is paid thanks to all of you who buy raffle tickets, and who sometimes donate your winnings back to the Youth Scholarship Fund. We have sent anywhere from one student to seven students. Do the math, that s a lot of raffle tickets. And we and the students sincerely thank you so very much. So, talk with your children, grandchildren, other relatives or friends, it s a not to be missed opportunity for those who are serious about their music. Be sure to read the letter from Ginger Reid elsewhere in this issue. She has volunteered to take on a money-raising project this year and it sounds good. Check it out and join in. We ll have more information from Ginger in the future issues. Since we had such a small turnout last month it was decided to auction off the tickets to the Seaside Festival this month. If you re interested bring your checkbook let s bid it up. Seaside is on of the remaining few local festivals and we need to really support it. The same should be said for the Olympia Festival. Keep the music going, it s happy and upbeat, something all of us can use these days. Hope to see many of you this month for holotradband. Always a full house and always a great band, let s keep our fingers crossed for... if not clear skies at least no snow. Cheers, Judy

Your membership and contributions are tax-deductible. Thank you. by Ginger Reid AUCTION Hi! I m Ginger Reid. You probably know me as the lady who stamps your hand at meetings. The club needs money. One way that we could try to raise money is to have a silent auction. The present plan is to have one at the May 20th meeting. What all members can do to help support this, is to donate quality items for the auction. What we need are nice ornaments, good china (cups & saucers, etc.), nice framed pictures (paintings, prints and photographs), some of those gifts that we all get that we wish the donor had kept (the purple towel set that cousin Gertrude gave you she thinks they are beautiful, so will someone else, or the cosmetic set in a fragrance you wouldn t use on a bet), nice pieces of jewelry (costume or fine), coffee table books (not too many of these) and new clothing or vintage clothing in good condition (i.e. Victorian). Newer vintage clothing needs to be something really special. (What comes to mind is the spectacular Playboy jacket sold at a recent vintage clothing sale here in Victoria.) Also any like new Jazz items, clothing, hats, umbrellas, etc. What is not wanted : toys, except for antique toys, novels, except for boxed sets, paperbacks, ordinary dinnerware and kitchenware. If you have a question about an item s suitability, me at oldreid@yahoo.com. I have dealt in antiques and collectables most of my adult life and would love to do this for the club. Items can be brought to the meeting on the day, or if you can t make that meeting, we will arrange for one of the board members to take your items at an earlier meeting. Each item should be accompanied by a slip of paper with your name and the approximate value of the item (if you know). This is very important so we can sell them for the correct price. by Anita LaFranchi FROM THE EDITOR I have a little space this month, so I thought I would pop in a word or two,. First - I have really enjoyed putting this newsletter together for a little more than a year. BUT I would really, really appreciate some articles from you all. I really need little articles to fill in spaces and large articles to fill in larger spaces. If you are hosting a festival - wouldn t it be fun if you had someone from your organization write me a little piece to go along with your ad. If I have room, I will be happy to print it. Please - no press releases! I have received some articles about adventures in the Jazz world. Those have been fun pieces, I would like to see more of them. Do you know a Jazz artist that has visited you or have you hosted one? That might make an interesting piece too. Photos to go along with your articles will also be greatly appreciated. I reserve the right to edit as much as I feel is necessary on any articles I receive. I would really like to have a little bank of articles, that would be a nice gift to me! If something comes in that is appropriate for the next issue, the deadline is the 15th of the month. I can t guarantee that it will make it to the printed page, but every effort will be made. A much needed ad will always take precedence! A little about me. For six years - I was the Editor of the Victory Review Acoustic Music Magazine. I live in North Seattle with two cats and a Folk/Blues/Jazz musician, who also writes some of his own music. For over 25 years I have taught Ballroom and Swing dance at several community colleges. If any bands need a swing instructor - hey I m your gal!
