2 Purpose This Competition is open to anyone from elementary school age to adult and has been established with the aim of providing an opportunity to cultivate a broad love and appreciation for music and nurture a rich sensitivity of the heart through experiencing the pleasure of playing the piano at performance level. We hope that it will provide a chance to improve the performer's powers of expression, musical sensitivity and performance skills which will help to fulfill the potential of each individual. We aim to support these ambitions and provide opportunities that will lead in the future to a widening of spheres of activity to the international stage and make contributions to the development and enrichment of our musical culture. In commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the Ishikawa Prefecture Piano Society, this competition was first held in 2011 and will be held every two years. Features An important musical foundation in playing the piano in performance can be achieved in this competition through a set piece of baroque music and an etude. You are free to choose a piece of your choice for the final round which as well as being assessed on technique, will also be assessed on the degree to which the artistic performance is effectively conveyed, the lyrical sensibility and fluidity of musical expression, and the level of understanding and perfection in the interpretation of the piece. We would suggest that you choose a piece that is in keeping with your current ability in order that you can effectively produce a good performance that touches the hearts of the audience. We would also like you to make a speech for about one minute on your optional piece with regard to your thoughts and feelings in how you approach it. "Prize winners' concert" to be performed by gold, silver and bronze medalists will be held in spring (Venue not yet decided) Top prize winners will be recommended to perform at various concerts held by Ishikawa Prefectural Music and Cultural Promotion Corporation, Ishikawa Prefectural Artistic and Cultural Association or Ishikawa Prefecture Piano Society.

3 Competition Procedure Preliminary Selection: Selection will be based on the optional piece recorded on CD or DVD. (It must be different from the ones you play in the preliminary and final rounds) Only the pieces assigned for this competition should be recorded on CD/DVD. The piece should be recorded at the very beginning of the CD/DVD. Exemption from Prizewinners of the 3rd Ishikawa International Piano Competition Preliminary Selection: (Gold, Silver, Bronze or Outstanding Performer prize) Preliminary Round: Final Round: Performance of set pieces. Performance of an optional piece (should be different from the ones you play in the preliminary round) * Change in the submitted repertoire after passing the preliminary selection might be permitted after consideration. Applicants exempted from the preliminary selection: Please remit the entry fee and send applications also during the application period. Make sure to write the final round pieces as well in the application form. Please remit the entry fee by bank transfer using the participant's name, and attach a copy of the receipt to the back of application form. If you wish to enter two sections, please send applications separately. Once paid, the entry fee is non-refundable regardless of circumstances. We will not return your CD or DVD recording, and will not use for any purpose except the judging. All applicants will be notified of the results of the preliminary selection by the end of May. Only original works will be accepted for the optional pieces. Arrangements will not be allowed. No restrictions with regard to the edition of the sheet music (except for the edition specified for the Elementary school lower grades Baroque section) As for repetition: The rule is not to play repeats when performing the set pieces. Repeats are playable when performing the optional pieces. We might in some circumstances ask you to submit the music sheets for judging. We might reluctantly have to interrupt a performance on account of time but in such an event, it will not have any bearing on judgments. Performers' turns in the Preliminary Round and the Final Round will be decided fairly by lot by the organizer. In the Duo Section, whether to play with music or without music is up to the contestants. Please arrange to have someon turn the score pages, if you need.
