1 UPPER SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS HANDBOOK
2 Welcome to the Performing Arts Classes! We are excited that you have chosen to participate in a Performing Arts class. You and your parents/guardians will need to know the information included in the Performing Arts Student Handbook. Please read all the material thoroughly as you will be held responsible for it. The Performing Arts Department is committed to helping students discover and develop their unique abilities, to gain self-confidence and poise, to experience the joy that comes from the creative process and to create memories that will remain with them throughout their lives. Why do we participate in the Performing Arts? Psychologist Abraham Maslow formulated a theory of the needs hierarchy of humans. Most astounding is that 7 of the 8 basic human needs are covered by participating in Performing Arts! Biological (food, oxygen, rest, etc.) Safety (create a place of safety and trust) Attachment (with each other and the audience) Esteem (pride in accomplishment) Cognitive (arts involvement improves I.Q.) Aesthetic (art lifts everyone to a higher level) Self-actualization (getting in touch with the inner self) Spiritual (sharing and giving of self) Performing Arts Dates Fri., Sept. 9 4:00-5:30pm Auditions for Fall Play, MS/HS Sat., Sept. 24 2:30-3:00am International Day Performance Tues., Oct.13 6:00pm LS PAC Rats Show Thurs.-Fri., Nov :00pm Fall Play Sat. 4 POLICIES Grading Music Performance Classes The student's grade per term is based on the following criteria: 25% written or performed tests, 50% rehearsal skills (see rubric below), 25% performance/concert points. Prepared for class with materials and seated at bell Demonstrates musical concepts in rehearsal Listens attentively and responds to director instruction Does not have food, gum, or drinks in rehearsal rooms Displays cooperation with other students and director Treats music, folder, and instrument well (including storage) Uses appropriate posture Exhibits leadership in his or her section Treats costume with care and responsibility Brings a positive attitude to class and shares it Grading Non-performance classes Written, listening, and oral exams are given throughout the course. Conduct Each student is expected to show respect for teachers, fellow students, and chaperones at all times. This includes being able to listen quietly to instructions and to carry them out appropriately, whether in the classroom or in a concert situation. When performing in the community, conduct on and off stage must reflect the standards expected of an ISM school representative. ABSOLUTELY NO TOBACCO, ALCOHOL, OR DRUGS WILL BE TOLERATED. STUDENTS USING THESE SUBSTANCES WILL BE SENT HOME FROM TOUR OR CONCERT APPEARANCES AT THEIR PARENTS / GUARDIANS EXPENSE AND MEMBERSHIP WILL BE TERMINATED. Student Captains: Cast Captains Dance Captains Librarians Costumes Stage Managers Wardrobe Stage Appearance Communications Fundraising Performing Arts Booster Board LEADERSHIP The Upper School Choirs and Drama are supported by Middle and High School parents/guardians who agree to serve for one or more years. They meet periodically during the year and help with fundraising, costumes, publicity, events, and the show choir tour. Performing Arts Parent Volunteers All parents will be asked to sign up for various responsibilities during the year. This is the only way it is possible for us to offer so many opportunities for your child throughout the year. It is also the only way that the fundraising activities for the choir tour can continue. Please go to this link at SignUpGenius for a complete list of volunteer opportunities or type in: Each parent/guardian should volunteer for at least two activities. All of us together make the work easier. NEW THIS YEAR All performing arts information, including performance dates, rehearsal schedules, tour forms, and concert details can be found on the ISM website under Campus Life/Performing Arts. Welcome to the Team!
5 COSTUMES The department will provide all costume items for both Middle School and High School performing groups. Students will be responsible for keeping clothing and costume items hung neatly in garment bags. Lost items will be billed at these rates: Hose - $6.00, Socks - $2.00, Belt - $10.00, Bodysuits - $15.00, Jewelry/accessories $3.00-$15.00, Shoes $30.00-$50.00, Costumes - full amount of replacement. HS Show Choir provided by the Department Women - costumes, accessories, jewelry, hose, bodysuit, shoes Men - costumes, accessories, black belt and socks, dance shoes HS Concert Choir provided by the Department Women maroon robe w/sash, black gown, hose, shoes Men maroon robe w/sash, black pants, tux shirt, black tie, black vest, black socks, black belt, black dress shoes MS Show Choir provided by the Department Boys costume, black belt, black socks, dance shoes Girls costume, accessories, hose or socks, dance shoes MS Concert Choir provided by the Department black pants, black socks, black dress shoes Orchestra/Band provided by the Department Women long black skirt or pants, black top, hose, black shoes Men black pants, white dress shirt, dark tie, black suit jacket, black socks, black belt, black dress shoes Concert Attendance Attendance is required for all concerts and dress rehearsals. The concert is the final exam for any arts class. The only justifiable excused absences from performances are: illness, death or funeral in the immediate family, religious belief conflict, or pre-arrangement by school director. Should a student have to miss a performance, the following procedure must be followed: A written note from a parent/guardian must be given to the teacher prior to that performance. In the event that a student has an absence that has been excused prior to the performance or dress rehearsal or is ill and has notified the school, the student will prepare a written assignment reflective of the concert music. The assignment is due within three school days or a student s grade will be lowered by 25% (the entire amount of the performance grade see grading). If notification does not occur before the activity, the student will not have the opportunity to do a makeup assignment and the student s grade will be lowered by 25%. Being a member of a performance-based organization requires commitment. It is a group effort and the absence of an individual impacts the whole group. Students choosing one of the Performing Arts classes are making a yearlong commitment. The policy for dropping classes as outlined in the Student Handbook also applies to these classes.
6 HS Show Choir/Band Attendance Attendance will be taken at every Concert Choir and Show Choir class. Students who miss three classes per term will be in jeopardy of dismissal from the group. Missing three classes = missing nine periods Tardies will be recorded. Students who consistently come in late will be in jeopardy of dismissal from the group. Tour Individual fundraising opportunities will be provided for those that wish to raise personal funds for the tour. Group fundraising activities are required for all members. Individual accounts are kept for each student. If you are unable to attend a group fundraising opportunity you will not share in the money raised for that event. Students may earn their entire trip cost and be refunded accordingly. If additional money is raised beyond their tour cost it will become part of the general fund. Students are expected to adhere to touring rules as listed in the tour information. Failure to follow these rules will result in dismissal from the tour at the parent s/guardian s expense. Regardless of whether a student is able to attend the tour, they will still be required to attend all other performances during the year. Parents will be given a tour agreement to sign. If a student is not able to attend the tour after the agreement is signed, the parent/guardian will be responsible for charges incurred on the student s behalf. Rehearsal Conduct Students will be expected to be quiet during rehearsals. Repeated talking infractions will be cause for dismissal from the group. Students are expected to be attentive to the director, choreographer and to the choir/band captains. Rehearsal Attire Students must wear tennis shoes at all rehearsals No bare feet! Students may change into dance clothes prior to 4:00pm. FEES Performance classes that involve a costume, and/or competition costs have an accompanying activity fee. Scholarship money is available. Activity fees for musical ensembles includes dinner on concert nights. Please contact Mrs. Everitt for details.
