KJAZZ 88.1 is the media sponsor for the Jazz Series JAZZ SERIES Ahmad Jamal Kenny Barron Quintet The Beautiful Day - Kurt Elling Sings Christmas Branford Marsalis Quartet and Yuko Mabuchi Trio Catherine Russell Ahmad Jamal October 19, 2018 at 8 p.m. Ahmad Jamal began playing piano at age 3, which means he s been at the keyboard for about 85 years! The renowned composer-pianist received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammy Awards in 2017; his diverse stylings and freewheeling improvs have influenced numerous other jazz greats such as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. From big band to bebop to electronic music, Jamal has lived through and drawn from them all. Kenny Barron Quintet November 3, 2018 at 7 and 9 p.m. Jazz pianist, composer and educator Kenny Barron was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in Barron, who celebrates his 75 th birthday in 2018, has built a career based on elegant, expressive playing, innovative improvisation and eclectic influences, such as a fondness for Latin and Caribbean rhythms garnered from his early years with Dizzy Gillespie. His effortless give-and-take with his quintet players, many of them old friends, is a joy to experience.
The Beautiful Day - Kurt Elling Sings Christmas December 15, 2018 at 7 and 9 p.m. It was only natural that the Center ask Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling to do a Christmas show; with numerous ministers in the family and his own divinity studies, he infuses a sense of spirituality and reflection in all his music. Elling s holiday songs include traditional selections and less familiar works, their themes of hope, good will and mystery shining through the lush, uplifting arrangements; he s updated some classic lyrics for contemporary times. Branford Marsalis Quartet and Yuko Mabuchi Trio Center Debut of Yuko Mabuchi January 25, 2019 at 8 p.m. Saxophone superstar Branford Marsalis returns to the Center to blow the house down with his spectacular improvisations. A three-time Grammy winner and NEA Jazz Master, he has earned accolades not only for his incredible jazz performances, but also for his film and theater compositions, his performances of classical music and his dedication to music education. His opening act, Yuko Mabuchi, first studied classical piano in her native Japan, but discovered her true passion after hearing the music of Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock. She set her sights on a career in jazz, and has been dazzling audiences with her fiery playing. Catherine Russell Center Debut March 23, 2019 at 7 and 9 p.m. Sometimes, the backup singers leave the background and move, with an undeniable flourish, to center stage. That s what happened for Catherine Russell, who had toured the world and appeared on more than 200 albums with such stars as Paul Simon, David Bowie and Michael Feinstein before launching her own album in Numerous solo recordings and awards later, she s entertained audiences on four continents with her powerful blues, rich tone, versatile voice, sass-and-brass personality and a repertoire that stretches from today back to the 1920s. Season Ticket Prices for the Jazz Series: $364/7 p.m. performances, $340/9 p.m. performances CABARET SERIES Rita Wilson: Liner Notes Rob and Friends: A Little Night Music Bernadette Peters Steve Tyrell Aaron Lazar: Broadway to Hollywood Rita Wilson: Liner Notes October 11-13, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. Go behind the music to discover the stories leading to songs that have become the soundtrack to so many lives. The sound of these voices filling the theater promises to be simply thrilling! Bernadette Peters January 26, 2019 at 8 p.m. Bewitching Beguiling Beloved Bernadette! The three-time Tony Award recipient, who most recently made the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi her own in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, returns to the Center as her sparkly, captivating self. Known for her renditions of Stephen Sondheim s work, this illustrious entertainer also loves Rodgers and Hammerstein. Steve Tyrell February 7-9, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. Talk about late bloomers! Grammy-winning music producer Steve Tyrell didn t record his first album till he was 50 but he s more than made up for it in the years since. Not only have many of his albums soared to the top five on Billboard s jazz charts, but he s performed concerts throughout the world. The Center favorite returns with a show that celebrates the Great American Songbook, sung with his signature contemporary flair, and honors some of the songwriting greats he s worked with, among them Burt Bacharach. Lazar s golden voice, humorous patter and matinee-idol looks complete the recipe for a memorable evening. Season Ticket Price for the Cabaret Series: $363
CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES Escher String Quartet Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Takács Quartet Fauré Quartett with Luis Primera, double bass Emerson String Quartet Escher String Quartet November 1, 2018 at 8 p.m. Adam Barnett-Hart, violin Danbi Um, violin Pierre Lapointe, viola Brook Speltz, cello Considered one of the finest young string ensembles performing today, the Escher Quartet has been living up to its namesake since its founding in New York in 2005: like Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, these sonic artists bring together individual elements to form a glorious, cohesive whole. Their instrumental interplay, which combines technical precision with warmth and vitality, has reaped accolades nationally and abroad, and elicited invitations from Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman to be the quartet-in-residence at their respective summer festivals. Mozart: Quartet in F Major, K. 590 Britten: Quartet No. 1 in D Major, Op. 25 Dvořák: Quartet in F Major, Op. 96 American Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center January 22, 2019 at 8 p.m. Daniel Hope, violin Paul Neubauer, viola David Finckel, cello Wu Han, piano Esteemed soloists in their own right (and in the case of the married David Finckel and Wu Han, an esteemed duo as well), this foursome bonded from their first performance together in 2009, and their joy of collaboration has touched audiences at every engagement since. Their virtuosic, all-stops-out playing, ability to bring out musical colors dark or light, and exquisite balance propel the evening s program selections, which Finckel, Chamber Music Society co-artistic director with Wu Han, has called three of the most passionate works in chamber music history. Suk: Piano Quartet in A Minor, Op. 1 Brahms: Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op. 60 Dvořák: Piano Quartet No. 2 in E Flat Major, Op. 87
Takács Quartet February 28, 2019 at 8 p.m. Edward Dusinberre, violin Harumi Rhodes, violin Geraldine Walther, viola András Fejér, cello There s a new sound this season for the ensemble s return to the Center; earlier this year, the group welcomed second violinist Harumi Rhodes upon the retirement of founding member Károly Schranz. With a name that means weaver in Hungarian, the ensemble, considered among the foremost performers of Bartók s works, continues to deftly blend their trademark intensity with the lightness and humor for which they re also noted. Haydn: Quartet Op. 76 #1 Bartók: String Quartet #6 Grieg: String Quartet Fauré Quartett with Luis Primera, double bass Center Debut of Luis Primera March 19, 2019 at 8 p.m. Dirk Mommertz, piano Erika Geldsetzer, violin Sascha Froembling, viola Konstantin Heidrich, cello with Luis Primera, double bass When a piano quartet records an album called Popsongs, you know you re in for an ensemble that s innovative. The members of the Fauré Quartett, who met as students in Germany during a 1995 celebration of the French composer s 150 th birthday, are classically trained, but have an eye (and ear) for fresh approaches to music and programming. This concert features a unique pairing from the repertory of piano quintets that include the double bass, along with Frank Bridge s Phantasy, which reflects influences of Brahms happily tempered with Fauré. Gifted Venezuelan double bassist Primera toured with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and Gustavo Dudamel to the United States, South America, Middle East, and Europe. Bridge: Phantasy for Piano Quartet Vaughan Williams: Quintet in C Minor Schubert: Piano Quintet in A Major, D. 667 Trout
Emerson String Quartet May 14, 2019 at 8 p.m. Eugene Drucker, violin Philip Setzer, violin Lawrence Dutton, viola Paul Watkins, cello Additional performers to be announced Shostakovich and the Black Monk: A Russian Fantasy WEST COAST PREMIERE A Center institution for more than a quarter-century, the nine-time Grammy Award-winning Emerson String Quartet returns in this bold intersection of chamber music and theater, co-created by Emerson violinist Philip Setzer. Featuring seven actors and the Quartet, this unique multi-media work depicts the trials and challenges of composer Dmitri Shostakovich, his music was banned by Stalin s Soviet regime, and his unwavering quest to write an opera based on Chekhov s mystical tale, The Black Monk. It s a story of triumph in the face of overwhelming political repression, and it promises to be a highlight of the Center s season. Season ticket price for the Chamber Music Series: $ MUSIC SERIES BONUS OPTIONS Lea Salonga Third Coast Percussion Lea Salonga April 5, 2019 at 8 p.m. A Tony Award winner at age 20 for her performance as Kim in Miss Saigon, Lea Salonga has continued to enthrall audiences on stages around the world with her powerful, crystal-clear soprano and the emotional depth she brings to her singing and storytelling. Expect a dazzling performance packed with songs from her many Broadway credits (including Les Misérables, Flower Drum Song and most recently, Once on This Island) and from her Disney animated features (she is the voice of Disney Princesses) Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan, along with a generous selection of her other favorite tunes. Third Coast Percussion Center Debut April 5, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. David Skidmore, percussion Robert Dillon, percussion Peter Martin, percussion Sean Connors, percussion Third Coast Percussion makes its Center debut performing the West Coast premiere of a new work composed at their request from living music legend Philip Glass. In 2017, this Chicago-based quartet earned the Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. With its roots as an educational group formed as Northwestern University students in 2004, Third Coast Percussion has since become noted for its unusual collaborations (architects and engineers among them) and connection with the audience.
