2 Sunday 9 th November: 7pm. The Northern String Quartet The Northern String Quartet is an exciting and charismatic ensemble which is rapidly rising in the chamber music world. Its members were trained at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music and they will perform Beethoven: opus 18 no.1 Ray Kohn: 12 th quartet (premier) Shostakovitch: 8 th quartet

3 Monday 10 th November: 7pm Zhok Hora Zhok Hora, Sheffield s own klezmer band: Jo Veal clarinet, Ray Kohn violin, Lindsay Aitkenhead viola, Ian Stern guitar & vocals, Dave Westbrook accordion & Richard Neale bass, perform traditional Jewish East European repertoire as well as contemporary klezmer-inspired music from the UK.

4 Tuesday 11 th November: 7pm PAGE 4 Bright Season Bright Season are a traditional folk trio based in South Yorkshire. Michael J Tinker (guitar/vocals), Ella Sprung (fiddle/nyckelharpa/vocals) and Simon Dumpleton (accordion/vocals) bring together influences from the traditional music of England and Scandinavia to deliver foot-stomping tunes, dramatic ballads and heart-warming harmonies.

5 Friday 14 th November: 7pm. THE MUSIC ACADEMY INSPIRING YOUNG MUSICIANS The Sheffield Music Academy where the finest young musicians in the city learn beside top professional staff will be providing a concert: the concert programme will be announced nearer the date. There is no entry fee for this concert: just a leaving money collection on behalf of the Music Academy. The Music Academy is part of the national network of Centres of Advanced Training for the education of exceptionally talented young musicians. Expert tuition and specialist training is offered for young people (aged 8-18) with outstanding ability, dedication and potential, across Sheffield and the surrounding area. Means-tested DfE grants help ensure the vision of identifying and assisting talented young musicians, regardless of their background and personal circumstances, is realised. Saturday 15 th November: 1pm in Shirley House. The final of the Sheffield String Quartet Competition encouraging young musicians to play chamber music. Entry details: Free entry for this to friends and family of the contestants.

6 Saturday 15 th November: 7pm Neil McSweeney Neil McSweeney is one of Sheffield s most outstanding singer-songwriters. The Guardian s Dave Simpson described his deeply felt, brooding songs rich in imagery. He has built up a national profile and has toured as support for Richard Hawley and Bellowhead among others.

7 Sunday 16 th November: 7pm Larkin Strings A concert by the Larkin Strings This young, dynamic ensemble has already attracted considerable attention with their diverse and interesting programmes. Their impressive repertoire of contemporary work will include a premier of the Sheffield-based composer, Ray Kohn s Octet in this concert.

The Performance Plus Project supports both the player and the potential audience in a proactive way, and is a project that deserves support and encouragement. The string quartet competition is open to anyone who lives, works or has received any form of education in the city.
