If you ve never tried a Project festival, you re missing out on an amazing musical weekend wonderland. We re happy to announce the dates for this year s Folk Project Festivals. Our Spring Festival will transpire over Memorial Weekend, May 24 26, 2013 (Friday through Sunday). Our Fall Festival will be held on Columbus Weekend, October 11 13, 2013 (also Friday through Sunday). Mark your calendars now! 2 January 2013 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by NEW Admission price: $8.00 Fri., 1/4: The Kennedys, the Wag When not serving as Nanci Griffith s backup band, The Kennedys are joyfully rocking the folk world with their own unique brand of high-energy performance. It s more than the powerful close-harmony singing. It s more than the hot guitar work. It s more than the driving rhythms and power chords. It s the obvious chemistry between Pete and Maura Kennedy that is so charming and so contagious that the listener can t help but grin and join in their fun. The Wag is the perfect opener for the Kennedys. This four-piece pop rock band features great harmonies behind any of three lead singers that elicit echoes of Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Beatles, or Simon & Garfunkel. They perform original songs sprinkled with occasional covers from the era of their inspiration. Fri., 1/11: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. Fri., 1/18: Dave K leiner & Liz Pagan, Andrew Dunn Dave Kleiner was a founding member of the Folk Project. Together with his wife, Liz Pagan, he presents a highly entertaining mix of his own clever and well crafted songs and some obscure gems written by his contemporaries in the folk and pop fields. He is a very classy guitarist, and Liz adds lead and harmony vocals to the mix. Our opener, Andrew Dunn, is also a Folk Project member. Andy s unassuming stage demeanor belies a performer with strong writing skills. He makes astute observations of the world around him, and translates those observations into songs filled with personal contact, passionate language, and a gentle view of the world. Fri., 1/25: An Agranoff Imperative! RUNA RUNA is on the fast track to be counted among the top Celtic superbands in the world. Philadelphia-based vocalist Shannon Lambert-Ryan has gathered round her an impressive collection of musicians from all over the world, and by way of other impressive groups such as Solas, Clannad, Riverdance, and the Guy Mendilow Band. To her brilliant and expressive vocals, she has added the driving fiddle of Tomoko Omura, the blazing guitar of Fionán de Barra, the mandolin of Dave Curley, and the percussion of Cheryl Prashker. The result is a truly impressive sound worthy to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, Bothy Band, Planxty, and the Chieftains. An Agranoff Imperative. You gotta see them. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children 12 and under are free. Performers know there s no better showcase for your talent than our annual Valentines Extravaganza: a huge audience, an exciting format, a rare showcase. It s a rare opportunity, a real hoot and a dream come true: fronting a great band for a big show. And we have two of the best bands you can imagine. Our 10-piece Valentines Big Boogie Band is the consummate rock band, complete with drums, electric guitars and a full horn section. Fan-fupping-tastic! Rock out! An important note from our Master Arranger: if you want to front the Boogie Band you must get the song info to Andy Koenig (ark@acm.org) by January 26, so he has enough time to work on arrangements, get all the ducks in a row, and so on. You must tell Andy what key you will be be singing in and any other details about the arrangement. What s new is our other band: Each year lovers of pop and jazz standards are accompanied by The Valentine s Love Trio under the direction of Frank Sole. For the first time ever, Frank s added Jersey jazz great Grover Kemble to the combo. Grover, as many of you know, is the consummate jazz and swing guitarist. He s been a member of Sha-Na-Na, was the leader of Za Zu Zaz and he later went on to play concerts with John Pizzarelli, including performances at the 2005 JVC Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall. 7 Folk Project Board Meeting December 2012 Board Meeting: The Summary The Annual Meeting of the Folk Project Board was called to order at 8:18 pm on December 4, 2012 following a delicious dinner at the Chimney Rock Inn in Gillette. Present were Pat Brangs, Lois DeRitter, Jim Gartner, Allan Kugel, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Bob McNally, Eddie Roffman, Bobbie Rosengarten, and Bob Safranek (Trustees); Mike Agranoff, Lori Falco, Gloria Friedman, Joe Graziano, Nancy Kelner, Lindsey Meyer, Pam Robinson, Kevin Redden, Sandie Reilly, Scott Ross, Mark Schaffer, Robin Schaffer, Jean Scully, Rachel Streich, (Other Board Members); Barry Bontempo, Joanne Cronin, Christine DelVecchio, Mike DelVecchio, Marilyn Feldran, Scooter Ferguson, Jennifer Fischer, Bill Henderson, Gary Kazin, Grover Kemble, Mark Levanda, Robin Roffman, and Barrett Wilson (Guests). Absent were Carl Croce, Howie Goldman, and Leigh Walker. The main purpose of the annual meeting is 1) to elect Board members and 2) for committee chairs to summarize their activities for the year. The way the election works is that the general membership (i.e. those in attendance) elect Trustees, the Trustees elect officers, and the Board of Directors elects the new committee chairs. As there were no nominations from the floor, the slate of recommended candidates was elected. Trustees Elected through 2015 were Joanne Cronin, Bob McNally (continuing), and Barrett Wilson. Elected to fill unexpired terms through 2013 were Grover Kemble and Lindsey Meyer. Officers President: Elizabeth Lachowicz; VP: Pam Robinson (continuing); Secretary: Rachel Streich; and Treasurer: Bill Henderson. Committee Chairs Membership co-chairs: Ed Roffman and Carl Croce; Newsletter: Pat Brangs; Sound: Mike DelVecchio; Special Concerts: Scooter Ferguson. The remaining committee chairs are continuing in their present positions. The treasurer reported our finances are sound. In year-end summaries, we heard: Minstrel attendance was up this year, with an average attendance of 91.4 for regular shows, versus 87 in Mike said that net income was lower due to rent increase plus higher performer guarantees, but is still in the black. Three acts broke the comma club, earning over $1,000 at their Minstrel gigs. Mark reported two successful festivals at Camp Bernie and credited the many volunteers who put it all together. Including donated funds, they made over $5,000 which will be plowed into future festivals. Horses Sing None of It has taped an incredible 558 shows over the past 28 years. Sandie noted that this year s uploads to YouTube have drawn viewers from Germany to Australia. Kudos to producer & host Ralph Litwin and all the volunteers. Scott reported 502 addresses on the roster, which includes couples and families, so the actual number of individuals is much higher. We have members in 14 states besides NJ. Lori reported that Electronic Communications met their goal of consolidating all FP mass through Constant Contact. With nearly 3,000 contacts, they have an open rate and click rate higher than the industry standard for non-profits. Nancy cited moving the MinstrelGram to Constant Contact as the biggest Publicity Committee accomplishment this year. She noted they use 6 dozen PR outlets and the FaceBook page has been opened in 9 different languages. >>> 12 Good o the Order/ Community News This is a place to share news about memorable events and challenges you have faced in the past month with your Folk Project Community. Lois DeRitter is excited to be spending her Christmas vacation in Florida with daughter Lauralyn, who will be completing her veterinary school studies at the University of Florida. Lois will drive Lauralyn s car down to Florida but she s trying to determine the best way to get back to NJ. Bob McNally and Evelyn McNally s daughter, Heather, is trekking in Nepal with her boyfriend Greg. They are travelling something called the Annapurna Circuit, staying in Nepalese tea houses and hiking at altitudes from 7,000 all the way up to 17,769 feet! Bob is enjoying his new house in Mount Tabor. Mark and Robin Schaffer are thankful that their sweet white dog, Mercury, is recovering from pancreatitis. Sandie Riley had a great year of bicycling in 2012, riding over 5,000 road miles. She is most proud of having done over 350 miles fundraising to for MS. Sandie says, I will be glad to keep riding for anyone who has a notion to make a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society! Sandie s son, Matt is learning auto body repair; after a recent accident he purchased and installed parts to replace his radiator, quarter panel and front grill. Elizabeth Betsy Rose Lachowicz will be spending Christmas holiday week visiting her family in Chicago. She s excitedly planning to see Wanda Jackson in concert on New Years Eve at The Doubledoor in the Windy City. Among the songs on Wanda Jackson s hit list is one of Betsy Rose s favorites: Riot in Cell Block #9. Elizabeth s son, Thomas, turned 17 in December. Jean Scully has been volunteering with Team Jersey to help victims of Hurricane Sandy restore their houses. Jean says, It feels so good to be helping people! Jean is settling into her new car, a Saturn, after the death of her Prius. It s a good car, but it s hard to go from 45mpg down to 25. Minutes Continued>>> Eddie remarked on our amazing accomplishments this year and noted that the FP produced close to 150 separate activities, all planned and run by volunteers. He thanked everyone for working so hard during the past year and said, our most important currency is volunteering, sharing, and the music we create together.
