From our annual side-byside concert, in which students may play beside an orchestra member with the same instrument, to the annual Symphony Kids recital, we are so proud to be instrumental in their development. We welcome Rita Sloan, of the University of Maryland Piano faculty and the Aspen Ensemble, in her Philharmonic debut as guest Charles Ellis, Music Director Prince George s Philharmonic artist for

4 music director s l e t t e r Welcome to the Prince George s Philharmonic s season. Our season opens in October with an all-beethoven program featuring the rarely-performed King Stephan Overture and the beloved Pastoral Symphony. We welcome Rita Sloan, of the University of Maryland Piano faculty and the Aspen Ensemble, in her Philharmonic debut as guest Charles Ellis, Music Director Prince George s Philharmonic artist for Beethoven s Fourth Piano Concerto. November s Sunday matinee performance spotlights the development of late Romantic German composition from Schumann, on through Wagner, to the tone poems of Richard Strauss. February features French and French-influenced music, as approximately 20 of Prince George s County s outstanding high school musicians augment the orchestra s ranks for our annual side-by-side performance. Violinist Emil Chudnovsky will solo in Henryk Wieniawski s Second Violin Concerto. The program concludes with an utterly extravagant symphonic work, Hector Berlioz s Symphonie fantastique. In the last concerts of our season, we welcome back two old friends: cellist Anthony Elliott and pianist Awadagin Pratt. In March, Mr. Elliott performs Serge Prokofiev s Symphony Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, a work which was dedicated to former National Symphony Music Director Mstislav Rostropovich. We will also perform the least frequently heard of the Brahms Symphonies, the Third. Our season finale in May begins with a program of popular music of the 1920 s, including Mr. Pratt s performance of George Gershwin s beloved Rhapsody in Blue. It closes with Shostakovich s Symphony No. 10, a stirring affirmation of an individual s power to resist and ultimately overcome Soviet political oppression. Education director s l e t t e r Greetings, Friends The Anne Gentry Educational Outreach Program, known as Symphony Kids, is named for the Philharmonic s former Executive Director, Anne Gentry. Ms.

The program provides scholarship funding to support quality private instruction for deserving middle and high school music students otherwise unable to afford music lessons.

5 Education director s l e t t e r Greetings, Friends The Anne Gentry Educational Outreach Program, known as Symphony Kids, is named for the Philharmonic s former Executive Director, Anne Gentry. Ms. Gentry and a dedicated team of three teachers launched Symphony Kids with an opening enrollment of ten students. The program provides scholarship funding to support quality private instruction for deserving middle and high school music students otherwise unable to afford music lessons. By 2010, twenty student-musicians were participating in the program. In addition to scholarships, other components of our Education program include: Cheryl Nkeba, Director Educational Outreach 4 Free tickets to all our concerts for those 18 years old and younger 4 An annual side-by-side performance during which selected high school musicians play alongside Philharmonic members in concert 4 A series of master classes in which Philharmonic guest artists serve as mentors and coaches for exceptionally talented young players 4 Our annual celebration of Music in our Schools Month (March), which for the second year will donate a portion of the box office proceeds to the Instrumental Music Department of the Prince George s County Public Schools. On behalf of the Symphony Kids, I thank you for your help in sustaining this important program. I invite you to become involved and help this program reach its full potential.
