2019 Indoor Percussion Packet

Welcome Thank you for your interest in the percussion program here at Clover High School This will be the primary material used to determine your position in the ensemble as well as being used in all rehearsals. For rehearsal dates and times, please visit We urge you to read and comprehend the technical descriptions as well as memorize the music. Your success in the ensemble directly relates to your ability to understand everything that is asked of you. We expect our musicians to be mature, intuitive, teachable, humble, physically fit and can afford the time commitments while always striving to be the best they can possibly be. Being a member of the percussion program at Clover is a big commitment, but it is extremely rewarding and life-changing. We hope that you get the most from your experience and we look forward to working with you! - Clover Band Staff Program Objective The Clover Percussion program provides an opportunity for all students to hone their musical and marching abilities through the art of percussion performance. Students will create and perfect a production showcasing a high level of musicality, athleticism, and showmanship. In addition to solidifying musical skill sets, this experience will produce better musicians, better teammates, and ultimately, better people. The Pride of Clover Indoor Program represents more than the commitment and discipline associated with an awardwinning percussion program. The band students and staff take the stage each year as ambassadors representing Clover High School. Their pride and social conduct exemplify the dignity Clover Band students take with them to outside events. Eligibility Requirements The Percussion Ensemble is open to Clover High School instrumental music students. Clinics will introduce basic skills to interested participants in the month of November, during which the staff will evaluate them. In order to become part of the Ensemble, students must meet the following requirements: Students enrolled in the CHS music program and non-musicians with administrative approval (seniors are exempt): 1. Are eligible by audition only. 2. Must maintain a solid academic performance as well as in the ensemble. 3. Are expected to follow all rehearsal/performance requirements as outlined by this handbook and CHS code of conduct. 4. Students not currently enrolled in the marching band program are encouraged to do so for the following school year to maintain their eligibility. 5. Students must be in good standing with the program to maintain eligibility for participation (strong commitment to excellence, no disciplinary issues/indifference toward other members or staff/negative attitude, etc).

A Message from the Directors Joe Gulledge Courtney Loftis Ryan Hall The Clover Band Program has a long tradition of excellence that dates back to This excellence has come about through hard work, dedication, and a system of rules and expectations. What makes band such an invaluable experience is the level of performance and personal accountability expected of each and every student in the program. Each student is expected to give L00% both as an individual and team player, always striving to become the best musician possible! Because the strength of our ensembles is not determined by the top players but by the depth of talent within the program, all members play an integral role in the quest for superior musicianship. Clover Band members should be serious about making music and should study privately on their instruments. By the time a student becomes a member of the Wind Ensemble, he or she is performing college level music with the maturity and finesse of a college player. Students also learn time management skills and cooperation with others. Therefore, band students leave Clover High School with a greater ability to deal with the rigors of college and the challenges of adult life. The success and quality of the Clover High Bands depends on the interest and cooperation of every band member and parent. Please take this handbook seriously and read it carefully. lt is intended to help you understand the expectations that will be placed on you as a band member, to enable the directors to serve you with the finest music education experience possible, and to attain the highest performing level possible to serve our community.

A Statement of Policy ln order to assist band members and parents in understanding areas of responsibility, a statement of band policy is herein set forth. Becoming familiar with this policy will enable each individual to make the most of this great opportunity to be a member of the Clover High School band program, becoming a better person and a better musician. We firmly believe that the student should improve through regular practice. The HAPPIEST student is the one who is improving through regular habits of practice and daily progress. He/she must not only know right from wrong, but must be able to stand for principles. He/she must develop a high sense of purpose toward which he/she is willing to work. RESPONSIBILITY is the focus behind any level of achievement within this program. We intend to conduct ourselves in a manner that will facilitate all students in learning and bettering themselves. The importance of Attitude The greatest single factor that will determine the success of any individual or organization is attitude. The kind of person that you are is an individual choice and how we feel about something, which involves attitude, is one of the few actual independent choices that we have in life. lt takes intense dedication to reach goals. Students should learn to discipline themselves to daily practice on fundamentals. The "right attitude" must be present along with sincerity, concentration, and dedication as the basic foundation. Such an attitude makes an artistic performance inevitable and is the difference between a winning organization and a mediocre group. You who are in band are a favored few. The band can do much for you. Make the most of it in every rehearsal and performance. The importance of Discipline Because of the nature of the organization, band discipline must be strict. Band students and parents must be willing to accept the ideals, principles and rules of the organization. Because the band members are constantly on display, each must always be aware of the importance of good behavior. The student should always remember that he or she represents the organization, school and community whenever he or she performs or appears publicly. Any misconduct casts a direct reflection on Clover High School and may well undo the good work of hundreds of loyal students. Objectives of the Band Program To teach music by its actual performance To develop performance skills of the various wind and percussion instruments To provide for the musical needs of the school and the community To provide all students with the opportunity for worthy use of their time, a means for self-expression, and a healthy social experience To develop the ability to function as a responsible member of a group, enhance interaction, & develop Esprit de Corps To foster leadership skills within each student Duties of a Band Member Be on time to all rehearsals and performances. *To BE EARLY IS TO BE ON TIME TO BE ON TIME IS TO BE LATE!" Upon entering the rehearsal setting, acquire your instrument and go directly to your seat. When the director or staff member steps on the podium or asks for your attention, all talking should cease. Come to rehearsal with a GOOD ATTITUDE. There is no excess playing (i.e. horsing around on the instrument); Only good warm-up material. Make a real effort to improve on a daily basis and establish a good practice routine.

At the end of rehearsal, put all materials in their proper place. Maintain a strong academic standing in all course work. Become responsible for and assume responsibility for your own actions. Admit when you are wrong. Have a proper respect for yourself and those in authority. Read and play music with insight - have musical expectations. Students' responsibility to the organization As members of this organization, you have a great deal of responsibility. It is essential to any program that if certain expectations are to be met that they coordinate with the privileges, rewards, and duties of the band program. To Ourselves YOU have the primary responsibility of developing your own abilities. The benefits of a good instrument and private instruction can never be underestimated. What you put into it is what you will get out of it. The director is ALWAYS available for your guidance and encouragement - just ask! To the School Clover School District provides us with the resources for rehearsals, performances, and some equipment. The Band Booster Club also provides a support network, both financially and philosophically. WE have the responsibility to provide the best possible services to our community. To Music Music has always been a part of our culture. We must take what we have and use it for the betterment of that culture. No one expects virtuoso musicians, only your very best! The great composer Gustav Mahler once said that only 1O% of a piece of music is on the page. lf that is the case, then we as musicians have the duty of creating and producing the other 90%. The joy of music is not in everything that is apparent. It must be discovered and created. To Each Other We must always do what is best for the WELFARE of the group. There can be no selfish acts solely for the benefit of the individual, but for all. Respect each other. lf there are conflicts, find a way to resolve them. Never insult another band member's integrity. The word "band" means that we are banded together and that there is no separation Parents' Responsibility to the Band It is the responsibility of every parent and guardian to see that the policies outlined in the HANDBOOK are followed and that the form in the back is signed and returned. This states that you UNDERSTAND the policies as set within, and that any questions are to be directed to the band director by making an appointment. Each parent IS responsible for the attendance of their child at all band functions. It is the responsibility of each parent to see that their child practices his / her instrument daily. The hands of the directors are tied without the help of parents.

How Parents Can Help When a "band question" arises, it is important that you get factual information before discussing it with others. We do more harm to ourselves, the band family, when we talk about things that contain one or more "falsehoods" but consider them facts. lf questions arise, it is important to remember this axiom: lf it is a performance issue or anything dealing with the band proper, contact Mr. Gulledge. lf it is a fundraising question or anything dealing with parent issues, talk with the booster club president. Show an interest in the music study of your child. Arrange a regular time for your child to practice and find a quiet place where he/she can practice without interruption. Keep the instrument in good repair and keep at least three reeds in the case; get a metronome! Be extra-careful with school-owned instruments. Repair costs are high! Teach your child to be prepared and on time to each rehearsal or lesson. Provide private instruction! Make faithful attendance at all band activities important. Notify the teacher if the student is to be absent for rehearsals or lessons... Attend booster meetings, concerts, games, and contests Turn in fundraising money on time THE CLOVER HIGH MARCHING BAND is a course offering of the CHS band program and the most visible and active of the performing groups, giving approximately 20 performances a year including football games, competitions, and parades. This class meets every day during 3'd or 4th block 1st semester. Students in band at Clover High School are required to march. Students who play a fall sport whose practice schedule directly conflicts with the marching band's practice schedule are exempt from this rule, provided the student takes private lessons during the fall or if schedule permitting, is registered for Fall Concert Band. It is the student's responsibility in this case to contact Mr. Gulledge, Mrs. Loftis, or Mr. Hall for suitable private lesson teachers. Private lessons will begin by the end of October or the beginning of November Attendance All band members are required to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances unless excused by the Director. Coordinate band with school and outside activities! Most band performances are listed on the Fall Schedule, but occasional extra rehearsals and/or performances may be added during the season. Few exceptions are made in the policy of requiring members to make all rehearsals and performances. The following apply when dealing with attendance: 1. Be present for all rehearsals and performances. 2. Be prompt for all functions. (Remember "To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be LATE!!!") There is no excuse for arriving late for a performance. Any student who has an unexcused tardy for a performance or is late from 3'd quarter break (during football games) will lose privileges and may have their grade lowered. 3. All absences from practices or performances (except in extreme emergency) must be excused in advance. **ln case of illness or emergency, PARENTS should contact the Director in person or by phone. A note from the parent or doctor must accompany the student upon return. Abuse of this will not be tolerated. Emergencies only!!!

"NO SHOWS" TO REHEARSAL A "no show" is defined as an absent student that cannot be accounted for due to lack of a phone call or simply cutting rehearsal. ln such case, the student will lose 1 letter grade for the nine weeks per absence and may lose the opportunity to participate in the next performance by the band. For marching band, an alternate may be placed in the empty spot. This decision will be made by the director based on what is best for the entire group. MISSED PERFORMANCE - We cannot march holes! Students will fail the nine weeks for any missed performance that has not been excused by the director IN ADVANCE! 1. Requests for absence because of other events, such as weddings, etc, must be presented to the Director in writing at least one month prior to the event for the absence to be excused. 2. Doctor/dental appointments are not considered excused absences unless they are emergency or sick visits. Every possible effort should be made to schedule doctor/dental appointments on WEDNESDAYS if at all possible. 3. Unexcused absences from after-school rehearsals may result in permanent alternate status for the remainder of the marching season. Repeated offenses will result in dismissal from participation in the marching band. Any unexcused absence also will lower a student's grade by one letter. 4. All band members are required to attend band camp. Members who fail to attend camp may become alternates. 5. Members should not plan family vacations during band camp. Marching band schedules are given out in plenty of time to plan around band camp. 6. Marching band is a performance-based organization and we will march in a light rain or drizzle as long as lightning is not present. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR THE WEATHER!! Always report as scheduled! CONFLICTS WITH BAND Conflicts between band and other activities or events are the responsibility of the student. Rehearsal and performance schedules are given out in advance so that arrangements can be made. Students should avoid becoming involved with activities that may directly conflict with band activities. When outside activities create hardships concerning band, unless it is a rare and unusual situation that may only happen once, the student will need to consult with the director about alternatives that may be possible. Students should have a calendar book and be aware of all band dates well ahead of schedule. It is the policy of the band to assist students when conflicts occur within the scope of the band policy. Students are reminded that band is a demanding activity and that involvement in outside activities during marching season should be limited to those that are compatible with the band schedule. All conflicts in regards to performances must be worked out in favor of the student's responsibility to band. Work is not an excuse for missing any band activity.

CONDUCT 1. All students shall at all times conduct themselves in a manner that would become a member of our organization. 2. Each member will at all time show respect and courtesy to Directors, instructors, and Band Officers. 3. The possession or use of any alcoholic beverages, tobacco in any form, controlled substances (drugs) or pornographic materials of any kind will not be tolerated while participating in any band activity. Possession is just as great an offense as consumption. Students found in violation will be suspended or removed from the program and disciplined according to school guidelines. 4. NO TALKING while rehearsal is in progress. This includes the practice field. 5. No vulgarity, misconduct, or obscenities will be tolerated. 6. Do not play individually during rehearsals or while in the stands at ball games. 7. DO NOT play ANY wind or percussion instrument other than your own or the instrument assigned to you. 8. Appropriate clothing and shoes must be worn at all times while on school property and attending school-sponsored activities. Clothing advertising alcohol, tobacco products or obscene phrases or symbols will not be permitted. (Remember: You are representing our school, and you are only as good as you look!!!) 9. All band members are expected to help and assist in the protection of school equipment. This means all equipment whether it is assignment to you or not!!! 10. All students driving cars to rehearsals and performances will observe safety and courtesy at all times. Please keep speeds in the parking lot at posted limits. a. NO HOT RODDING!! REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE 1. Report to bandroom/stadium area at least minutes before appointed time. 2. Attendance will be taken at appointed time and members are to be in their designated areas prior to roll call. Tardiness or absences may affect your grade and will trigger other punitive actions! 3. Stay in bandroom/designated area. Do not wander around school grounds. (Off-limits area violation) 4. NO friends or relatives in school buildings without approval of the Director. 5. Directions from Drum Major and other bandleaders will be respected and followed at all times. Remember that it is a tremendous responsibility and your cooperation is expected and required! 6. Band Officer/Leaders are appointed positions and are a direct extension of the Directors and Instructors. They will be treated with respect at all times. 7. When "ATTENTION/SET" is called, all members will immediately come to attention and stop talking.

GRADING POLICY Grades are assigned for the band class and any activity that is considered co-curricular. Some performances may fall outside of the school day. Major Grades: 60% Students must also attend all functions as required by the band director. (Rehearsals, Competitions, Sectionals, FB games, etc.) Students must have their instruments and a pencil at every rehearsal, and show maximum effort to earn the best grade. Minor Grades: 40% A band syllabus and pass-off sheet will be handed out at the beginning of the semester. Students are responsible for all assignments, including pass-offs and recorded examples of performance. UNIFORMS Each member will be issued (1) complete set of uniforms for the marching season. (Full Dress Uniform & Warm-Weather Uniform). Appropriate uniform and accessories will be worn at all performances. Full uniform will be worn at all times unless otherwise instructed by the Director. Full uniform includes shoes, socks, bibbers, band t-shirt, jacket, gantlets & hat. Members will be allowed to remove their hats and un-fasten their top collar in the stands during the game. AT NO TIME SHOULD A MEMBER BE FOUND PARTIALLY IN UNIFORM! (No un-zipped jackets or bibbers are allowed at any time.) Each member will be financially responsible for any damage to his/her uniforms due to neglect. Any member found abusing a uniform will be reported to the Principal and his/her parents immediately. This is considered vandalism of school property and will be treated as such. Only approved black marching band shoes will be allowed while in uniform. (Purchased by student from the band!) Band T-shirt will be worn under band coat at all times. (Provided with Uniform!) Complete uniform will be checked before each performance. (INSPECTION) inappropriate dress will not be permitted and students will be removed from the performance and your grade will suffer. ALL hair will be put-up under hats for marching band performances. NO EXCEPTIONS! This is a competition ruling. NO JEWELRY of any kind will be allowed on the field. This is also a competition ruling. (This includes any facial body piercing!) PRIDE prevents Clover Band members from marching in wrinkled uniforms. The uniform will be issued on a special hanger. Hang pants on the creases when you put uniforms in the garment bags. Uniforms will be stored on issued hangers: pants properly hung and the uniform bag over jacket and hat in issued box. Uniforms will be stored in the CHS band room on the approved racks. All students will store their uniform away properly after every performance. Failure to do so will result in laps and a grade reduction.

COMPETITIONS Competitions are special events where we get to perform for a sophisticated audience and very competent judges. WE ARE THERE TO DO OUR BEST- NOT TO WIN!! lf we do our best, then everything will take care of itself. All parents are encouraged to attend competitions and support the band. Students may use the band phone to call following a trip. 1. All school and band rules and guidelines are in effect at competitions. 2. Marching band competitions always occur on Saturday. You will be given a list of the competitions dates as soon as we have determined which ones we will attend. 3. Work conflicts are NOT an excused absence from competitions. (WE CANNOT MARCH HOLES!!!) 4. ALL CLOVER BAND performances are considered required attendance. lf an unavoidable conflict or emergency arises, contact the Director IMMEDIATELY!! DO NOT WAIT TO INFORM THE DIRECTORS AT THE LAST MINUTE!!! 5. Directors or Band Captain/Drum Majors will post departure and return times. Arrival times back at CHS will be adhered to as much as humanly possible. BAND ROOM RULES AND REGULATIONS Band room hours: M-F 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. DO NOT PLAYANY INSTRUMENT THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU OR IS NOT ASSIGNED TO YOU WITHOUT SPECIFIC PERMISSION FROM THE DIRECTOR. Parents please note that we cannot legally give your child a ride home except in emergencies. It is very frustrating for us to sit in the parking lot for hours with one student waiting on a ride home.

WINTER PROGRAMS The Winter Ensemble programs (Winter Guard & Winter Percussion) are a vital part of the total band program experience at Clover High School. These programs are offered primarily as a means for color guard & percussion students to continue to develop their skills during the winter months for the upcoming marching band season. While any band student may participate, the primary purpose of these groups is to strengthen the guard and percussion programs. The following are general rules for participation in the CHS Winter Ensemble Programs. The instructors may have other requirements in addition to these for being members of a winter ensemble group. Only Clover High School students and the middle schools that feed into Clover High School will be eligible to participate in the CHS Winter Ensemble Programs. The instructors reserve the right to invite middle school students to be a part of a high school winter ensembles. All debts must be below $250 by December 1st or a student will not be allowed to participate in any winter ensemble without director approval/permission. 3. It should be understood that students are expected to remain on their primary instrument/skill position during the fall & winter seasons. Occasionally students may be allowed to change instrument/skill positions, but the final decision will always be made with the idea that the director s will do what they feel is best for the band program, not the individual students. All director decisions are final and are not open for discussion or debate. 4. Students who participate in a winter ensemble will not be allowed to switch to a new instrument or position in the marching band the following year without permission. The CHS winter ensembles purpose is not to train any student to switch from their primary instrument. 5. Wind & percussion students who participate in a winter ensemble must be enrolled in a band class during 2nd semester. Students with a legitimate course conflict will be allowed to participate with director approval. 6. Percussion & color guard members will always have priority over wind players for being included in these ensembles. The winter ensemble instructors will make all final decisions for membership in these groups. Their decisions will be final. 7. Students will only be allowed to participate in 1 winter ensemble group during 2nd semester. This eliminates any possible conflicts and allows for academic responsibility. 8. All winter ensemble participants are required to maintain a B average in their respective band classes in order to participate in the winter ensembles.

9. All wind & percussionists are required to audition for Region band in order to be eligible for participation in the winter ensembles unless excused by a director. 10. Percussion & color guard Students wishing to be section leaders/captains must participate in their respective winter ensemble to be eligible for a leadership position in the fall. This is no different than the Region Band/Solo & Ensemble requirement. It is expected that all color guard & percussion students participate in their respective winter ensembles so that their training and development can continue throughout the entire year. Winter Guard International Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts [WGI) is the world's premier organization producing indoor color guard and percussion ensemble competitions. As a non-profit youth organization, WGI serves as the leading governing body of the winter guard and indoor percussion activities. It is called the Sport of the Arts because it brings music to life through performance in a competitive format. Established in 1977, the sport continues to evolve and grow. There were more than 36,000 participants at the regional level, and more than 12,000 participants at the Sport of the Arts World Championships during the 2014 season. WGI Sport of the Arts provides a venue for young people to achieve the extraordinary through performance and competition. Color guard and indoor marching percussion ensembles are considered part of the music education curriculum by most schools. Education is the basis for the developmental criteria, which defines the measurement for competitive advancement. WGI Sport of the Arts provides curriculum materials for classes in equipment, movement, and design. WGI provides a full educational program for instructors and judges through seminars and video materials. The organization promotes higher education by annually awarding $20,000 in academic scholarships to students from our competing units. For more information visit

FUNDRAISING The Clover High Band Booster Club is the financial backbone of the band, and without the majority of the parent participation, the band could not exist. Parents and students are strongly encouraged to participate in all fundraising activities. Many trips are funded by the organization. However, some expenses for longer trips will require students being responsible for some or all costs involved. Of course, the Booster club welcomes any donations! Please contact the Directors if you know of someone wanting to donate money or supplies to the band. Donations may also be sent to P.O. This is the single most musically beneficial experience students are offered at Clover High School! The one on one approach allows students to move at a much faster rate than in class. The benefits of private instruction go far beyond what can be accomplished in the classroom. Responsibility, dedication, and discipline will be developed in each child. Student interest and commitment to the band program and their instrument will greatly increase. The more involved students become the more fun they will have with the entire band experience. Private instructors guide students in preparation for Region and State auditions, Solo & Ensemble, concerts, college scholarship auditions, and much more. A recent survey of students in the SC All-State Bands revealed that over 75% of those students earning a chair in the band were involved in lessons! ln addition, the best band programs in South Carolina have more students involved in private lessons. lf possible, the Clover Bands is going to provide ANY eligible student the opportunity to take private lessons at a reduced cost or no cost at all. ln order to be eligible, students must be in good standing with the band program. This includes having all fees paid (or a prearranged payment schedule) and meeting the minimum quota for each fundraiser. The purpose of this program is to provide ALL students in good standing with the opportunity to study, regardless of financial status. Private lessons will begin at the end of October or the beginning of November.

A Few Tips As a member of the Clover percussion section it is necessary for you to understand the responsibilities you will have in this percussion section. Other than show design and instruction given to you by the staff, the single most important thing you can have is a commitment to this section. In addition, attendance and attitude are extremely important. Here are the three A s for you to remember: ATTENDANCE If you attend rehearsals consistently, you will maximize your potential for improvement (as well as the entire ensemble) and for reaching the goal of being the best that you can be. ATTITUDE When your attitude is completely positive and you are eager to learn despite the challenges, you can and will achieve all of the goals you set for yourself. ABILITY In the end, your ability is the direct result of the level of your commitment to the above two A s. Your ability improves parallel to your attendance and to your attitude. The Four Building Blocks Technique: Correct technique serves as our foundation for quality execution. Reading: A musician s ability to read music determines the speed at which they subdivide rhythms and assimilate musical information. Musicianship: An AWARENESS of the sound you create, the sound around you, and the other musicians around you. Performance: Despite being the culmination and mastery of the above, it will define the image of the ensemble, and is to be practiced from the beginning.

Methods & Techniques In order to achieve our goal of being the absolute best in the activity, we must simultaneously achieve exact uniformity in technique, touch, sound quality, rhythmic clarity, and dynamic clarity Always strive for a BIG, STRONG, uniform quality of sound as you play---quality of sound is everything Always strive for a relaxed physical sensation Allow the stick to resonate naturally within the hand, don t suffocate it Efficient Motion/Use of energy while maintaining rhythmic accuracy at all times Create presence behind the instrument--- big upper body while maintaining relaxation When practicing, don t be afraid to check yourself... Practice as often as possible on a drum, with a met, marking time, in front of a mirror to encourage absolute consistency Although not hand-technique related, ALWAYS strive for perfect rhythms, sound quality, and consistency Stick Heights/Dynamics The following stick heights must be strictly followed by each player in the battery to ensure a consistent look and quality of sound throughout the line. Using a mirror while practicing helps to obtain the correct stick heights. pp 1 ½" (grace note height) p 3" (parallel to the drum head) mp 4" mf 6" (money height) f 9" ff 12" (vertical) fff 15" (vertical with arm)

Implement Grip Snare Right and Left Hand: Thumb/Index finger connect approx. 1/3 from the bottom of the stick The right hand fulcrum: The thumb is positioned directly along the side of the stick. The forefinger wraps around the stick and is even with the thumb. The stick is cradled by the middle, ring, and pinky fingers. All fingers are in contact with the stick and will remain free of tension. Middle, ring, and pinky fingers are all wrapped naturally around the stick, while never completely leaving the stick when in motion The butt of the stick should be slightly visible out the back of the hand Playing Position Relax your arms at your side. With relaxed shoulders, bend the arms from the elbow so your wrists are just about waist-level. This will determine the height of your drum. Beads will be in the center of the head, as close as possible without touching one another. Keep the beads as close to the head as possible without resting on the head.

Tenors Matched Grip The grip follows the line of the forearm. The top of the hand is slightly sloped outward for the most natural position. The fulcrum is created by placing the thumb directly along the side of the stick. The forefinger wraps around the stick and is even with the thumb. The stick is cradled by the middle, ring, and pinky fingers. All fingers are in contact with the mallet/ stick and should remain free of tension. Playing Position The head of the stick/mallet should rest as close to the head as possible without touching it. Arms should rest comfortably and naturally at the sides so that shoulders are relaxed. Elbows should not be pushed away from the body, nor should they be unusually tight against the body. When in this position, sticks/mallets will create a natural angle of the sticks that is close to but not quite parallel to the floor. Playing areas are a very important part of creating a good sound on tenors. It is very important for tenor drummers to have full control of a natural stroke and good sound on ONE DRUM before applying it to split parts around the drums.

Bass Drum Matched Grip The bass mallet should be held comfortably with the fulcrum placed towards the bottom portion of the fulcrum notch. The thumb should be on top of the mallet and should point to the mallet head. There should be no visible daylight between the thumb and first finger, and it is essential that no tension exists between the thumb and fist finger. Begin with both arms hanging down to your side with the thumbs on the top of the mallets and your hands by your legs. The mallets should point forward and down at a 45-degree angle. Bring your arms up (bending at the elbows) until the forearms are approximately parallel to the ground. Bring your forearms toward the drum so they touch the bass drum rim. Memorize what part of your arm touches the rim so you will be able to always find the center of the bass head Playing Position Mallets should be parallel to the drumhead and the bead should be in the center of the drum head. Your arms should hang naturally on both sides of your body. Playing is a turn of the wrist just like you were playing on a snare. The use of the fingers is still very important in bass drumming. (3 finger technique) It is essential that all the players in a bass line understand their individual part, how it relates to their feet, how their part relates to other parts, and have the same interpretation of the space between all the notes. On bass drum, all split parts can be simplified to some sort of check or skeleton pattern. Before we can play 2 s, 3 s, and 4 s we must be able to play the check pattern in time with the feet. Once the check pattern is well-established any subsequent notes added must be evenly spaced (relative to the first note on each drum). It is imperative that bass drummers understand basic note groupings and are able to play any partial (with either hand) comfortably.

Stroke The stroke that we use is primarily made with the wrist. The forearm contributes to the weight of the stoke while incorporating the fingers. The goal is a natural motion that uses a harmony of wrist, forearms, and fingers. Focus on allowing the stick to vibrate in the hand. Avoid Squeezing the stick as this will choke off the sound and diminish sound quality. This will help to maintain a natural stroke. There should be a weight to your stroke which will produce a big, full sound. Make the stick feel heavy in your hands. To achieve this, it s important to realize that higher volumes will typically require a higher stroke velocity. This is partly to ensure you re producing a big sound, but also to propel the stick so that it rebounds back to its full stroke position. During the up-and-down motion of the stroke, focus on creating a CONSTANT MOTION with the stick. When stopping the stick (i.e., during accent/tap patterns), don t squeeze the stick. Make a point of practicing accent/tap patterns slowly, focusing on eliminating tension in the grip. Stroke Types Full Stroke: Stroke that uses the natural rebound of the drumhead and stick to create the fullest sound possible. Ends upwards, at the desired height. Down Stroke: Stroke in which the stick does not return to its original height. Ends in the down position. Despite stopping the stick downward, this should not create extra tension or any difference in sound from the full stroke. This stroke is used to play two-height passages. Tap Stroke: See Full Stroke; used in the context of a lower dynamic level. Up Stroke: Connects lower dynamic to higher dynamic strokes. Confidence We are striving for the highest levels of performance quality. It is important that you play with a high degree of confidence and authority. Confident players play with a level of calmness and relaxation that should feel good to both the player and the listener. True confidence is a powerful thing and will help you fit into the line.

Audition Procedures Auditions will take place during the month of November. Performance will be evaluated and determined by the instructional staff. Students auditioning for Indoor Percussion Ensemble need to adequately prepare themselves for the audition process. Individuals auditioning for the ensemble are expected to be up front about their capabilities and able to justify their membership would benefit themselves and the ensemble. Drumline Roster Fluidity Disclaimer: Drumline is always a working document. Drumline placements are ALWAYS TENTATIVE and ALWAYS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. To practice or not to practice? The faculty and/or staff do not control the level of competition or commitment within the group. The members do. The faculty/staff simply direct and manages it. As it pertains to a student s placement, the best decision will always be made for the student, the group, the program, and the school. Sometimes this means the roster placements could shift throughout the season. Also, students improve, people move in, people leave, show design requirements develop, instrument needs change, someone gets injured, etc. Drumline is a working document! Extra Notes... Members will be expected to learn the technique of their instrument and will be required to demonstrate with proficiency. All members are required to be at ALL rehearsals. If a member has a conflict with rehearsal, they MUST communicate to the Director of Percussion AND Director(s) in advance. It is VERY important that all members are punctual and prepared. Our success will depend on individual preparation. If you have any questions, please feel free to Mr. Ryan Hall at: Ryan.Hall@clover.k12.sc.us Or Assistant Percussion Director, Anne Lewis at: CloverPercussion@gmail.com 5 Minutes Early Is On Time; On Time Is Late; Late Is Unacceptable Punctuality says a lot about you. Before and After Rehearsals: Set up your instruments for the ENTIRE rehearsal before the rehearsal starts! EVERYONE should stay and help put equipment away after rehearsal; no one should leave until everything is put away! Put things back EXACTLY where you found them! Make sure that doors and cabinets are locked after each rehearsal!

Responsibilities throughout the season: After School Rehearsals All percussion students are required to attend every after-school rehearsal on Tuesday and Thursday. Percussion sectionals will be held on Monday after school and are required by every student. See the official Bands of Clover Handbook for detailed policies regarding excused absences and grading. Under no circumstance should there be an absence for a performance unless specific approval by the director. For ALL absences, the following procedure should be followed by all students/parents: Ø Director must be notified in advance (when possible). Ø For illness, a parent note or doctor s excuse must be submitted. Ø Although cleared by the school office, absences from a band activity that same day must be cleared with the director as well please call the band room. Ø In extreme cases, a phone message may be left on the band answering machine, WITH a follow-up personal call. Ø Follow-up is the sole responsibility of the student. The Truck Loading and unloading the truck is something that develops into a routine over the course of the season. Depending on the number of veterans in the group this may or may not take a lot of time. Jobs will be assigned to specific students. Care for our equipment is of the upmost concern. Instruments must be loaded onto the truck thoughtfully and carefully with consideration to the endurance of many hours of highway speeds on rough roads. The truck must be unloaded with efficiency and organization. This is a TEAM effort. All instruments are to be lined up neatly such that we look good ALL THE TIME. More on this later...
