1 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND NEW MUSIC USA FEBRUARY 22 23, 2019 CHAMPAIGN, IL REGISTRATION FOR STUDENT COMPOSERS In partnership with New Music USA and Music Alive, the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra will host a Composers Institute for composers who are undergraduates, graduates, or who have graduated in the past two years. The Institute will focus on skills and information needed to advance a professional composing career. The Institute is open to composers who live within a 200-mile radius of Champaign- Urbana and there is no fee to attend. To register, visit for details. Enrollment is limited to the first forty students who register for the two-day Institute by January 28, CALL FOR SCORES AND READING SESSION The Institute includes optional participation in a Call for Scores. Interested composers are invited to submit works of 3 to 10 minutes by December 3, 2018, for review by Dr. Stephen Alltop and Dr. Stacy Garrop. Two to four works will be selected to be workshopped by the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra at the public reading session on February 23. Dr. Garrop served as Professor of Composition at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University from 2000 to STEPHEN ALLTOP CUSO Music Director & Conductor Stephen Alltop is Music Director and Conductor for CUSO and the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. He is also Music Director of Chicago s Apollo Chorus. Dr. Alltop serves on the conducting faculty of Northwestern University. RICARDO FLORES CUSO Principal, Percussion Ricardo Flores plays classical percussion, drum set, and world percussion in orchestral, chamber, jazz, pop, Latin, and other musical settings. He has served on the Percussion faculty of the University of Illinois School of Music since WILLIAM MOERSCH CUSO Principal, Timpani Internationally renowned as a marimba virtuoso, and chamber and symphonic percussionist, William Moersch is Professor and Chair of Percussion Studies at the University of Illinois. MOLLY MADDEN CUSO Principal, Harp Professional harpist Molly Madden performs with several regional orchestras and is Principal Harp for both CUSO and Heartland Festival Orchestra. She is a dedicated music educator and maintains a private harp studio.

2 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND NEW MUSIC USA REGISTRATION DEADLINE: January 28, 2019, 5:00 pm In partnership with New Music USA and Music Alive to promote the creation and performance of new music and the mentoring of composers, the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra will host a two-day Composers Institute on February 22 & 23, CUSO Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop and Music Alive Composer-in-Residence Stacy Garrop invite college-level composing students and recently graduated composers who live within a 200-mile radius of Champaign-Urbana to participate. ELIGIBILITY/REGISTRATION The Music Alive Composers Institute is open to students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (composition or performance students who compose), or composers who have graduated from such a program within the past two years, who are residents of Champaign- Urbana and the region that spans a 200-mile radius of Champaign, Illinois. The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra is the professional orchestra in residence at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Led by Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, CUSO is celebrating its 59th season. The CUSO Music Alive Composers Institute with composer Dr. Stacy Garrop is made possible through Music Alive, a residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA. Major funding for Music Alive comes from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The Amphion Foundation, The ASCAP Foundation Bart Howard Fund, the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. There is no fee to attend, nor any qualifi cation or adjudication process for composers. To register, complete the CUSO Composers Institute Registration Form included in this packet. Registrations must be received by 5:00 pm on Monday, January 28, Enrollment is limited to a total of forty students for each day. Composers who register for both days will be given priority on a fi rstcome, fi rst-served basis. One-day registrations will then be accepted for any available spaces and processed in registration date order. EDUCATIONAL GOALS The goal of the Composers Institute is to give college-level composers and recent graduates the skill sets and information needed to prepare for a professional composing career. Dr. Stacy Garrop, a nationally recognized composer and educator, will lead workshops on music business basics for composers, how to craft a multipronged online professional presence, and strategies for composing and dealing with writer s block. Additional sessions will include a seminar with both Dr. Alltop and Dr. Garrop discussing how to navigate the relationship between conductors and composers, and in-depth workshops with CUSO harp and percussion Principals on composing effectively for their instruments within an orchestral setting. CALL FOR SCORES AND READING SESSION The Institute also includes optional participation in a Call for Scores. Interested composers are invited to submit works of 3 10 minutes by December 3, 2018, for review by Dr. Stephen Alltop and Dr. Stacy Garrop. All Institute participants are expected to attend the reading session and the public will be invited to attend to learn more about the creative process of composing. STACY GARROP CRAFT YOUR CAREER WORKSHOP SERIES 1:00 2:00 PM Strategies for Composing In this session, Dr. Garrop will give students of all degree levels techniques to help develop their composing skills, generate musical ideas, and learn methods for dealing with writer s block. 2:30 3:30 PM Maximizing Your Digital Presence Dr. Garrop will cover the basics of using digital media: building a website that will suit your unique musical career; creating newsletters to keep people informed of your activities; building an effective social media presence; and how to use crowd-funding to support your projects. 4:00 5:30 PM Business Basics for Composers In this session, Dr. Garrop will cover a variety of topics, including selfpromotion, publishing vs. self-publishing, copyright, public domain and securing permissions; royalties and mechanical licensing; fi nding opportunities; cold-call campaigns; writing an effective biography; and the components of a commission contract. CUSO COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE, STACY GARROP The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra is honored to collaborate with composer Stacy Garrop. Stacy s residency is made possible through Music Alive, a residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA that demonstrates the power and value of living composers working at the center of American orchestras. Stacy Garrop is a nationally recognized composer of works for orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, chamber ensembles, and oratorio. Recent commissions include works for the Kronos Quartet and Carnegie Hall, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and the Barlow Prize. She has been named the Vanguard Initiative s Emerging Opera Composer for a twoyear residency with the Chicago Opera Theater. Stacy s works have been performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Albany Symphony, Grant Park Music Festival Orchestra and Chorus, Cabrillo Music Festival Orchestra, Chanticleer, Lincoln Trio, Gaudete Brass Quintet, and The President s Own U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra. She has earned numerous grants and awards, including a Fromm Music Foundation Grant, three Barlow Endowment commissions, Detroit Symphony Orchestra s Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award, Boston Choral Ensemble Commission Competition, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble s Harvey Gaul Composition Competition, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Music Composition Prize, and competitions sponsored by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, and the New England Philharmonic. Dr. Garrop has worked as an educator throughout her career, serving as professor of composition at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University from She also taught at Fresh Inc Festival from Stacy earned degrees in music composition at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (BM), University of Chicago (MA), and Indiana University-Bloomington (DM). Stacy Garrop is a Cedille Records recording artist, and her works are published by Theodore Presser Company. 4 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND NEW MUSIC USA SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23 MOLLY MADDEN STACY GARROP STEPHEN ALLTOP CUSO WORKSHOPS AND READING SESSION 10:00 11:00 AM Orchestral Writing for the Harp CUSO Principal Harpist Molly Madden will demonstrate the effective use of the harp in an orchestral setting and discusses notation issues that composers frequently encounter. Professional harpist Molly Madden performs with several regional orchestras and is Principal Harp for both CUSO and Heartland Festival Orchestra. She is a dedicated music educator and maintains a private harp studio. 11:30 AM 12:30 PM LUNCH & DISCUSSION Navigating the Conductor/Composer Relationship Dr. Alltop and Dr. Garrop will host a talk on navigating the conductor/composer relationship, including how to approach a conductor with new music, how to communicate before and during rehearsals, and what conductors are looking for when perusing a new work by an unfamiliar composer. Lunch is provided free for all participants. 1:00 3:30 PM Reading Session with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra Dr. Alltop and CUSO will workshop 2 4 selected pieces by applicants in a Reading Session that will be open to the public. Dr. Alltop and Dr. Garrop will give feedback to the composers during the session. There will be a question and answer session for the audience to speak with composers, Dr. Alltop, and Dr. Garrop. Stephen Alltop has extensive experience conducting both orchestral and choral ensembles. In his sixth season as Music Director and Conductor for CUSO, he is also Music Director and Conductor for the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of Chicago s Apollo Chorus. Dr. Alltop serves on the conducting faculty of Northwestern University. Interested composers are invited to submit works of 3 to 10 minutes by December 3, 2018, for review by Dr. Stephen Alltop and Dr. Stacy Garrop. Two to four works will be selected to be workshopped by the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra at the Reading Session on February 23, which will be open to the public. Dr. Alltop and Dr. Garrop will give feedback to the composers during the session. There will also be a question and answer session with the audience, composers, Dr. Alltop, and Dr. Garrop, in which the audience can ask about the process they are observing. January 6 10, 2019: Each of the selected composers will have a one-hour consulting session (by Skype) with Dr. Garrop on score and parts preparation. January 28, 2019, 5:00 pm: Deadline for selected composers to submit a PDF of one set of single parts to the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. CUSO will make the duplications of the string parts. January 28, 2019, 5:00 pm: Deadline for Registrations for Composers Institute. February 22, 2019,1:00 5:30 pm: Composers Institute, Day 1 Craft Your Career Workshop Series with Dr. Stacy Garrop. February 23, 2019,10:00 am 5:00 pm: Composers Institute, Day 2 Workshops and Orchestra Reading Session. ENTRY GUIDELINES The piece must have a duration of 3 10 minutes. Pieces with a longer duration will not be considered. Mark the duration of your piece at the top of the fi rst page. The instrumentation may not exceed 2 fl utes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, and 2 bassoons (with a maximum of 2 auxiliary instruments); 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, and 1 tuba; 3 percussionists; 1 timpanist; harp; and strings (10 fi rst violins, 8 second violins, 7 violas, 6 cellos, 4 double basses). Pieces that are scored for smaller forces are fi ne; pieces that are scored for larger forces than this will not be considered. There may be ONE entry per composer. Entries must be submitted electronically; paper submissions will not be accepted. Your entry must include your full score, saved in PDF format, and a completed entry application.
