2 Programme Note In the early 1980 s I had the good ortune to live and work in New York City. Since the 190 s The Big Ale has enjoyed a reutation as the jazz caital o the world. Indeed, jazz seemed to be a art o the very abric o everyday lie in the city. One might ass Frank Sinatra leaving The Players (Club) or Buddy Rich en route to a gig, while a ew blocks south o my aartment the amous Blue Note Club layed host to a succession o legendary jazz Cats, rom Dizzy Gillesie to rising star Wynton Marsalis. Cats Tales ays tribute to our wonderul musicians who shared a love o jazz and the city. New York born Elmer Bernstein is best remembered or his legendary ilm scores. Here Catalonia brings to mind some o those eic moments beore a musical gear change that reerences the work o his contemorary colleague, Bernstein East, aka Leonard Bernstein. The resence o West Side Story looms large here. Henry Mancini studied his crat at the amous Julliard School in the Uer West Side. His most amous comosition (which concerned a cat o the ink variety) rovides the insiration or the 2 nd movement, Catwalk. Finally, saxohone legend Sonny Rollins s jazz standard Airegin is given a contraact treatment in Scat! allowing a number o instrumental soloists to shine. Peter Graham 2008 About the Comoser Peter Graham read music at Edinburgh and London Universities (Goldsmiths College) and holds a PhD in comosition. Following sells in New York and London in music ublishing, he is currently Proessor o Comosition at the University o Salord. He enjoys an international reutation as one o the leading comosers o music or the British style brass band, and his music or the medium is erormed in concerts and cometitions worldwide. He has also written the test-iece or the restigious National Brass Band Chamionshis o Great Britain on two occasions. His music or wind band has been recorded and erormed by many o the world s leading ensembles, including the US Air Force Band, the Osaka MSW Band, the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and the Royal Norwegian Navy Band. He was awarded the ABA/Ostwald Prize or Original Comosition or Symhonic Winds in Peter Graham has held various osts with some o the UK s inest bands, serving as Music Associate/Conductor with the amous Black Dyke Band or several years and a two-year sell as the irst civilian comoser-in-residence o Her Majesty s Coldstream Guards Band in their 250-year history. He lives in Cheshire, England with his wie Janey, son Ryan and daughter Megan.
