1 MUSIC LESSONS at The Ward Center for the Arts August 2017 Dear Parents, Welcome to the Music Lessons Program at The St. Paul s Schools. These private lessons are offered weekly in The Ward Center by instructors who hold music degrees from conservatories and universities around the country. Lessons are available for cello, clarinet, drums, flute, guitar, piano, saxophone, violin, and voice. Enclosed is the Music Lessons Registration form for This information is also available on the schools websites. Please contact the Ward Center for pro- rated options for lessons that align with the calendar for the athletic trimester. At this time it is possible to register for the fall session of Music Lessons. Registration can be paid by check or, new this year, by credit card at Registration forms must be accompanied by a check made payable to the Ward Center or proof of credit card payment to be considered. Returning music lessons students have until Wednesday, August 30, 2017 to return their registration, and keep their teacher, day, and time from last semester. Placement of students new to the Music Lessons Program in open slots will begin on Thursday, August 31, Transportation is available from the Lower School to The Ward Center Monday through Friday for a fee. Lower School students may only sign up for a 3:30 time slot if they use our transportation service. Lower School transport students who have lessons after 4:30 p.m. need to enroll in ESP until they are picked up 15 minutes before their lesson. Middle and Upper School students do not require transportation to the Ward Center. Aug. 30 Fri. Jan. 5 Fri. June 1 Session Begins Thurs. Sept 7 Tues. Jan. 16 Mon. June 11 Trial Period Ends Fri. Sept. 22 Mon. Jan. 29 Fri. June 22 Session Ends Fri. Jan. 12 Fri. June 8 Fri. July 20 Lessons meet weekly and are available in blocks of 30 for Sessions 1 and 2 combined, 15 for Session 1 or Session 2, and a block of 6 for Session 3. Contact the Ward Center for pro- rated options for lessons that align with the calendar for the athletic trimester. There must be a registration form on file for each student during the session for which he or she is enrolled in music lessons. Fees for each session must be paid in full before the first lesson. Payment options are check or credit card at There is a trial period of two weeks at the beginning of each session. Those who do not wish to continue lessons must notify The Ward Center during the trial period to be refunded the balance of the lesson fee. After the trial period, payment for the session is non- refundable. Parents who register for 30 lessons are entitled to the trial period for Session 1 and Session 2. Lessons canceled by the instructor will be made up. Lessons missed by students can only be re- scheduled at the discretion of the instructor. Please notify the instructor by 8:00 a.m. the morning of the lesson. Transportation from the Lower School to the Ward Center is available Monday through Friday for a fee. Lower School students may only schedule a 3:30 lesson if they use our transportation service. Florida State University; Certificat d Aptitudes de Langues, Universite de Paris IV, La Sorbonne Tracey is an accomplished classical musician, performing in symphony orchestras, opera orchestras, and as a chamber and recording musician in the Baltimore/Washington and surrounding areas since She started her career in Paris, France, where she spent five years performing with a number of symphony orchestras, as well as with the Quatour International de Paris. She has been teaching privately since Tuesday 3:00-5:30 p.m. RUTHIE A. CARVER FLUTE The Leeds College of Music; AGSM The Guildhall School of Music and Drama; LRAM The Royal Academy of Music, London, England Ms. Carver has taught flute alongside classroom teaching for over 30 years. She plays professionally in chamber ensembles both here and abroad. Thursday 3:30-6:00 p.m. JOHN FICKLIN - PIANO B.M. Florida State University; M.M. Peabody Conservatory While earning his Bachelor of Music and Philosophy, John Ficklin studied with Carlisle Floyd at Florida State University. He earned his Master of Music with honors in performance while studying with Ellen Mack at the Peabody Conservatory. In addition to teaching at the St. Paul s Schools, Mr. Ficklin is an instructor at Towson University Preparatory. Monday 3:00-6:00 p.m.; Thursday 3:00-7:00 p.m.; Friday 3:00-5:30 p.m. HEATHER FLOWER- ROGERS VOICE B.A. St. Mary s College; M.A. University of Colorado Ms. Flower- Rogers completed six years of Kodály training with Betty Bertaux while singing with the Children s Chorus of Maryland. She is currently the Director of Youth Choirs at the Grace United Methodist Church in Baltimore, and is the Middle School Choral Director at St. Paul s School for Girls. Monday Friday during the school day and after school. Saturday morning. CARL GRUBBS - CLARINET, SAXOPHONE, MUSIC PRODUCTION AND COMPOSITION WITH COMPUTER Carl Grubbs studied as an apprentice to the late John Coltrane and is currently the director of the St. Paul s Jazz Bands. In spring 2009, Carl was the recipient of the first Mary Sawyers Baker Artist Award. He currently serves as an adjudicator for the Maryland State Scholarship Committee. In addition to teaching saxophone and clarinet at the St. Paul s School, Mr. Grubbs teaches a course in jazz improvisation. TBD 3:15 6:00 p.m. MARK DEMULL PERCUSSION B.M. Alma College; M.M. Michigan State University; G.P.D. Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University Mark DeMull is originally from Michigan, where he completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in percussion performance. From , he remained in- state and taught percussion at Alma College and Saginaw Valley State University. He is a diverse musician whose specialities include solo and chamber music, orchestral percussion and timpani, world music, marching percussion, and jazz. Mark currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland, where he is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Baltimore and a doctoral student at the Peabody Conservatory. Monday 3:00-7:00 p.m.
5 BEAU LOCHTE PIANO B.M. Towson University; Music Composition Beau Lochte has more than ten years of experience teaching students to read, understand, and enjoy playing piano. He encourages collaborations with other instruments, arranges music for performance, and guides students in composing original pieces including using synthesizer and multi- track recording. Beau directs the Handbell Choir at Second Presbyterian Church and is the Artistic Director and founder of Charm City Bronze Handbell Ensemble. Beau s range of musical compositions include pieces for orchestra, voice, concert band, brass quintet, percussion, organ, piano, doorbells, and birdsong. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3:00 6:30 p.m. Times also available during the school day. _ ANETA OTREBA CELLO and VIOLIN B.M. Towson University; M.M. Towson University; D.M.A. University of Maryland Aneta Otreba received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a member of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and has performed with such orchestras as the Concert Artists of Baltimore, Washington Summer Opera, and the New World Symphony Orchestra in Florida. She is the winner of the Baltimore Music Club Competition and the Towson University Liberman Music Competition. Dr. Otreba is currently on the faculty of the Baltimore String Orchestra Camp and is the string group teacher at the String Academy at Notre Dame Preparatory School. Thursday 4:00 7:00 p.m. _ MARLENE RUA PASTERNACK PIANO B. M. Ithaca College; M.M. New England Conservatory Marlene received her Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College in Piano Performance and Music Education and her Master of Music in Musicology from the New England Conservatory of Music. For thirteen years, Marlene served as Director of Applied Music, Chair of the Music and Performing Arts Departments, Choral Director, and Teacher of Music at Garrison Forest School. Before moving to Baltimore, Marlene was Head of the Fine Arts Department at the Winsor School in Boston, where she taught music for fifteen years. Marlene frequently performs as a vocal soloist, piano soloist, collaborative pianist, liturgical musician, and choral conductor. She currently teaches private lessons in piano to students of all ages and levels. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 3:30-6:00 p.m. _ MOLLY SCHAEREN PIANO B.A. Connecticut College; T.D Cercle Lémanique d Etudes Musicales; M.M. Towson University Molly Schaeren studied in Switzerland with pianist Edith Fischer where she completed a post- graduate Pedagogy Degree in Piano. For 20 years, she taught music at the International School of Lausanne to pre- k through eighth grade students. Since returning to the United States, Mrs. Schaeren has taught general music and piano in the Baltimore area. Tuesday 3:00 5:30 p.m. _ DAVID VERGAUWEN GUITAR B.M. Towson University David Vergauwen has performed and taught in the Baltimore area for the past 19 years. His performance credits include Dona Fancisquita at the Kennedy Center and Evita with the Maryland Arts Festival. Mr. Vergauwen is currently a freelance guitarist and producer.
