A chamber music work or one or more movements from a concerto II Examination board assessment on a scale of 0 to 5 Accordion performance C (for students whose main subject is not the Accordion) S-t3a-5134 Accordion performance A A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of the instrument technique required for demanding concert repertoire - be familiar with a range of core repertoire sufficient for independent artistic work - be widely conversant with the various styles of music for the accordion and how they are interpreted - be familiar with contemporary music for the accordion in particular - be able to use the various performing techniques usable on the accordion - be capable of original artistic expression and have a command of large-scale musical forms - have the capability for independent improvement of his/her artistic skills and for undertaking further studies. Repertoire must be rehearsed to a sufficient and diverse extent. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire (about 30 min) to an examination board appointed by the university every academic year II Level A master s recital: The programme performed at the level performance examination must be a sufficiently demanding recital programme. S-t3a Kantele performance A2 Project and concise art music programme (Master of Music) A student who has completed the module is expected to: - have the capability for independent artistic work - have the capability to complete the level A examination included in the Master of Music degree - have a command of instrument technique to a standard required for the repertoire - have a command of the principal styles of music for the instrument - have agreed on annual goals with his/her teacher - have the capability to pursue further studies. The unit includes performing each academic year. Basic repertoire must be rehearsed to a sufficient and diverse extent, drawing on repertoire list 1. It is recommended to include 5 6 works from category 1 and 3 4 works each from categories 2 to 4 (at least one work from each). The student may select one of various approaches for this artistic project, such as chamber music, early music, folk music, jazz or popular music, or a collaboration with a student from another branch of the arts (e.g. Theatre Academy; School of Arts, Design and Architecture; Academy of Fine Arts). The student must write a thoroughly motivated project plan for approval by the coordinating teacher or subject collegium and by the head of the department. The project must include supporting elective studies. Folk music and jazz/popular music approaches and inter-art projects may include composing, arranging and/or improvisation. The chamber music approach requires participation in 1 or 2 chamber music periods or a masterclass. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year 10

11 II Level A2 master s recital: a) a programme lasting 30 to 40 min based on repertoire list 1 b) project performance lasting 40 to 45 min The student may complete parts a) and b) of the recital on different days if there is a weighty reason for needing to do so. Examination board assessment, For the project part, an examination board with expertise in the genre of music in question will be appointed. For students whose main subject is a classical music instrument: All other studies included in the student s individual study plan. For students with other main subjects: Kantele performance B or equivalent at the Sibelius Academy. Credited substituting studies There are no substitutions for this unit. Guitar S-t3b-5151 Guitar performance B A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of the principal styles of music for the guitar and the instrument technique and artistic interpretative capability required for them - have a command of musical forms and of sound production and touch on the guitar - have the capability to progress to Guitar performance A. Rehearsing repertoire from repertoire list 2, at least three times the amount required for the performance examination. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year The annual performance must have a duration of 20 to 30 min. Also, during this unit the student must plan and execute one public performance with a duration of about 45 min that is an original programme conceived by himself/herself. The annual performance is not required in the academic year in which this performance is executed. II Level B bachelor s recital: a e) 5 works from categories 1 to 6, from at least four categories f) 1 work from category 7 The repertoire must be performed from memory; an exception may be made in the case of the contemporary work on a case-by-case basis. In special cases, other repertoire may be played from the score if so agreed with the coordinating teacher. The duration of the programme must be no less than 40 min and no more than 60 min. The repertoire performed at the level performance examination must be sufficiently demanding and diverse as a whole. In unclear cases, it is recommended that the student discuss the programme with the coordinating teacher well in advance. II Examination board assessment on a scale of 0 to 5 11

12 S-t3a Guitar performance A1 A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of the instrument technique required for demanding concert repertoire - be familiar with a range of core repertoire sufficient for independent artistic work - be widely conversant with various musical styles and how they are interpreted - be familiar with contemporary guitar music - be capable of original artistic expression and have a command of large-scale musical forms - have the capability for independent improvement of his/her artistic skills and for undertaking further studies. Rehearsing repertoire in repertoire list 1 at least as follows, including the works in the performance examination: (however, only one concerto need be rehearsed) a) 9 works from categories 1 to 6, representing different stylistic periods b) 3 works from category 7 c) 1 work from category 8 I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year The annual performance must have a duration of about 30 min. Also, during this unit the student must plan and execute one public performance with a duration of about 60 min that is an original programme conceived by himself/herself. The annual performance is not required in the academic year in which this performance is executed. II Level A1 master s recital: a c) 3 works from categories 1 to 6, representing different stylistic periods d) 1 work from category 7 e) 1 work from category 8 Any of the above works may be replaced with a chamber music work if so agreed with the coordinating teacher or the chairman / deputy chairman of the examination board. The programme performed at the level performance examination must be a sufficiently demanding recital programme. In unclear cases, it is recommended that the student discuss the programme with the coordinating teacher well in advance. The recital must comprise at least 60 min of music. The programme must be played from memory except for the contemporary work and, on a case-by-case basis, the eventual chamber music work. In special cases, other repertoire may be played from the score if so agreed with the coordinating teacher. II Examination board assessment, For students whose main subject is the Guitar: All other studies included in the student s individual study plan. For students with other main subjects: Guitar performance B or equivalent at the Sibelius Academy. S-t3a Guitar performance A2 A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of the instrument technique required for demanding concert repertoire - be familiar with a range of core repertoire sufficient for independent artistic work - be widely conversant with various musical styles and how they are interpreted - be familiar with contemporary guitar music 12

13 - be capable of original artistic expression and have a command of large-scale musical forms - have the capability for independent improvement of his/her artistic skills and for undertaking further studies. The student is expected to develop his/her personal musicianship and creative artistic expression within the framework of his/her chosen approach. The student may choose from a variety of approaches, such as: a) an individual period such as Classical or contemporary, or a style within a period, such as one of the various styles of contemporary music b) chamber music c) an inter-art project involving literature, dance, visual arts, etc., or a project based on a unifying theme For option c), the student must write a thoroughly motivated project plan for approval by the coordinating teacher or subject collegium and by the head of the department. The project must include sufficient instrument studies, supporting elective studies and a programme text. The chamber music approach requires participation in 1 or 2 chamber music periods or a masterclass. Period-specific approaches require appropriate supporting studies. A2, option a I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year The annual performance must have a duration of about 30 min. II Level A2 master s recital: Freely chosen programme consistent with level A in terms of artistic content and technical demands. The recital must comprise at least 60 min of music. 14 Piano S-t1s-5131 Piano performance, secondary instrument For students whose main subject is Composition or Music Theory; students with other main subjects also allowed, except for Music Education. A student who completes this unit is expected to: - be familiar with music for the piano - have experience of playing polyphonic music and sight-reading - have the capability to progress to further studies. I Rehearsing repertoire II Performance examination: a) 1 work from the Baroque period or from Bartók s Mikrokosmos b) a fast and a slow movement from a Viennese Classical sonata or sonatina, or similar selection c) 2 freely chosen works in different styles At least one of the works must be performed from memory. The teacher and one colleague assess the unit on a scale of 0 to 5. S-t03d-5131 Piano performance D A student who has completed the module is expected to: - be familiar with various styles of music for the piano and with the instrument technique and interpretation required for them - have the capability to progress to further studies. The unit includes rehearsing repertoire diversely at least at the music institute level (see the relevant SML repertoire list). I Rehearsing repertoire II Performance examination: a) 1 work from the Baroque period b) a fast and a slow movement from a sonata or sonatina from the Viennese Classical period (including Bach s sons and Schubert), or a similar selection c) 3 freely chosen works representing different styles Any of the works under a c above may be replaced with an ensemble number. e) sight-reading At least one of the solo works must be performed from memory. II Examination board assessment on a scale of 0 to 5 S-t03c Piano performance C1 (Students whose main subject is Music Education or Church Music; other main subjects also allowed) A student who has completed the module is expected to: 14

15 - be familiar with the principal styles of piano playing (Baroque, Viennese Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, 20th-century mainstream styles and contemporary piano music) and how they are interpreted and have a command of the instrument technique required for the repertoire - have the capability to progress to further studies - have the sight-reading skills and ensemble skills required for his/her career. I Rehearsing repertoire to a sufficiently broad and diverse extent, principally based on repertoire list 3 II Performance examination including the following: a) Baroque music (three movements from a Baroque suite, a Prelude and Fugue from J.S. Bach s WKL, two 3-part inventions, or a similar selection) b) a Viennese Classical work (including Schubert) c) two Romantic or newer works in different styles (categories 4, 5 and 6 in the repertoire list) d) ensemble number (no arrangements) or chamber music Department of Composition and Music Theory: e) a work written in the past 50 years All departments: f) sight-reading The programme must include one extensive work such as a sonata. This may be any of the works required under points a e above. Some of the programme may be performed on a period instrument (but not on the organ). At least one of the works must be performed from memory. The sight-reading part (f) may be completed as a separate course. II Examination board assessment on a scale of 0 to 5 Recommended year of completion 3 S-t03c Piano performance C2 (for students whose main subject is not Piano) A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of various musical styles and the interpretation and instrument technique they require - have the capability to pursue further studies. Repertoire must be rehearsed to a sufficient and diverse extent, drawing on repertoire list 3. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire to an examination board appointed by the university every academic year as required II Performance examination: a) an etude b) J.S. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire to an examination board appointed by the university every academic year as required II Level B bachelor s recital: Repertoire planning should be based on repertoire list 2. The repertoire performed at the level performance examination must be sufficiently demanding and diverse as a whole. In unclear cases, it is recommended that the student discuss the programme with the coordinating teacher well in advance. Repertoire must be rehearsed to a sufficient and diverse extent, drawing on repertoire list 1. This unit may also be completed with a chamber music focus. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire to an examination board appointed by the university every academic year as required II Level A master s recital: Repertoire planning should be based on repertoire list 1. S-t3a Fortepiano performance A2 A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have the capability for independent artistic work with piano music from the 18th and 19th centuries - have gained further experience in playing early pianos of various kinds. Rehearsing repertoire: four etudes from the period , four etudes from the period (from at least 5 composers), one sonata and/or set of variations by Haydn and one by Mozart, one sonata by Beethoven and one sonata by Schubert or other extensive work (which is not by Beethoven or Schubert), one Classical and one Romantic concerto, three Classical and three Romantic freely chosen works. Level A2 master s recital: a programme about 90 min long on 1 or 2 instruments. The programme must be varied and must include two short virtuoso works, a 5-minute fantasy by the student, one extensive sonata or other work, one previously unpublished work sourced by the student himself/herself, a concerto or similar work or alternatively a chamber music programme of about 30 minutes, or a combination of these. The works for the portfolio may be performed at woodwind matinees, class concerts or other public concerts at the Sibelius Academy or elsewhere. These performances must always be attended by a woodwind instrument teacher from the Sibelius Academy (other than the student s own teacher) or a member of the woodwind level performance examination board, who will give a brief written feedback. The student must compile the portfolio independently, as agreed with his/her own instrument teacher beginning in his/her first year of study. The portfolio must always include a record of the time and place of performance, the work performed and the other performers. The feedback received must also be entered in the portfolio. The portfolio must be created using a pre-defined template in electronic form. The portfolio must include at least ten works from various stylistic periods, including contemporary music. The portfolio must include extensive works such as a sonata, concerto or suite. Core repertoire for the instrument must be included. The portfolio may include solo works and works for small chamber ensemble where the student s instrument plays a prominent role. The recital may include elements from other branches of the arts. : BRASS S-t3d- Brass performance D This level performance examination is mainly intended for students in Music Education and the Junior Department and for students with a brass instrument as a secondary instrument. No credits are awarded for completion. : I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year as agreed with the teacher. II Etude, scales, arpeggios and sight-reading The etude, scales, arpeggios and sight-reading are to be performed on a separate informal occasion. Scales and arpeggios are to be rehearsed as instructed by the student s own teacher.
