3 Artistic Director Welcome This year we take you to the USA to celebrate the birthplace of the music we love. Every month WAYJO will transport you to a different city in America to showcase the music that has made it famous; from New York to New Orleans, Las Vegas to Hollywood, Chicago to Detroit. Each of these great cities have contributed a musical style that has influenced modern music and created some of the greatest moments in modern music history. We are very excited to welcome two very special guests to Perth from New York City, saxophonist Dick Oatts and trombonist Mariel Bildsten, to perform especially with WAYJO as part of our American Jazz Story. Dick Oatts is big band jazz royalty, holding the position of lead alto player for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra since 1977 and has one of the most powerful and distinct alto saxophone sounds in jazz. He will be bringing the sound and energy of New York City to Downstairs at The Maj, transforming that room into The Village Vanguard. Mariel Bildsten is a rising star in New York, playing in many of the city s big bands, including the Evan Sherman Big Band, and is part of one of my favourite brass bands, Brass Against the Machine. She has a real respect for the history of jazz and will be bringing her expertise to us for our New Orleans night. We are so excited to bring you this program in 2019 with our three exceptional bands filled with immensely talented young musicians. I look forward to seeing you at one of our many performances. Dr Mace Francis - WAYJO Artistic Director

4 An American Jazz Story In the early 20th century a brand new artform evolved from a melting pot of ragtime, blues and creole culture, creating a new sound: jazz. In 2019 WAYJO celebrates America s original artform, constantly evolving and influencing other styles of music. From concerts featuring some great jazz vocalists to styles derived from the great jazz cities of the USA, every concert in our season will bring WAYJO s energetic take on the sounds of the big band with freshness and panache. Join us all year long as we present An American Jazz Story. Photo: Justine Thornley Mariel Bildsten and Dick Oatts appear thanks to funding provided by the United States Government. 4

5 The Great American Songbook WAYJO kicks off 2019 with a toe tapping, joyous concert featuring the songs from The Great American Songbook. After the sell-out shows Ladies Sing the Blues in 2018, the WAYJO vocalists will bring their talents to tunes made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Billie Holliday, as composed by Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Berlin, Porter and more. The Great American Songbook will be the perfect introduction to the 2019 program, so bring your family and friends along to what will be the first hit show of the year. 6 Dixieland Stomp: New Orleans featuring Mariel Bildsten (USA) WAYJO brings the birthplace of jazz together with the big band sound. Jazz made for dancing, stomping your feet and having a good time. That s what New Orleans jazz is all about. We welcome bandleader and trombonist Mariel Bildsten, direct from the USA, to play and lead the Monday Night Orchestra. Recently seen in Perth with the Evan Sherman Big Band (Perth Festival, 2017), Mariel brings her experience of playing with jazz greats including Wycliffe Gordon, Dee Dee Bridgewater and more to Downstairs at The Maj. The sound of New Orleans comes to Perth in May, so pack your dancing shoes and prepare to swing. 7 Vegas, Baby! The Rat Pack. Tom Jones. Elvis. Louis Prima. It s the swinging sounds of the ultra-lounge. Hipsters, mobsters, cool cats and brassy dames. WAYJO s annual Astor Theatre show is always a hit with audiences, and Vegas, Baby! will be the coolest night in town. Dress up in your finest, hop back in time a few decades, but not too far, and step out like a big spender. It s Vegas, Baby! VEGAS, BABY! Vegas, Baby! 8 Jazz with a Touch of Motown: Detroit Jazz and Motown were wedded from the beginning, Detroit acting as a hotbed of collaboration and invention in evolving musical styles. The famed Blue Bird Inn played home to jazz greats Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Elvin Jones while jazz instrumentalists played key roles in the development of the Motown sound. WAYJO brings all of these famed Detroit influences together across two incredible nights of soulful jazz, hip riffs, and cool funk. Whether it s uptempo brass or lyrical romance, Jazz with a Touch of Motown swings with familiar and new sounds all night long. 9 Central Park North: New York featuring Dick Oatts (USA) Dick Oatts, one of the modern great saxophonists, composers and bandleaders joins WAYJO straight from the home of jazz. A huge influence on countless artists, Oatts brings his recognisable sound to two very special concerts. Leading the sax section of the famed Vanguard Jazz Orchestra since 1978, Oatts has one of the most recognisable lead alto sounds in jazz history. And of course, as a resident of the Big Apple, Oatts will bring with him all of the very best that the city that never sleeps has to offer. From composers like Thad Jones to his own works, Dick Oatts will provide the highlight of the jazz year. Do not miss out on this concert, sure to be one of WAYJO s finest. 10 The Afro-Cuban Explosion: Miami/Cuba featuring Steve Richter, Iain Robbie & Adolfo Chavez (Aus) Hot hot hot. Feel the vibes of samba, bossa nova, and salsa as WAYJO turns the heat up with Afro-Cuban inspired jazz across two sensational nights. From Dizzy Gillespie s Manteca, a fan favourite at WAYJO gigs, to music by band leaders and percussionists extraordinaire like Tito Puente, the Afro-Cuban Allstars and Buena Vista Social Club, you will want to move your booty all night. Featuring guest artists Steve Richter and Iain Robbie, leading a percussion explosion, and Adolfo Chavez on vocals, these gigs are going to be party central. 11 Everybody Needs Somebody to Love: Chicago King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong. Just some of the artists who made their names in Chicago, a city synonymous with jazz, swing and blues. WAYJO brings together the jazz and blues tradition across these two concerts, featuring powerful soul, big band swing, and bass grooves both familiar and infectious. Who knows, we may even drop some tunes by a couple of brothers who were on a mission from God. 14 The Debut Collection Did you know that WAYJO members not only perform, they compose their own work? For a number of years, WAYJO have commissioned young composers to create big band compositions, performed by our Wednesday Night Orchestra. This tradition continues in 2019, when we present The Debut Collection, a night of original compositions from our Composer in Residence program. The Wednesday Night Orchestra will also revisit some of the commissions of previous years, allowing new jazz music to breathe again and the original composers to revisit some of the most exciting new big band work in the country. The music of Australia s great female composers and arrangers will envelop audiences and send them into the night with a new sense of wonder at the talent and dedication waiting to take centre stage. 23 WAYJO International Exchange Program Thanks to the support of some wonderful partners, WAYJO s international reputation is going from strength to strength. In 2019, our artists and staff will be visiting two countries and sharing cultural experiences with musicians from around the globe. WAYJO musicians and a Music Director will attend the Brubeck Institute in California, USA, thanks to the Geoffrey Christian Artist Exchange Fund. This is an invaluable experience for some of our younger artists to travel and work with peers from around the world in an intensive course. Supported by our Principal Partners North West Shelf Gas, we also welcome the staff and students of Showa University, Japan, for one week in Perth - and send six of our musicians to Kawasaki. This cultural exchange program has been run over the last five years, and has delivered many cultural benefits and life-long memories that have changed lives in both countries. WAYJO are always exploring the highest quality opportunities for our musicians to grow in their careers and experience what the world has to offer, and our thriving international exchange program is one of the best ways we can do this.
