2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission The New Haven Oratorio Choir is a strong community based organization committed to performances of high quality along with the warm and inviting character that distinguishes our concerts and that our audiences have come to expect. Our goal and focus is to provide the New Haven region with intimate choral music. We strive to provide our singers with opportunities to learn and grow musically, to inspire our audiences with superb performances of old and new music alike, and to educate our performers and the public in a repertoire of wellknown and lesser known works and even newly composed music. Background The New Haven Oratorio Choir began in 1963 as the Redeemer Oratorio Choir, affiliated with the Church of the Redeemer. In 1990, the choir incorporated separately as the New Haven Oratorio Choir (NHOC), so that it could more fully pursue concert performance and invite community participation. NHOC now performs secular pieces in addition to sacred choral works. NHOC has maintained a good relationship with the Church of the Redeemer and continues to rent rehearsal and performance space there, as well as occasionally collaborating with the church on music for their services. Over the past 50 years, NHOC has collaborated with many local performers and community organizations. We regularly recruit vocal soloists and instrumentalists from the musical groups at Yale and from the Hartt School. In the last several years, we have performed in collaboration with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Yale Symphony Orchestra, and the Elm City Girls Choir. In past seasons we performed with the Meetinghouse Chorale (a concert choir based in Milford) and we performed at the Pierpont Concert Series in North Haven. Impact 1. Performed the Faure Requiem with chamber orchestra in our December 2016 concert, an achievement we set our sights on five years ago.2. In December 2016, we also performed works by four living composers, including our own artistic director, Daniel Shaw.3. Ended the season with financial reserve to begin the new season with strong financial base. Goals for this year:1. Perform works with continuing diversity of accompanment including orchestra 2. Continue with the development a strategic plan for long term financial health of the organization.3. Increase audience participation by 50%. 4. Increase revenues from individual donors and grant makers.5. Perform a concert entirely by composers from the extreme northern countries of the northern hemisphere including the respective national anthems in the native languages including Norwegian, Finnish, and Estonian. Needs 1. Develop capacity to raise sufficient funds to meet our budget goals.2. Maintain or increase size of board to provide more volunteer support.3. Develop strategies to retain and attract larger audiences and more singers.4. Ensure long-term financial stability of the choir.5. Continue to develop the musical skills of each member and the ensemble. CEO Statement We are an all volunteer group and do not have a CEO 2
3 Board Chair Statement I have been a member of NHOC for 25 years and am currently serving my second non-consecutive term as Board President. My commitment to this choir is based on my belief that music, specifically choral music, has the power to bring together people from all walks of life to achieve a better understanding of each other and to develop a stronger commitment to work together for the greater good of the community.originally founded as The Redeemer Oratorio Choir as a community choir, the choir continued under the generous support of the Church of the Redeemer until the late 1980s when the choir became a self supporting community choir. The choir incorporated in 1990 as The New Haven Oratorio Choir, and established itself as a non-profit organization. All this was accomplished with the assistance of various volunteers and members of the Choir. The Choir continued to grow in its reputation for providing the greater New Haven community quality choral music and developed a reputation for period-style performance practices of the Baroque and Classical repertoire. Under the direction of Daniel Shaw, artistic director, the New Haven Oratorio Choir has broadened it's repertoire to include works by contemporary composers, including commissioning pieces for small choral ensembles. In we celebrated our 50th year of continuous seasons and are preparing for the 55th anniversary of the choir's inception in the season. This remarkable longevity due to the members of the Choir and our devoted supporters and donors who feel that NHOC offers something unique and special to the musical quality of New Haven. The New Haven Oratorio Choir is a membership run choir, with a board of directors that is charged with maintaining the fiscal and organization health of the organization. Our membership and our audience continues to grow, in part because we believe that music is a social experience between performers and audience; both entities are vital to each other. Our world consistently offers reasons for communities to be divided, yet, through music, the New Haven Oratorio Choir provides reasons to bring our community together, and that is why I am so passionate about being president of this organization. 4 Programs Programs Concert Season Description In December 2016 we performed a concert of works by living composers plus the Faure Requiem with chamber orchestra. Music included works by Andrew Batterham, Carl Schroeder, Daniel Shaw, and Jennifer Tibbetts. Professional musicians included, Sarah Comfort-Reed, Soprano; Jason Thoms, Baritone, John Abdenour, Organ, Alexis Zingale, piano. The orchestra was funded in part by a summer matching gift challenge. This concert was extremely well attended and was followed by our traditional reception with the audience participating in carol singing around the piano. In May 2017, NHOC will perform "Northern Lights" a concert featuring music by composers in territories where the northern lights are visible. Choral pieces are by lesser known composers, and composers that are enshrined in the international choral repertoire. We will recruit new singers and expand our membership. We will expand our outreach to the community by increasing presence in social media, local and national media. Audiences will hear and experience both familiar and less familiar choral compositions. Some of these works are rarely heard in the music community. In this way we will educate our audience and singing members and promote the appreciation of music which may not have been experienced in the past. We monitor and count audience members. We have set goals for outreach in social media, individual contributors, financial goals and sustainable membership. We continue to expand our audience and anticipate a greater number of ticket sales for our entire season. We have expanded our contacts by 75 people. We have added friends following our Facebook page to a total of
5 Summer Choral Singing Workshop Description In June of 2017 NHOC will sponsor the fourth annual Choral Singing Skills workshop which will be open to any choral singer interested in solidifying basic choral skills. It is a special opportunity to master fine points of choral singing without the pressure of preparing for a concert or performance. Topics will include traditional diction, improving sight reading by understanding meter and key, basic music theory to help learn scores faster and retain details more quickly and basic singing techniques. This workshop will be led by NHOC's Artistic Director Daniel Shaw. A small fee is charged to help cover the costs of printing music and other materials Budget $ Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other / Music Instruction Population Served General/Unspecified / / Program is linked to organization s mission and strategy Program Comments CEO Comments All our programs are musical performances and the budgets associated with them include the hiring of soloists, instrumentalists, recording fees and advertising.
