about Au Privave Formed over a decade ago, Au Privave (pronounced Oh, Prih, vahv) played several years for small audiences and then brought their wide assortment of jazz moods to a number of restaurants, having one regular engagement over two years at one particular place. Since 2002, they have shaped and polished their music to bring the best of jazz to private parties, business events and wedding affairs. And they have been quite successful there. Celebrants at both modest and very grand places, from family style taverns to Central Park s fabulous Tavern on the Green, have found a calm and lively energy in their music. In both repertoire and professionalism they produce a musical atmosphere that positively uplifts. Romantics feel more romantic, nervous guests feel more composed, distracted guests get more focussed, even moody types find their way to a better mood. If you could bottle a sound that said elegant, but not stuffy this is it. You might not know the words to the songs, but the story between the lines is this is conviviality at it s most meaningful, specialevent best. Au Privave is: acoustic bass (just nothing like a real bass) woodwinds (tenor sax, soprano sax, clarinet, yes, all them) keyboards or guitar drums (a special light-weight, intimate-sounding, set)
Musical Selection Au Privave develops it s musical sets from what s called straight-ahead jazz music. This means it takes melodic tunes, keeps them recognizable, but adds jazzy inventiveness to them. Most of the makeup of its sets, the individual performance periods with their thoughtful sequence of songs, comes from what are called standards songs, music that lives on and on because it can be performed in many different ways and still stay beautiful, smart, charming, memorable. No one compares these songs to the original record because they have no single original and best version. The songs have an individual strength that makes them both familiar and specially unique at the same time. With jazz professionals like Au Privave, that music can be adjusted on the spot to fit what s going on in the room. This is very different from a pop group performance in which you re listening to a song that s been practiced one way over and over and over; you d better like the way they re doing it because they can t change or adjust it to work with anything that s going on live in the room. Au Privave is truly sensitive to your party and can make sure, seamless and clever adjustments in the songs and their playing to keep the atmosphere at its best. The next page shows a small sampling of the styles and songs Au Privave can be called on to play.

(Irving Berlin) We are working on new material all the time. We invite your special requests. Some of them will require extra time for us to arrange, and will involve an additional fee, some won t. Just inquire as early as possible.
Preparing an Event It s not cash and go for Au Privave. Au Privave will do their best to help you get the optimal experience from their playing. Some preparatory things you might want to check for in planning your music are: How much total music time will be best for you. When should the band arrive (they always arrive early, but would you like a specific time)? Sets of music can run anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes long. Audiences (and musicians) like little breaks. Do you need specific music lengths or should the group just fill an hour? Are you thinking of an open-ended amount of time to have the musicians play say, an hour, but more if more playing fits at the moment? Where should musicians enter the hall or room? What kind of dress would you find most appropriate for them? Will they have access to one working electrical outlet? Do you foresee them needing to bring a PA and mikes for announcements and the like? What kind of parking is available for the band members? Are there any special songs that you would like to hear and check with the band to see if they can accomodate those particular songs? If you would like us to use an acoustic piano already in your event room, please have management fax us evidence that the piano is in tune (recent tuning bill, testimony of a recent musician). The best guarantee would be to have us check it a few days before the event. This can be accomplished for a small fee. If your event encompasses a meal time, how should the band take care of it s own meals? Would they be able to find food nearby, or would they be accomodated by the service at your own event? Do you have good directions to your event? Would there be a contact person at the event to tell the musicians where to set up and the like? Are there any special issues or sensitivities the musicians should be aware of?
Booking an Event We hope we can serve up the bouncy, cool, happy atmosphere we do best, just for you. If you ve decided from our demo and materials and talking with us that we d be right for your event, then please let us know at your earliest convenience that you want a particular date. You re event is booked and the date is dedicated to you, and you alone, upon our receipt of half the cost of the performance you want. You will receive an itemized bill and contract for what you want. Several simple factors form the pricing of your particular performance, all common sense, these are just reminders: * Length of time playing. For any event, we are dedicating a half day of our time in total. In the same way that you have spent more time in setting up your event than the actual event will last, we too have set aside a good amount of time to be fully prepared for a totally professional, smooth-flowing performance. An hour of music still entails all preparation and travel time and expense that two or three hours of music would take. So, think of it this way. The first hour is the expensive one, all subsequent hours come at a lesser and lesser rate. * Special requests (many average ones will not result in an extra charge, so ask) * Travel and parking To be fair, we won t average out costs of travel and parking so that one engagement with low costs pays for one with high costs. Our group is centered in metro Long Island and just about all travel is done by car. With today s gas prices, a modest charge of $10 per band member is charged within a 25 mile radius from Garden City, Long Island. Any roadway tolls encountered must also be accomodated at cost. Pricing for greater distances is listed on the next page. Likewise, with parking, please verify and let us know of the least expensive suitable parking available. In some situations, where a only garage parking is available, we need to be fair and receive the cost of that parking. Parking must be in a reasonable distance from your event because it s not easy to hike with the equipment and instruments we re bringing.
