The Minstrel offers to put our performers up overnight on Fridays after the show in members' homes. And we are looking for additional people willing to provide that service. If you think it might be fun to take a musician home for the night, we'd like to add you to our list of potential hosts. We're looking for people with the following facilities: At least one guest room, and the capacity to host at least one person overnight, but the more you can serve, the better, The closer you live to the Minstrel, the better, but depending upon performers' travel plans the following day, as much as minutes drive from the Minstrel might work, You don't have to actually be at the Minstrel the night you are hosting, so long as there will be someone to receive the performers when they arrive after the show. (Of course, it's better if you're at the show to meet them, introduce yourself, and lead them home.) Things like pets, noise, early-rising children in the house, and other factors that distinguish you from a motel can be dealt with (or not) as long as everyone knows what they're getting into. 2 May 2014 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 5/2: OCEAN Celtic with Millstone River Morris OCEAN Celtic emerges phoenix-like from the ashes of the fabled New St. George with two of that band s key members, Jennifer Cutting (accordion, piano) and Lisa Moscatiello (vocals, guitar). To this, they ve added Andrew Dodds (fiddle) and Stephen Winick (vocals, percussion). Cutting is Washington Area Music Association s Musician of the Year, and Moscatiello s voice has been hailed by Billboard as one of the most gorgeous vocal instruments in all of folk-tinged pop. All are serious scholars of British Isles folk music, but bring it to life with innovation and joy that is anything but academic. Opener Millstone River Morris is a Morris Dance troupe from Princeton. Morris Dancing is a form of traditional dance from England. Originally done as a seasonal ritual to usher in the Spring and good crops, it has been revived over the past 50 years as a ritual unto itself. The dancing is done in colorful costumes, often with props such as cudgels, swords, or cloth hankies. It is lusty, energetic, raucous, and wonderfully entertaining. Fri., 5/9: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. For information on how to secure a performance slot, call , or visit org/minstrel/openstage. Fri., 5/16: Zoe Mulford with Brad Yoder Minstrel regulars were introduced to Singer-songwriter Zoe Mulford in January when she opened for Tom Chapin. Zoe plants one foot on either shore of the Atlantic, with homes in Pennsylvania and Manchester, England. She tackles the big eternal themes love, death, food, laundry, etc. with wit and honesty. Backing her clear vocals with guitar or clawhammer banjo, she serves up well-told stories seasoned with everything from old-time picking to Irish ballads, plus a dash of the blues. Opener singer-songwriter Brad Yoder s unique mix of humorous, poetic, political, funky, and edgy original songs, covering a musical range from folk to indie rock (with unexpected musical and lyrical twists), has earned him a loyal following ranging from kids in single digits through retirees. Fri., 5/23: CLOSED for The Spring Acoustic Getaway (aka Spring Festival ) Featuring Frank Vignola, Julie Gold, James Keelaghan, David Massengill, Victoria Vox, The MSG Blues Trio, Valerie Dupont, and The Big Vocalotto. Three days of concerts and workshops for Folk Project musicians and listeners. See Fri., 5/30: Rich Deans & The Rainmakers with Sydney Kayne Rich Deans writes songs that are more like novellas set to haunting melodies evocative of days past. They are story- and character-driven, and often find their settings in historical fiction. A perfect example of that, and probably his most widely-known song, is Don t Dig My Grave Too Deep, as recorded by Pat Wictor. Rich is backed by The Rainmakers with mandolin, keyboard, harmonica, bass, and harmony vocals. Starting as a toddler, opener Sydney Kayne was obsessed with music. She listened to all genres of music (alternative, folk, rock, bluegrass, etc.) and soon decided she wanted to create music of her own. At age 6 she began playing an acoustic guitar. By 7, she was writing original songs. We saw her, a grizzled veteran at age 14, at our December Open Stage, and immediately booked her for this opening slot. She ll be worth watching. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children 12 and under are free. As Goldstein calls a hey, the protons and electrons of the helium molecules do a hey for four. When Chorus Jig is danced, there is a cosmic contra corners among the stars. When the ladies allemande with the men orbiting, the planets orbit around their binary stars and when we line up in threes for triplets there is a syzygy in the heavens. And as we go into the center, a black hole is created. Beware the butterfly whirl which results in the butterfly effect. Non-dancing children must be supervised at all times. His two workshops are a perfect example of how our weekend is designed for musicians and non-musicians. The first will delve into the history of the guitar the elements and developments that occurred before the Civil War and that are incorporated into the guitars we all play today. His second workshop will delve into the book itself the research, the photography, the publishing journey, the team, the design, and the discoveries that changed not only the known history of America s guitar, but has set a new standard for books about instruments. Reviewer Recommendations Last month's film reviewers are back with items they would like to recommend to our readers:. From Lori Falco: If you enjoy works of fiction set in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 60's, I'd like to recommend the novel Such a Killing Crime by Robert Lopresti. This is a murder mystery populated by fictional characters with the occasional cameo appearance of real life folk musicians such as Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs. The novel is steeped in the history and lore of those years and is a great read for fans of the folk music scene. Full disclaimer: the author, Rob Lopresti, is a lifelong friend of mine. But the truth is I'd recommend this book even if I didn't know him. Such a Killing Crime was selected for discussion at the book club workshop at the Folk Project Spring Festival last year. An unrelated upcoming medical procedure may require several days of recovery at a home with minimal physical obstacles, most importantly stairs! Barrett Wilson has recently endured oral surgery, a vicious stomach virus, and a tax return fit for a mouse Looking forward to brighter days with the warmer weather of Spring! Sandie Reilly has been asked to develop and teach an adaptive sports cycling race team program for the Helen Hays Hospital in West Haverstraw, New York. Congratulations to Paul for this good work! Mike Agranoff returned recently from the high seas, having enjoyed a Windjammer cruise in the Mediterranean. Two other journeys of a different sort have been ticked off his to do list a successful colonoscopy, plus a renovated bathroom awaited his return from vacation. Paul Fisher is looking forward to some upcoming job interviews, having had his fill of unemployment. He and his wife are also slowly completing their consolidation out of their Easton PA home and into their Madison home. Rachel Streich submitted another Affordable Health Care Act success story, having recently obtained affordable, quality health care insurance thanks to the new law. Mark Schaffer s Mom just celebrated another birthday congratulations! Cecilia Rowedder reports her cat Mitzie had chronic renal failure recently, but a hospital visit and follow up shots have made things better, for Mom and cat. Cecilia has also lost about 30 pounds since last September! As if THAT isn t enough, Celia has a YouTube video that s going viral singing and playing ukulele when will the madness end? COMMITTEE REPORTS: FESTIVAL: Mark reports that the new name, Acoustic Getaway has been working well with outsiders. Registration is almost 2/3 filled as of today; Mark anticipates selling out. He hopes to not sell day passes, if full weekend registrations sell out. There will be 4 or 5 smaller, more intimate workshops every hour during the day they are going for increased quantity AND quality. PUBLICITY: Our FaceBook page is up to nearly 1,000 likes. Nancy Kelner is having new business cards printed up. Mike A. noted that there are now live links to performer videos in the Minstrel calendar. INTERNAL AFFAIRS: Dave reports that the first Home-Made Music Party featuring a concert set by a paid performer went great; 55 to 60 people attended. The transition from jamming to concert set to more jamming after the concert set went smoothly, says Dave. Spook Handy, the performer, stayed and jammed after the concert. The next one will feature Bob Cannon, on 4/12/14, at Allan and Cecilia s in Highland Park. He has a new Party venue lined up for May, in Long Valley, on 5/17/14. It s the THIRD Saturday, to avoid conflict with a Special Concert. He is looking at a home in Blairstown for the July HMMP. The hosts have a pool, as well as a flock of sheep, a sheepdog, and a 200 year old farmhouse, so he is hoping to start the Party in the afternoon at poolside. MINSTREL BOOKING: March attendance figures were similar to February, with no Open Stage, with an average paid attendance of 94. Mike reports the Minstrel is $713 in the black for the last 12 months. New bookings: Loose Canons will be a feature act in February 2015; Suzi Roche and Lucy Wainright on 8/15/14. Meeting adjourned 9:45pm. Those include, but are not restricted to, Standard G-Tuning and Standard C-Tuning for 5-string banjos, and G-D-A-E for plectrum or tenor banjos. The penalty for submitting a claim for banjos not tuned to one of the approved tunings is a term of 6 to 36 months in federal piano lounge and/or a fine not to exceed $10,000.
