2 w h y a n e w o r g a n? As with all mechanical devices that are fifty years old and in use every day, our organ now a half-century old is approaching the limits of its predicted life span. The past couple of years, we have experienced constant shutter problems (shutters control sound levels), continuous ciphers and electrical shut downs, and the thousands of leather hinges are nearing the end of their usefulness. This is especially trying during weddings and concerts when our organ is featured. We have been spending a goodly amount of money bandaging our organ as best we can but, like a car, eventually there is only so much that you can do. It is time to restore our organ. The cost to refurbish our current organ is in excess of $300,000. That being said, it is through the confluence of grace and timing that we are blessed with the good fortune of being able to not only refurbish our organ, but for an additional $150,000 to also expand and greatly improve our instrument. We are able to do this because of our purchase of the Trinity Lutheran Church organ in Canton, which closed this past year. If constructed from scratch by more traditional means, this project would cost us approximately $800,000. We could have a far superior organ for what amounts to half price. Of the pipe organ, Vatican II states, In the Latin Church, the pipe organ is to be held in high esteem, for it is the traditional musical instrument that adds a wonderful splendor to the Church s ceremonies and powerfully lifts up the spirit to God and to higher things. Our organ is ever-present in the life of our parish as we celebrate the Eucharist, other sacraments, and we put it use for special occasions such as weddings, funerals, concerts, prayer services, and ecumenical gatherings. As the centerpiece of our musical programming here at St. Sebastian, it has inspired our musicians, grown our musical programming, and attracted other musical organizations such as the Summit Choral Society and the Akron Regional Chamber Orchestra, which are now hosted at St. Sebastian. As organizations throughout Ohio and across the country realize the value of such instruments resulting in many valued instruments being refurbished and improved, we too are given a rare opportunity to provide ourselves and the next generation with a gift that will serve the parish and the community for years to come. 4 The Schantz Organ Company, founded in 1873 by A.J. Tschantz, (later changed to Schantz) is the largest and oldest American pipe organ builder still under management of the founding family. Combining his inventive skills with a love of music, Tschantz began building pipe organs after a brief venture into the construction of reed (parlor) organs. Today, work continues under the management of the fourth generation of the Schantz family. Commissions for the firm include projects ranging in scope from restoration of existing instruments to the construction of entirely new pipe organs, and in size from modest organs of a few ranks of pipes, to complex designs for some of the largest churches, cathedrals, and public spaces in the world.
