2 Grade 5 Theory Paper 1 Mark Scheme 1 (a) (i) (2 marks per correct time signature, allow 2/2 instead of 4/4) /4 (ii) Either or /2 (b) (i) arco means bowed/ arco is an indication to play with the bow. /2 (ii) Must be a string instrument: Violin/Viola/Violoncello [ cello ] (2 marks) [Award 0 marks for double bass the music is out of its range] /2 (c) (i) Chord X: IV C or IV 6/4 or IV(2 nd inversion) (2 marks) (Accept: subdominant 2 nd inversion etc.) [Award 1 mark for just IV with no inversion or the wrong inversion (IV B or IV 6 ) ] Chord Y: I (root position) (2 marks) (Accept just I or Ia or I 5/3 ) [Award 1 mark for the wrong inversion of I (I B /I 6 or I C /I 6/4 )] /2 (ii) Acciaccatura(s) (1 mark) [not appoggiatura(s)] /1 /15

3 2 Award up to 2 marks for all correct clefs, key signatures and time signatures. Give 2 marks to each correct part, but take away one of that part s marks if: - 2 or more stems go the wrong way/2 or more notes are wrong or missing accidentals. - Notes are written in the wrong octave (especially the tenor) - The part is incomplete. 3 (a) 5 marks (-1 for each incorrect accidental) (b) 5 marks (-1 for each incorrect accidental)

4 4 Award 2 marks for each correct bar. Deduct 1 from that bar s score for: An incomplete part or Missing accidentals/wrong Pitches. Deduct one from the overall score if there is an incorrect or no key signature. 5 2 marks per correct chord: (award if correctly written on the stave) Chord A: II Chord C: IV Chord E: I Chord B: V Chord D: V 6 (a) (i) Very Tranquil/Peacefully. For this question it would be impossible to include a mark scheme for every possibility. Some categorioes are given below for things to look out for when awarding a mark for this quesiton. Up to 15 marks: Marks 0-5 An unstable melody that leaps in awkward intervals and has little sense of rhythmic shape or phrasing. The melody has little relation to the given material and no concideration has been given to aspects of performance such as dynamics, breating (flute) or bowing (violin) or the melody is shorter than 8 bars. Marks 5-10 A viable melody which relates to the given material in aspects of melody and rhythm. The melody stays within the harmonic framework of the given key and returns to the tonic at the end for a sense of closure. Some concideration will have been given to aspects of performance (dynamics, breathing/bowing, phrasing, articulation) and the melody is 8 bars long. Marks A well thought out melody with a sense of direction whilst relating both harmonically and rhythmically to the given material, perhaps making use of sequences. The melody feels complete and has a sense of phrase structure, possibly impying certain cadences at the end of their lines and is the correct length (8 bars). Aspects of performance (dynamics, breathing/bowing, phrasing, articulation) have been carefully concidered and are appropritate for the chosen instrument. /15 Suggested Pass Mark: 70 Total marks: 0
