2 December 2011 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 12/2: Chorus Song Night Chorus Song Night has been an annual event on the Minstrel s schedule since We gather a panel of performers with a repertoire of songs for you, the audience, to sing, and resurrect the spirit of community singing that has sadly fallen from modern society. This year we will feature: Jack Kilrain: a big man with a big voice and a bag full of sea songs, drinking songs and pub songs. Mark Westphal: Beatles, Buddy Holly and other great songs well familiar to folkies of a certain age. Amy Livingston: Collector of songs from the Morris Ale tradition and other songs whose choruses may not be well known, but can be picked up instantly. Mike Agranoff: The Minstrel s Program Chair, and collector of wonderfully singable songs from many genres. Fri., 12/9: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. For information on how to secure a performance slot, call (973) , or openstage.shtml Fri., 12/16 & 12/23: Closed It just gets too crazy around the holidays Fri., 12/30: Dugan s Hooligans Farewell Concert with The Cotillion Singers Rescheduled from September 2nd s cancellation due to power outage after Hurricaine Irene Since 2004, the career of Dugan s Hooligans has been inextricably intertwined with the Folk Project. This family band comprised of Nancy (pianist and mother), George (percussionist and father), Connor (fiddler and son) and Sharlys (harper, whistle player, vocalist, step dancer and daughter) Dugan plays mostly Irish and other Celtic music. We have watched the two offspring grow from precocious children to accomplished virtuosi irrespective of their youth. Now with Connor off to Berklee in the fall, and Sharlys soon to leave the nest as well, the Hooligans will play its final performance as a band at the Minstrel. Interspersed with the band s performance, will be short solo segments from Connor and Sharlys with help from musicians outside the family to preview the new directions of their musical careers after the Hooligans. The Cotillion Singers is a 20-voice choral group that convenes in December of every year to perform at the Princeton Cotillion, a holiday event hosted by the Princeton Country Dancers. They perform a repertoire of Christmas, Solstice and other year-end songs, along with a mix of folk, ritual, and whatever other music strikes their fancy. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. 7 Folk Project Board Meeting December 2011 Board Meeting: The Summary The monthly meeting of the Folk Project Board was called to order at around 8:00 PM on November 1st, at the home of Ruth Wolfish. It was the Tuesday after The Storm, and many of us were still without power. Present were Lois DeRitter, Nancy Dugan, Gloria Friedman, Jim Gartner, Allan Kugel, Ed Roffman and Bobbie Rosengarten (Trustees); Mike Agranoff, Pat Brangs, Nancy Kelner, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Pam Robinson, Bob Safranek, Robin Schaffer, Rachel Streich, Rick Thomas and Leigh Walker. (Other Board Members); and Howie Goldman, Joe Graziano, Jim King, Lindsey Meyer, Greg More, Kevin Redden, Robin Roffman, Scott Ross, Mark Schaffer and Ruth Wolfish. Absent were Carl Croce, Scooter Ferguson, Bob McNally, Sandie Reilly, Chris Riemer, Ellen Schwartz and Jean Scully. Special thanks to Ruth, for playing guest hostess this evening. The minutes of October were accepted with some minor clarifications, and the Treasurer assured us of our continued solvency. Pam Robinson presented the recommendations of the ad-hoc Nominations Committee, which will be summarized elsewhere in this newsletter. The board had high praise for this effort, which involved a lot of churn and a number of worthy new replacements. In the words of Mike Agranoff, it was a great, great job. (Applause ensued.) President Roffman reminded the group that while Carl Croce is stepping down as Festival chair, we wouldn t have had a Festival in 2011 if he hadn t been willing to rise to the challenge. Hip, hip, for Carl. Otherwise, from the committees, we learned that: There is good news and bad news on the Festival front. The good is that we had a good Festival in October at Star Lake, the bad is that because of renovation work, that facility won t be available next May. As incoming co-chairs, Mark and Robin Schaffer have a possible fall-back venue in mind, but they re also scouting other locations. The Minstrel had a great month in October, with over 170 in the room for Frank Vignola as well as a large turnout for the Jeremy Kittel Band, Even the Open Stage was strong, at 55, and we probably averaged 130 paid for regular shows. Upcoming acts of note include the Cotillion Singers, John Forster, Nuala Kennedy, Beppe Gambetta and Bill Staines. See website for details. Lindsey Meyer will present Peter Spencer in a Folk Project house concert in January. Peter is an old Folk Project favorite, now living in Washington State, but will be back east visiting family over the holidays. Swingin Tern is eagerly anticipating three of its biggest events in the next few months: The Harvest Hoot, the New Year s Dance and the Anniversary Dance. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned sometime around 9:30. Next month is the Annual General Membership Meeting at the Chimney Rock Inn, in Gillette. All members are encouraged to attend, and you can find the details elsewhere in this newsletter. 12 Good of the Order/Community News This is a place to share news about memorable events and challenges you have faced in the past month with your Folk Project Community. The NJ Folk Festival has awarded Roger Deitz its Lifetime Achievement Award for his long-time efforts to promote folk music in New Jersey and around the country both as a musician and singer as well as writer for Sing-Out and other publications. Many Folk Project members struggled with loss of electric power during the pre- Halloween snow storm. Mark Schaffer remarked, Our house used to be in the woods, but now we live in an open field. Christine DeLeon wasn t one to just let the weather anomaly go by; she wrote a wonderful new song: Snow in October. Nancy Dugan reports that daughter Sharlys (who did well on her SATs) is busy considering colleges. Meanwhile, Connor continues to enjoy his first year at Berklee. Everyone is looking forward to their upcoming Minstrel concert on Dec. 30. Rick Thomas father passed away during the last week of October, at the age of 93. Rick, and two brothers who travelled from the west coast, were able to spend quality time with him before his passing. They loved him, and he will be missed. Longtime FP member Paul Brangs mother, Jean Collins Brangs, also passed away in October. Paul, speaking expressively at her funeral, remarked that loss of memory in the months before her passing seemed to put her into a restful, meditative state. Jim Gartner s sister, Pat, has gone into hospice care. Jim, along with his other sister and two brothers are visiting as much as they can, sharing time with love and support. Scott Ross reports that his daughter, Zoey, who has shown renewed interest at playing viola this year was picked by her music teacher for the NJ Youth Symphony Orchestra. Pam Robinson reports excitedly, that her 2002 Honda Civic is reaching its 100,000-mile point. In the past 3 months Pam and Bob have taken two round trips to Wisconsin; the most recent was to celebrate Bob s cousin s wedding in Milwaukee Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun... Yet Another Music Party! Sun., 12/4, 3pm Tim Weinrich s There is another large and talented community of musicians in the Princeton area, but few of us ever get to make music with them or even meet them, simply because they are inconveniently far away.
