REMEMBERING PETE SEEGER with special guest SPOOK HANDY Spook Handy first met Pete Seeger in 2003 and often spoke with him twice a month. They talked about philosophy, the founders of the nation, Lincoln, Native Americans, Woody Guthrie, Ledbelly, Martin Luther King, music theory, songs they were writing, etc., for hours. Spook and Pete played together over 50 times through the years. Quoting Spook, I hope everybody who loved Pete or was touched by him even in the smallest way can find a way to get involved with a group of people and SING! Whether you sing soft or loud, sing with your heart. Don t worry about what your voice sounds like. Listen to the voices of others. Listen to the blend and how your voice contributes to the mix. Encourage those around you to join in. Disarm their fears by welcoming them into the circle. This is one of the best ways to nurture community. SING! Spook Handy s performance will start at 9pm and run about minutes. After his set, we will continue our own music making! There is no admission charge as this is a benefit of your membership in the Folk Project. Members and guests are welcome. Folk Project membership forms will be available for those smart enough to figure out it s a no-brainer to join! 2 March 2014 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 3/7: Andy Cohen with Low N Lonesome Since forever, Andy Cohen has been a serious student, preserver, and performer of the acoustic country blues traditions from the 20 s to the 40 s. The fact that he is a kick-ass fingerstyle guitarist and stride piano player hasn t hurt that effort. Besides the standard 6-string flat-top, he also plays resophonic guitar, banjo, and the Dolceola (a zither-based keyboard instrument). He combines his performance skills and knowledge base to present a show that is at once highly entertaining and informative. Openers Rob Adkins and Phil Drum are two fine acoustic guitar players and songwriters from Saratoga Springs, NY. As Low N Lonesome, they play tasty fingerstyle blues & ragtime music. They perform originals, as well as fingerstyle-based versions of tunes from old school jazz, rock, folk, and country music, covering artists from Robert Johnson and Louis Armstrong to Hank Williams and Bob Dylan. Fri., 3/14: Closed Due to a national conference being held at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship on the weekend of March 14-16, the building will not be available to the Minstrel this night. Next Open Stage will be April 18 (not the usual 2nd Friday.) Fri., 3/21: Legends of the Celtic Harp Fronted by famed harper and storyteller Patrick Ball, this trio of premier Celtic harpers takes you deep into the myths, magic and fabled history of this most captivating instrument. Besides the harp, bandmember Lisa Lynne plays mandolin and bouzouki, and Aryeh Frankfurter plays cittern and nyckelharpa (the Swedish keyed fiddle). Seamlessly integrated with the music, Ball weaves tales from another age when the harp was indeed an instrument of magic. Fri., 3/28: Orrin Star with Robin Greenstein Orrin Star is an ex-winfield Champion flatpicking guitarist as well as a mandolinist. He applies those talents to bluegrass and Celtic classics, swing tunes, novelty songs, some originals, and a wide variety of other music. He s also a charming and very funny guy on stage. There are precious few traditionally oriented performers who have also been finalists at the prestigious Kerrville Songwriters Festival. Opener Robin Greenstein is one such. She is also a fine guitarist and banjo player. UPCOMING: 4/4: Jack Williams,The Levins; 4/11: The Bucky Pizzarelli/Ed Laub Duo, Grover Kemble; 4/18: Open Stage (not the usual 2nd Friday); 4/25: Spuyten Duyvil, Robinson Treacher; 5/2: OCEAN Celtic; 5/9: Open Stage; 5/16: Zoe Mulford; 5/23: CLOSED (FP Spring Acoustic Getaway); 5/30: Rich Deans & The Rainmakers, Sydney Kayne; 6/6: John Gorka, Nalani & Sarina; 6/13: Open Stage; 6/20: Liza & AJ, Spook Handy; 6/27: The Boxcar Lilies, Oakes & Smith The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children 12 and under are free. For travel information or information on shows, call (973) or visit our website at 2 To volunteer, volunteers@folkproject.org March 1: DAN BLACK & MR. (610) ; 14 More on dancing at the Country Dance and Song Society The Name of the Rose A rose by any other name would smell as sweet Shakey the Spear As reported in the minutes of the February Folk Project board meeting (see page 10), there have been some name changes in the works that will take effect in March. Here are the details from the chairs of the appropriate committees. Folk Project Acoustic Getaway (née Festival) If a rose came hidden in packaging labelled Kentucky bluegrass, you may pass it by when shopping for, say, an anniversary gift. The word festival is misleading to the outside world the prospective guests who keep our event vibrant and healthy. Festivals are street fairs, or huge outdoor concerts held in fields. We are a 150-person gathering, focused on listening, learning, and participating. We chose the new name Folk Project Acoustic Getaway to better communicate a sense of this very special weekend. But feel free to use the F word. For those of us who already know and love it, it s still our Festival. Acoustic Getaway Chair Mark Schaffer Home-Made Music Parties (née Evenings of Music) Folksters, in order to stir things up and accurately portray our twice monthly music parties, we are changing the name for the Evening of Music. Starting in March, the name will henceforth be titled, Home-Made Music Parties. Additional changes will include a 7pm start time as well as featured performers. Pete Seeger We lost a good friend on January 27. Pete Seeger, proclaimed A Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000, rejoined his beloved Toshi and moved on to teach the angels banjo. Some of us knew him personally. A lucky few had performed with him along the way. All of us in The Folk Project were touched by him. A little FP history: In the early 90s, the Project sponsored the publication of a Bob Franke songbook. Liza DiSavino was the music editor on that effort. Shortly thereafter, she proposed the Board sponsor an Environmental Songbook. After several month s hard work, For the Beauty of the Earth, an environmental songbook to benefit the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater was published. Pete Seeger was involved in the work on that songbook. As a result of his contact with the Folk Project, he and Toshi became Lifetime Honorary Members of the FP, and, to our surprise, he actually read the monthly newsletters, occasionally making some comment or contact about a specific article. He is still on our membership rolls. Pete was a lot of things singer, activist, writer, demonstrator, but he touched us all primarily because he always advocated Participation. He demanded, cajoled, encouraged his audiences to join in his songs. Passive, polite crowds were not his thing. With Pete, music was something to be experienced together, without a line between performer and audience. He wasn t the only singalong performer, but he was certainly the most publicized. It became a norm for Folk music and spread across the culture. So when we re at The Minstrel joining in a chorus, sitting in a circle at an Evening of Music, at Festival sharing the good times with friends, listen closely. There s an echo of Pete Seeger among the voices. Jim King My mom took me to see Pete perform when I was 4 years old. My sister and I sat up front in a kid s concert at the Brooklyn Public Library. Pete sang out, having us, Jump down, turn around, and pick a bale of cotton! I remember jumping down, awestruck as his banjo frailed the musical magic. I could feel the cotton in my hand, and the glory of his message. I ve lived in awe of Folk Music ever since. Thank you, Pete! In my teen and adult years, Pete was a moral beacon for us, singing and leading demonstrations against war, for equality, labor, and struggle for freedom. Pete didn t try to show off his singing or playing; instead he used his power to unite people in song, encouraging us to do it ourselves. He showed us that people and song could change the world. Blacklisted by the US government and prevented from singing on radio or TV, he sang for us at schools, summer camps and colleges, presenting his message of freedom and struggle. Pete s message will continue to resonate, but it s up to us now to keep singing it! I don t know when the Folk Project decided to offer a lifetime FP membership to Pete and Toshi Seeger; it felt good to print a newsletter label for them every month. This month, we can no longer mail the newsletter, but please let us continue to say, Thank you Pete, as we let our guitars, banjos, hammers, bells, and voices resonate together in justice, freedom, and love between our brothers & sisters, all over this land. Pete Seeger Memorial Sing Sunday, March 2, 2 5pm The New York Packet, singers of songs of the sea, will celebrate the life, music, and spirit of Pete Seeger. Pete Seeger worked tirelessly for the betterment of society and the environment. He felt that music was a powerful tool to influence his fellow citizens young and old. His spirit lives on and grows as people follow his humble but powerful lead in the fight for equal rights and to clean up the environment. Many special musical guests with connections to Pete and the Clearwater have been invited. As Pete would want, everyone is encouraged to join in, not just a concert, a sing along! 6 6 Folk Project Special Concerts Presents A House Concert with Marc Berger Saturday, April 19, 2014, 7:30pm Suggested donation $15 Rockaway, New Jersey We ran into Marc Berger at NERFA last Fall and were immediately impressed by his music and energy. His songs are extremely well crafted, and his lyrics paint a vivid portrait of the American West. This house concert is an introduction to Marc and his music in advance of a larger multi-media presentation in the works for later in the year. He is currently testing the project in larger theaters, and we are looking for an appropriate venue with high-def projection capabilities in our area. So, take this opportunity to experience Marc s music in a rootsy, stripped down configuration. Think of it as an appetizer More info at folkproject.org. Questions? The SSSB take the songs of The Grateful Dead and strip them down to their roots with tasty acoustic jams, sweet harmonies, and a deep love of the material. They have been touring around the west coast for a few years and were a featured act on one of Bob Weir s TRI Studios webcasts. After a year of pestering, poking, and prodding David, I was finally able to talk them into heading out here for their first ever east coast shows! David and the boys are friends with a great many hot musicians in the area so you never know who might show up to sit in. We re still working on a possible opening act so stay tuned for more info. 7 10 Folk Project Board Meeting February, 2014 Board Meeting: The Summary The February Board Meeting was called to order at 8pm at Steve Humphrey s house in Randolph, NJ. Present: Steve Humphreys, Rachel Streich, Paul Fisher. Scooter Ferguson, George Otto, Mark Schaffer, Robin Schaffer, Joanne Cronin, Mike Agranoff, Allan Kugel, Dave Sherman, Bill Henderson, Lindsey Meyer, Grover Kemble, Eddie Roffman, Lori Falco, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Mike Del Vecchio, Sandie Reilly, Lois DeRitter. Absent: Leigh Walker, Jean Scully, Bob McNally, Gloria Friedman, Shari Korenstein, Barrett Wilson, Jim Gartner. Guests: Pat Brangs, Wendy Keilin TREASURER S REPORT: 2013 books have been finalized, except for one $25 invoice to be paid. We lost approximately $1292, but our Vanguard investment value increased by $8,000. OLD BUSINESS INSURANCE: New Certificates of Insurance from our new insurance carrier have been sent to chairs of our various performance venues. Annual cost of insurance coverage for all FP events will be about $2575. NEW BUSINESS: Wendy Keilin brought it to our attention that NERFA (Northeast Regional Folk Alliance) will be doing a 1-day conference in NJ, on April 5, at Sanctuary Concerts location in Chatham, There will be a music business conference for music venues, musicians, luthiers, etc, with workshops and a luncheon, followed by juried showcases (10 artists). The concert showcase will be open to the general public. Wendy would like the FP to co-sponsor the event to bring NJ area folkies together. FP members could be recruited to volunteer, and the FP could help publicize the event. Wendy would also like to record the event, either on audio, video or both. Scooter moved to co-sponsor, motion seconded and passed unanimously. Dave Sherman, as Internal Affairs Chair, is changing the name of our monthly music parties from Evenings of Music to Home-Made Music Parties, which he feels is more descriptive of the events. We also revisited Dave s motion, tabled from last month, to present a mini-concert or workshop before the jamming portion of the Home-Made Music Party. Performers would be drawn from both inside and outside the FP. Non-FP members would be welcome as guests or FP members but would be encouraged to join FP to continue attending future HMMP s. Dave is asking for a budget of up to $1,000 to pay performers over the next 12 months. Discussion ensued. A vote was taken 18 Yes, 1 Abstention. Dave has his performance budget. COMMITTEE REPORTS SOUND REINFORCEMENT: Mike D reported that the newly purchased wireless sound system intended to pipe concert sound out to the Lobby, has been tested and works as intended. MINSTREL BOOKING: Two very big shows last month, resulting in a profit of $512 for the month. They had to evacuate the room due to a gas smell during Jean Rohe s concert. She missed her second set, but will be coming back March FESTIVAL: Spring Festival registration is set to launch 2/15/14. Joanne Cronin came up with a new name for our semi-annual weekend event it will now be called the FP Acoustic Getaway, which is felt to be more accurately descriptive. PUBLICITY: Paul is getting caught up. Our Festival (now FP Acoustic Getaway ) is listed in Acoustic Guitar Magazine s 50 Best list, and Acoustic Guitar Magazine will be listing upcoming Minstrel events on their website. MEMBERSHIP: A new membership dues structure will go into effect in March: $25/year for Individual ($20 for enewsletter), $30/year for Family ($25 for enewsletter), plus four levels of Premium Membership from $50/year up to $500 year, most of which is tax-deductible and includes gifts of DVDs of great performances from HSNOI.
