2 TO DREAM OF GIANTS Roger Schmidli Duration: 3 35 Level: Program Notes: To Dream o Giants is a work o three main musical phases suggesting the idea o the listener entering a dream-like world where giants exist as a noble but earsome race. The opening chorale in the woodwind and then brass is meant to sound as the beginnings o sleep. The introduction o the percussion and the rhythmic moti through [30] indicate the transition rom sile sleep to an awareness o entering a dream-like world o broad landscapes and epic proportion. Finally, at [6], we encounter our giants. The music rom that point should become energetically tribal and heroic in nature throughout until the work s conclusion. Rehearsal Notes: I the band director has an excess o percussionists, the tom-tom parts could easily be doubled or iact with varying types o low pitched drum. Directors are encouraged to make sure there is a good anvil sound with other possibilities being metal pipe or break drum. Or both! About the Cooser: Roger resides in Melbourne, Australia where he is a proessional musician, cooser, conductor and music educator. As a trombonist, he works in theatre, and has recorded or television and movie soundtracks, perorming in the past with the likes o Ray Charles and Jerry Lewis. He is also a long-time member o the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra. Roger studied music and music education at the University o Melbourne. He is currently teaching instrumental music and conducting a range o ensembles at Carey Baptist Grammar, alongside perorming and coosing. N.B.
