5 Admission Registration is for a full academic year which consists of two semesters. September January = First semester February June = Second semester For Ballet students, the year is divided into three twelveweek semesters. September December = First semester December April = Second semester April June = Third semester Students will automatically be billed for the subsequent semester unless the office and the individual teacher are notified of the student s intention to withdraw. Some semesters encompass more than eighteen weeks. Unavoidable absence because of illness and lessons cancelled by the teacher will be made up. It is the responsibility of the student to be available for the make-up lessons during the teacher s regular teaching schedule. Only in exceptional circumstances will a refund be granted. Application for refund must be approved by the Executive Director. Bursaries Students in good standing who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance and have been registered students at VAM for a minimum of one semester may apply for a bursary. Brain Boosters Program Since the days of Pythagoras, math and music have been considered closely connected: universal languages that transcend cultural and geographical diversity. The human brain is divided into two hemispheres; the right side of the brain is traditionally associated with creativity, imagination, and macro thinking, while the left side is often described as logical, linear and analytical. Most children s programs follow this right/left dichotomy where one side is emphasized at the expense of the other. Consequently, children, at an early age, become acclimated to working one side of the brain at a time. Brain Boosters engages both sides of the brain through a combination of Music and Math and strives for the following objectives: + Developing cognitive and rational thinking + Fostering a child s natural curiosity for discovery + Encouraging independent learning and problem-solving + Building confidence and self-expression Children must be 4 years of age by September 1st, 2013 s Class fees per semester. 16 Classes Brain Boosters (Orff + Jelic)... $460 MPM (Math)... $460 Brain Boosters (Ages 4-7 yrs.)... 9 Suzuki Program Dr. Shinichi Suzuki developed a program of music instruction for young children based upon the belief that children can learn to play musical instruments as naturally and effectively as they learn to speak. Dr. Suzuki believed that the environment a child lives in is of supreme importance to the development of learned skills. Musical skills can be nurtured at home by parents in the same way many other skills are developed. Suzuki parents attend lessons with their children, and become acquainted with the ideas and techniques introduced by the teacher so that they can carry through the learning process in daily practice at home. Parental support is vital to the musical development of Suzuki students. Pre-registration meetings with parents are held before students are enrolled in Suzuki violin, viola, cello, and piano. After enrolment, parents and children attend group preparation classes which explain the fundamental skills of playing, demonstrate care and handling of instruments, and introduce ideas regarding how parents and children can work together to foster an interest in music. Private lessons begin when it is agreed that the child is ready to learn to play and the parent is ready to make the necessary commitment to assist. Once the student can play the beginning pieces, a weekly group performance class takes the place of the group preparation class. (In Suzuki flute, group performance classes are held from the beginning of the course.) s Individual lesson and class fees per semester. 11 Orff Program The method of music instruction for young children developed by Carl Orff, German composer and educator, stresses as its ultimate purpose the enrichment of life through the development of inherent musicality. The spontaneous rhythms children create in their rhymes, chants, and games provide a natural starting point for this development. The Orff program offers a sequence of classes for children 3 1/2 to 13 years old. A progressive development of musical skill, creativity, and aesthetic awareness is achieved through work with the elements of music contained in speech patterns, poetry, song, and movement. A heightened awareness of rhythm and melody is developed through playing soprano, alto, and tenor recorders, and a wide range of percussion instruments, some with and some without pitch. The Orff program develops musicality in a natural and joyful environment, and it provides excellent preparation for other instrumental programs offered at VAM. Children must be 3 1/2 years of age by September 1st, 2013 Class fee per semester. * Part of Bonus Class Program 16 Classes Orff... $ /2-4 yrs.... Saturday 9:45 10:30 4 yrs.... 12 Kodaly Program The practical realization of the teaching philosophy of the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly was developed by several dedicated Hungarian music teachers and has been adapted in many countries. Based on the use of the unaccompanied singing voice, it develops accuracy of pitch as well as teaching, writing, and listening skills. It thus forms a solid basis for every kind of music study. At the pre-school and kindergarten levels, the emphasis is on action songs and carefully chosen games to form the foundation of musical skills. Children learn to recognize melodic and harmonic relationships between pitches through their experience with simple folk material, songs, and games. Hand signs are used as a visual aid to help establish pitch, and the use of signs with both hands helps teach intervals and independent part-singing. Rhythmic exercises and combinations of ostinatos with melodies further strengthen the ability to think polyphonically. Musical literacy develops naturally from the skills gained in Kodaly classes, where the primary consideration is the joy of making music. VAM offers nine levels of sequential instruction beginning at the pre-school level. Children must be 3 1/2 years of age by September 1st, 2013 Class fee per semester. * Part of Bonus Class Program 16 Classes Kodaly... $260 Prep 1 (3 1/2-4 yrs.)...
