It will definitely be the last one at Star Lake. The owners of the camp have decided that they no longer wish to rent to outside groups, so the 2010 Fall Festival will be our last there. The future beyond that is uncertain. Furthermore, I am retiring as Festival Chair after the Fall Festival and we have not yet found a new chair. The Folk Project Festival is a tradition that dates back to That s 37 years of fun-filled weekends of music and fellowship. I hope that the tradition will continue into the future, but there isn t going to be another festival unless someone volunteers to become the next chair. If you re interested in the position, please contact our president, Scooter Ferguson, at president@ folkproject.org. Otherwise, the Fall 2010 Festival could be the last Folk Project Festival ever. 2 September 2010 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Concerts every Friday at 8pm at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ Fri., Sept. 3: Bill Staines and Butch Ross For just about as long as anyone currently involved in folk music can remember, Bill Staines is the archetypical contemporary folk singer. People have been singing his songs on stage, in recording studios, and around campfires for over 30 years. He is responsible for such classics as Roseville Fair, All God s Critters Got a Place in the Choir, and River, all with choruses that beg to be sung with. Come and see a true living legend. Our opener Butch Ross is a songwriter who fell in love with American traditional music. He plays mountain dulcimer, and mixes old country and Appalachian songs with fiddle tunes played on the dulcimer, and his own wordy, literate, poetic ballads about people, places, and situations you might read about in a good book of short stories. He has a strong clear voice and an engaging stage presence. Fri., Sept. 10: Open Stage Open Stage is the opportunity for local and touring musicians to perform on our stage. Hosted by President Scooter, these informal nights have become a subset of the Folk Project community, both for performers and listeners. Those wishing to perform should visit for signup procedures. Fri., Sept. 17: Red Hen and Danielle Miraglia Acoustic uartet Red Hen delves into the deeper roots of American traditional music, playing songs and tunes from Appalachian Old-Time and Celtic sources. Their authenticity is enhanced when mixed with award-winning music and songs written by band members. Their music features fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass, dobro, and 4-part vocal harmony. Opener Danielle Miraglia is by way of contrast at the other end of the folk spectrum. She sings mostly her own well-written hard-hitting songs backed up with strong punchy guitar work. Whether recounting a bar encounter between a red-neck vet and a women s rights activist, commenting on the tribulations of a road musician, or delivering a rocked-out slide guitar version of the classic Stagger Lee, Danielle puts on a strong show. Fri., Sept. 24: Finest Kind and The Loose Canons Tonight a program of exuisite vocal harmony. From Canada comes Finest Kind, the trio of Ian Robb, Shelly Posen, and Anne Downey. These three singers, each a powerhouse in their own right, combine to produce some of the most beautiful and intricate harmonies in the folk world. Much of their material stems from the traditional repertoire of their respective native countries, England, Canada, and the US. But they also glean from genres from Western Swing to Sacred Harp to Tin Pan Alley to their own formidable pens. Perhaps our opening act s very name, The Loose Canons will give you a clue as to their approach to music. This 11-member choral group sings intricate vocal arrangements of folk songs, do wop, classical favorites as well as participatory pieces. But they specialize in parodies, satire, novelty songs, and other bits of musical humor. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Joanne Cronin s mother died recently, and she d like to thank the Folk Project for the condolence card and flowers, as well as all the other support provided over the past few years. Duane Degutis s mother also died last week. Duane is one of the old core members from the early days, and remembered by many of those present. Mike Agranoff will be backing up Connor Dugan in a mid-august fiddle contest at the New Jersey State Fair. Russ Kelner got to play his first wedding gig, and Nancy had her first senior moment: trying to turn up the volume on the radio with the dimmer switch for her lights. Rick and Cathy Thomas haven t yet closed, but they are definitely buying a house on Washington s Olympic Peninsula. Sometime in 2012, they plan a reaaaally big party, to give away most of their worldly possessions before heading west. Elizabeth Lachowicz is looking forward to a visit from her sisters, one of whom is coming from Chicago and another all the way from China. Jean Scully has landed a long-term temp job that will keep her occupied through yearend. A big step up from Macy s, income wise. And daughter Siobhan was promoted to manager of the concession stand at Hopatcong State Park, after just a couple of weeks on the job. Michael Mitsch is very proud of his wife Trina who was sworn in as the Mayor of Randolph recently. Also proud of his 11 yr old daughter Elizabeth, for practicing and playing well in front of 500 at NJ State Fair Fiddle competition in Sussex. 13

5 Folk Project Board Meeting August, 2010 Board Meeting: The Summary The Directors of The Folk Project were called to order at 8:03, at the home of Chris Riemer, with the air conditioning set as high as environmentally defensible. Present were Lois DeRitter, Scooter Ferguson, Nancy Kelner, Jim King, Jim Gartner, Evelyn Maurer, Brad Pryor and Ruth Wolfish (Trustees), Mike Agranoff, Pat Brangs, Carl Croce, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Chris Riemer, Pam Robinson, Bobbie Rosengarten, Bob Safranek, Jean Scully and Rick Thomas (Other Board Members) and Joanne Cronin (Guest). Absent were Connie Crawford, Lori Falco, Alan Kugel, Sandie Reilly, Ed Roffman, Mark Schaffer and Rivka Willick. The minutes were accepted with some minor amendments, and there was minimal discussion of the Treasurer s report, given that Treasurer Ed Roffman was on an overseas junket. (not related to Folk Project business ) From the standing committee reports, we learned that: Everything is percolating along on the Publicity front, and the re-engineering of the Folk Project website is proceeding apace. Some outlets, such as NJ Skylands, would like some uid-pro-uo, since if they re including us in their calendar pages, they d like a link from folkproject.org. No one had an objection to that, since it seemed fair. Membership chair Rick Thomas has developed an enhanced approach to generating mailing labels that will let new (and renewed) members get their first newsletter without having to wait a whole month for processing lag. Newsletter chair Carl Croce Carl had a new box of Free Pass cards for the Minstrel, and per an earlier discussion, President Scooter asked all the Directors to take some to hand out to potentially interested parties. When doing so, people should endorse them with their name, BOD (for Board of Directors) and the date issued. Minstrel Booking chair Mike Agranoff was disappointed in the 2010 Birthday Show, which almost set a record for general lack of participation. He s trying to think of ways to encourage the Project s more seasoned performers to throw their hats in the ring once again, and would be open to suggestions from the community at large. However, he also thinks Sandie Reilly had a great idea when she asked the audience to help with clean-up. It took us back to the old days, when the Minstrel MC always closed with a plea to help stack the chairs. The Horses Sing None of It Best of the Blues DVD is now ready for sale to any interested parties. Thanks to Mark Schaffer for coming up with the idea, as well as to all those folks behind the scenes who helped pull it together. 6 FP Fall Festival October 8-10 Have You Signed Up Yet? Registration is now open for the FP Fall Festival, which runs from October 8-10 at Star Lake Camp in Bloomingdale, NJ. You ll find a registration form in this newsletter, or you can register online at There are so many reasons to come to this festival that it s hard to know where to begin. We ve got a great line-up of performers: Anne Hills, who crafts beautiful songs of substance and performs them in a rich soprano voice; Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers, a vibrant band voted Most Wanted at the Emerging Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2008; and Aca~Perco, the duo of Jennie Avila, singer /songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Stephen Wright, drum maker and master percussionist. Folk Project performers will be songwriter, accordionist and guitar player Joe Petraitis, talented vocalist Jean Scully and The John Mina Group. John Mina is an accomplished doo-wop performer who has wowed the crowds at previous festivals with his doo-wop workshops. He will be joined by his son, Roman, and FP favorites Ken and Pat Rolston. Blue Moose will also be supplying our dance music, with Donna Hunt calling. We will continue our special dance program for this festival so if you d like to attend on Saturday primarily to dance, visit for details about the dance ticket. Sign up at enews.folkproject.org 18th Annual NJ Storytelling Festival The Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton Sunday, Sept, 12 10am 6pm The all-day festival, which is free with admission to the Grounds, brings the best storytellers from all over New Jersey to enchant adults and children alike. The Oral Story is one of the oldest art forms which became the foundation of theater, literature and poetry. The festival brings together top artists on multiple stages performing programs for adult, family, and general audiences. Rain or shine. Various stages allow attendees to choose from a wide variety of oral performances, including Projectile Ken Galipeau and Carol Titus. With four different performances every hour from noon until 6pm, there is something for every listening age and taste. Shows designed for adults, young children and general audiences are offered throughout the day. The Festival ends with a Lightning Round of stories 3 minutes or less. The founder and director of the doowop group Brylcream, he has shared the stage with The Temptations, The Four Tops, Three Dog Night and many more. Joining him onstage will be his daughter Viva, his son Roman, his good friend Ken Rolston, and others. Donna Hunt was an early stalwart and organizer of Swingin Tern dances. A sophisticated caller and an affirmative teacher, she presently lives in Wilmington, Delaware and is a regular caller at the Glenside Thursday Night and Saturday Night Dances and the Valley Contra Dance in Bethlehem PA. Donna has called for dances throughout New England, the Mid-Atlantic states and as far away as California. Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers call their music Scandilachian a hearty stew of Norwegian, Swedish, and American tunes. They take songs and tunes, old and new, and infuse them with an almost punk-rock kind of energy, all the while respecting the traditions.
