2 Welcome! From the Board of Directors of the Barrie Music Festival Association The Barrie Music Festival Association is looking forward to the 2019 Barrie Music Festival. For the past 36 years the festival has provided an opportunity for musicians of all ages to come together to perform, learn and connect with each other through music. We are proud to continue the legacy of our association in supporting and encouraging the musical community in our region. Please feel free to copy as many as you need for your students There should be at least ONE Registration Form filled out for each student or group. If your student enters many classes, please use as many Forms as you need and staple them together. Please read through all of the General Rules and Regulations before filling out a Form. There are also Discipline- Specific Guidelines to read at the beginning of each Division. Payment will be by cheque or e-transfer only. 5 Volunteers We would like to thank everyone who volunteers their time and energy to the Barrie Music Festival. It would simply be impossible to operate with such success if it were not for their contribution to our events. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! We are always in need of more support for the students of the arts to be able to have this opportunity to perform and obtain an honest evaluation of their efforts. Fragrance-Free Events We are asking for your assistance and understanding for people with to various environmental sensitivities. Please avoid wearing any personal products with any kind of scent while in attendance in our venues. Thank you. Funding for the Barrie Music Festival Association comes from our entry fees, generous sponsors both private and corporate and, in large part, by our participation in staffing Delta Bingo. Thank you to all of the volunteers who assist with this fundraising. If this interests you as a way in which you can contribute to our organization, the commitment is small and the rewards for us are great. 6 General Rules and Regulations The following rules have been established to ensure equal fairness for all competitors. Please read them carefully before applying to participate in the Barrie Music Festival. If you have any questions or concerns, please them to the Festival Administrator at - administrator@barriemusicfestival.com - and we will do our best to clarify them for you. Governance 1. All matters not dealt with in these rules shall be referred the Barrie Music Festival Association, (BMFA) Board of Directors through the Festival Administrator. The Board s decision shall be final and binding on all issues. All concerns or complaints must be submitted in writing to the address above. 2. All entries with fees must be submitted online, delivered or mailed (postmarked) by January 30 th, There is an Early Bird deadline of December 31 st, 2018 with a lower fee own choice repertoire not submitted to the Festival Administrator by January 31 st, 2019, will not be listed in the printed program. 3. The BMFA reserves the right to refuse any entry, in which event the fees will be refunded. Refunds and/or credits will not be made for any other reason. 4. It is the responsibility of the teachers and competitors to accurately complete the registration form. Incorrectly completed entries cannot be corrected once scheduling is finished. 5. All teachers will receive notice in March 2019 regarding the times and locations of the classes in which their students are entered. The BMFA reserves the right to adjust the competition dates in response to entries received. 6. The BMFA will provide a piano for all sessions that require an accompanist. 7. The BMFA CANNOT assume responsibility for damage or loss of instruments, equipment or personal property. 8. Coaching from the audience or off-stage during performances is not permitted. If coaching occurs, the competitor involved will be subject to disqualification. 9. By submitting an entry, competitors consent to the publication of their name, performance time(s) and placement in the Barrie Music Festival publications and on the website and agree to perform at the time(s) scheduled or forfeit their performance(s) and entry fees. Eligibility 1. In AGE LIMIT classes, the age of a competitor will be determined as of midnight on December 31 st, Competitors must provide their birth date on the entry form. Those selected for scholarships may be required to establish proof of age. 2. All classes are open to AMATEURS only unless otherwise specified. An amateur is defined as a person whose principal livelihood is not derived from the performance or teaching of music or drama. 3. Competitors in Church Choirs, Chorus and Orchestra classes may be amateur or professional, provided they are bona-fide members of the ensemble since January of the year of entry. Conductors may be either amateur of professional and one conductor may conduct any number of ensembles. 4. Please note that the Registration Form has been updated and each competitor must decide to register as a competitive or non-competitive participant. This choice is available for ALL classes; however, a single competitor may not choose both levels in the same class. Competitive participants will receive an Adjudication and a mark and will be automatically be competing for the 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd placements in their class. Non-competitive participants will receive and Adjudication only. 5. Competitors performing post-associate level repertoire, or who have completed a degree in Music, must enter only the OPEN classes in Piano, Voice, Strings, Guitar, Woodwinds, or Brass, unless specified otherwise. They are thereby eligible to be recommended by their Adjudicator to enter the OPEN category of the OMFA competition. The winners of the OPEN classes at the OMFA Competition will proceed to the National Music Festival competition. Such competitors are not eligible to compete in the Rose Bowl competitions, nor are they eligible for the Senior or Advanced Scholarships, which are for graded competitors only. 6. Special Needs classes are offered in every discipline. If teachers feel that specific accommodations are required for their student, please indicate this on the Registration Form or speak directly to the Festival Administrator. 5

7 Competition 1. No rehearsing is permitted on stage. 2. Own Choice pieces are selected by the competitor, usually from within a defined list, and will be listed on the Registration Form. 3. In Own Choice selections, all competitors must supply an ORIGINAL copy of their music for the Adjudicator. If the music score was purchased on the internet and printed from a computer, proof of purchase must accompany the copy (receipt to be stapled to the score) By federal law unauthorized photocopying of copyright music is illegal and any use of Photocopied material by competitors or accompanists will result in disqualification from the Barrie Music Festival. 4. Classes may be divided or combined at the discretion of the BMFA. 5. Memorization of music played is strongly encouraged however, it is not mandatory. The use of music may result in lowered mark, at the discretion of the Adjudicator. 6. Repeated music should be played at the discretion of the performer however, in higher levels, it is quite permissible and encouraged to not acknowledge repeats. Da Capo signs should be played as such at all levels. 7. Time limits, where indicated, will be strictly enforced. 8. Any test piece may only be used in ONE class by the same competitor. 9. No competitor will be allowed to enter more than once in any given class, with the exception of duet and trio classes. However, although it cannot be with the same partner and, with each entry, the repertoire must be different. 10. The use of cameras, video cameras, audio recorders or recording devises of any kind can be so very disruptive to the performer and the Adjudicator. In order to be sympathetic to friends and family who want to capture this moment, the BMFA will provide a single chair position of chair to be determined by the Adjudicator for one friend/family to sit in to take pictures of their own student performing. NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY WILL BE ALLOWED. 11. A free will donation instead of an admission fee will be accepted at each venue. Adjudications & Awards 1. After each class ends, the Adjudicator will spend a few minutes with the class and with each participant to discuss the various performances. The Adjudicator will briefly explain the positives of each performance and offer his or her opinion on how the participant could improve. At this point the Adjudicator will announce the 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place awardees and present them with their certificates and award the 1 st place performer with a medal. PLEASE NOTE 1 st place must achieve a mark of 85% or higher. From 75% to 85% is a 2 nd place standing and 70% to 75% is 3 rd place. 2. The Volunteer Desk Clerk may request of any competitor to verify that the regulations herein set out have been met original score, age requirements, etc. If an infringement of any kind has occurred, no mark will be awarded, but the adjudication will be given. 3. Adjudicators decisions are final. The Adjudicator must NOT be approached by any teacher, performer or audience member. Teachers and competitors are requested to make this known among the family/friends they have present. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the Desk Clerk or submitted in writing to the Festival Administrator. 4. In competitive classes, the names of First, Second and Third Place winners will be announced. Standings will not be announced beyond Third, however all competitors will receive a verbal and written adjudication and a mark. 5. In non-competitive classes, a full verbal and written adjudication will be given. No marks or standing will be announced and a participation certificate will be awarded. 6. Outstanding Performer Scholarships will be given to qualified entrants in solo classes in Piano, Voice, Music Theatre, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Guitar, and Speech Arts. Competitors must enter at least three qualifying classes (marked [SCH] as being Scholarship-eligible) and may enter more if they wish. Concert classes will be considered as one class for Scholarship eligibility. The top three qualifying marks will then be averaged to determine eligibility for the Scholarships. That average must be at least 85%. While decisions for marks in each class rest with the Adjudicator, the final determination of the Outstanding Performer Scholarships in each discipline will be based solely on the average of marks, which will be confirmed by the Festival Office. In the event of a tie, the Adjudicator will be asked to break the tie, and in that case the decision of the Adjudicator is final. 7. 8 Rose Bowl 1. The Junior Rose Bowl Trophy Competitions and Outstanding Scholarships Presentations will be held on Friday, May 3 rd, 2019 at 6:30 pm. 2. Competitors for the Junior Rose Bowl will be the Outstanding Scholarship winners in each discipline in grades 7 and 8, provided his/her top three marks average 85% or higher. In the event that the Winner is unable to compete in the Rose Bowl competition, the Runner-up, if qualified, may be given the opportunity. 3. The Senior Rose Bowl Trophy Competitions and Outstanding Scholarships Presentations will be held on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 at 6:30 pm. 4. Competitors for the Senior Rose Bowl Trophy Competition, the Outstanding Advanced Performer Scholarship winners (grades 9, 10 or Associate level) in each of Piano, Voice, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, and Guitar will be eligible to compete, provided his/her top three marks average 85% or higher. In the event that the Winner is unable to compete in the Rose Bowl competition, the Runner-up, if qualified, may be given the opportunity. As always, the Barrie Music Festival welcomes competitors and participants from all over Ontario in our Festival for the wonderful learning experiences available. In order to be eligible for competition in the Junior and Senior Rose Bowls, Competitors must meet at least one of the following criteria, as well as the eligibility rules: a) Competitor must have been a competitor in a previous Barrie Music Festival; or b) Competitor must reside or study music with a teacher in the counties of: Simcoe, Muskoka, Parry Sound, Kawartha Lakes, Durham Region, York Region, Peel Region, Dufferin, or Grey Final decisions regarding competitor eligibility rests with the BMFA. If you have any questions about your eligibility to participate in the Junior and Senior Rose Bowl, please feel free to contact the BMFA. Each of the Rose Bowl Trophy winners will be asked to perform at the Spirit of Music Showcase on Sunday, May 5 th, 2019 at 2:00 pm, as well as other performance opportunities throughout the year. Provincial and National Competitions Barrie Music Festival Association (BMFA) is a member of the Ontario Music Festivals Association (OMFA) and the National Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF). As such, BMFA is eligible to submit up to two names of competitors in disciplines from Grades 6 and up to represent the Barrie Music Festival at the Provincial competitions. The choice of performers is entirely at the discretion of the Adjudicators and is not necessarily the Outstanding Performer winners. To be eligible, competitors must have competed in at least two Scholarship-eligible (SCH) classes (and/or a Concert Group class that requires at least two selections) and have been awarded a mark of 85% or higher in at least one of those classes. In the Provincial Competitions, competitors must perform at least one selection that was awarded 85% or higher at the local (Barrie) festival. Winners at the Provincial level in Advanced OPEN categories may then be eligible to compete at the National Festival. Please see the Provincial Syllabus, available free at for full requirements. Prior to the Provincial Competition, competitors may be asked to attend a pre-provincials session. 9 Classes BRASS 1. Repertoire for graded or Conservatory classes must be chosen from the current Syllabus of either the Royal Conservatory of Music or Conservatory Canada. 2. All repertoire to be performed must be listed accurately and fully on the Registration Form, including Composer name, all relevant numeration codes. Where applicable, movement number and name must be provided. 3. Studies may only be entered in the Study Classes, unless otherwise indicated. 4. All competitors must clearly choose Competitive or Non-Competitive on the Registration Form 5. Scholarships are available in the following categories, ONLY if Competitive is chosen on Registration Form: Beginner Pre-Grade 1 & Grade 1 Primary Grades 2 & 3 Junior Grades 4 & 5 Intermediate Grades 6 & 7 Senior Grades 8 & 9 Advanced Grade 10 & Associate 6. All Solo Classes must be accompanied by acoustic piano only, where accompaniment is indicated. 7. Accompanists and page turners are to be arranged by the competitor. 8. 11 CHOIRS For the purpose of staging, please indicate on your Registration Form, the number of people in your choir. 2. Total performance must not exceed 15 minutes 3. Choirs are grouped as School, Church, Community, Youth, Barbershop and Seniors. Please make note of your classification on the Registration Form. 4. In all Elementary School Classes, the Adjudicator will work with the director and choir immediately after the performance as part of the adjudication. 5. 12 PROVINCIAL / NATIONAL CLASSES FOR CHORAL GROUPS To be eligible for Provincial and/or National recommendation, ONE of the following classes must be entered. There must be 2 contrasting pieces, ONE of which may contain a brief solo or solo ensemble passages. The total number of bars of the solo or solo ensemble passages must not exceed 10% of the total score. In classes limited by an upper age, 5% of the members may exceed the age limit by not more than 2 years All selections must be memorized. ALL classes are considered competitive. 13 COMPOSITION 1. Please indicate on the Registration Form the instrument(s) and/or voice used on the score of each composition. 2. A written copy of the score MUST be submitted to the Festival Office no later than Monday, March 25 th, 2019 so that it can be forwarded to the Adjudicator. 3. The score can be hand written or computer generated, using any music scoring software. 4. If submissions are improvisatory, please provide a sketch or lead sheet on the same timeframe 5. Competitors and encouraged to perform their own composition at the Festival however, if the piece is being presented electronically, the equipment required to play it is the responsibility of the entrant. 6. Arrangements may be for any combination of voicing or instrumentation. Sources of the melody/theme/lyrics must be acknowledged. 7. Competitors will participate in one of the following categories: Junior (aged 10 years and under) Intermediate (aged 17 and under) Senior (aged 18 and over) 8. Each entrant may enter a maximum of two compositions in any section for one fee. They may enter as many times as they wish. 9. If the composition is based on an existing theme, the original theme must be submitted along with the composition. 10. 15 ENSEMBLES Band Information 1. All ensembles will be evaluated on a National Standard of Performance. Musical integrity will be the basis of adjudication 2. Stylistic interpretation, intonation, dynamics, attacks, releases, articulations, balance, time, mood, improvisation, instrumentation and the variety, quality and appropriateness of repertoire will be under consideration. 3. Two selections are required. Own Choice selection of a suitable level of difficulty and in a contrasting style. 4. Strict time limits will be enforced with penalty to overall score for exceeding them, as follows: Grades 1, 2 & 3 15 minutes Grades 4, 5 & 6 20 minutes 5. 31 VOICE 1. Repertoire for graded or Conservatory classes must be chosen from the current Syllabus of either Conservatory Canada or the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). A combination of the two Conservatory lists will be allowed. 2. All repertoire to be performed must be listed accurately and fully on the Registration Form, including composer name, all relevant numeration codes, and where applicable, movement numbers and names. 3. All Voice entries must provide their own accompanists. The accepted instrument of accompaniment is the Piano, which will be provided. Any alternate accompanying instrument must be noted on the Registration Form and be approved by the BMFA. Electronic accompaniment in not permitted unless specifically noted as an exception. 4. It is strongly recommended that original language be used in all performances and IS REQUIRED to be used in Concert Group classes, Operatic Solo classes, Mini-Lessons and Foreign Language classes. 5. Please note that any competitor will not be allowed to enter the same piece of music in both Vocal Solos and in Musical Theatre Solos. 6.
