1 WYCF General Grant Application Reviewer: Distribution Committee Program Area: Arts ORGANIZATION INFORMATION Powder River Symphony Director: Ms. Mary Landreth Gillette, WY Phone: Mission The mission of the Powder River Symphony is to enrich the cultural lives of adults, expand the musical horizons of children and provide an outlet for the creative talents of musicians living in Wyoming by performing classical and "pops" music for an expanding audience. History Founded in 1986, the Powder River Symphony serves the citizens of the greater northeast Wyoming region. A cultural resource, the orchestra consists of a combination of local musicians, paid professionals, and a paid conductor. The mission of the PRS is to enrich the cultural lives of adults, expand the musical horizons of children, and provide an outlet for the creative talents of musicians living in Wyoming. With the population expansion, the PRS serves and improves the quality of life to an ever increasing number of citizens. In order to allow as many children as possible the chance to be exposed to live orchestral music, children eighteen years and younger are provided free tickets for each of the four season concerts. PROJECT INFORMATION Board Participation: 50% Requested Amount: $6, Program Name: Concert Season Summary The Powder River Symphony, which began over 30 years ago, is requesting financial assistance to support the four concert season. Concerts will feature local musicians, music educators, and students in varied programs to engage the public. The season will also include educational outreach activities in the schools. PROPOSAL NARRATIVE Description The Powder River Symphony (PRS) founded in 1986 is a Wyoming cultural resource, that received 501 c 3 designation in The mission of PRS is to enrich the cultural lives of adults, expand the musical horizons of children and provide for the creative talents of musicians living in northeast Wyoming. PRS presents a program of 4 concerts each year at the CAM PLEX Heritage Center in Gillette, Wyoming. The orchestra consists primarily of local volunteer musicians, local and regional paid professionals, and a paid conductor. During , the orchestra continued its series offering four live concerts in Gillette under the direction of Guest Conductors: Mark Elliott Bergman from the Sheridan Symphony, Steven Trinkle, a previous conductor with the Powder River Symphony, and Christopher Hahn, the conductor for the Black Hills State. The first concert of the season will be held in November, the annual holiday concert will be in December, and the third concert will be held in February with the final concert held in April, Steven Trinkle has agreed to a 1
2 five year contract giving stability to the ensemble. He, along with the Board Members, will work closely with local and area musicians, recruit guest artists future concerts and increase connections through the schools and business community. Coordinating with music teachers at area elementary and middle schools, Trinkle will visit local schools, perform and teach students about music, and encourage students to perform with the orchestra. These programs have been well received by students, parents, and teachers, and increases the interest in PRS concerts. The PRS Board works diligently to promote the orchestra to a diverse audience from all income levels. Free tickets are provided for children under age 18, Gillette College students, local Senior Citizens, and other groups throughout the year. Reduced tickets are provided for all military personnel. Expected Outcome and Sustainability PRS serves a very rural area encompassing an expansive geographic region that is sparsely populated. Students and citizens do not have easy access to classical performances, guest/professional artists, or professional development activities available in cities close to large population centers. As a primary cultural resource for the area the orchestra seeks to serve the region by providing local musicians with opportunities to continue practicing their art form, featuring selected guest artists with high artistic excellence that are capable of offering educational outreach to the schools, and providing performance experiences for local talented students in the community. If successfully implemented, the series will fulfill one of the most important goal's of the Symphony: to enrich the quality of life within the area's communities and schools. PRS's season will include the following schedule: 1) November 5 "Celluloid Tunes" a program of music from the movies including the "Vertigo Suite" by Bernard Hermann, "Batman" by Danny Elfman, "Jurassic Park" by John Williams, "The Big Country" by Jerome Moross, and "North by Northwest" from the Hitchcock movie; 2) December 10, "Deck the Hall" in a collaboration with a community choir, 3) February 18, "Great Things Come in Smaller Packages" highlighting the individual sections of the orchestra in medium sized ensembles, and April 15, "Spring Gems" featuring incidental music to the play Sigurd Jorsalfar, Op. 22 and Wedding Day at Troldhaugen by Edvard Grieg. Symphony activities will also include an annual fundraiser of a Tour of Homes in early December, and a New Year's Eve Ball hosted at a local restaurant and sponsored by a local insurance agent/supporter. Measurement tools to gauge the success of the series include 1) a short survey placed in the programs at each concert, 2) feedback (informal and formal written responses) from local musicians and music educators, 3) an increase in audience numbers, and 4) an increase in local corporate sponsors. The music director, Mr. Steven Trinkle, is seeking to collaborate with local music educators to establish a process in which local talented music students regularly perform with the orchestra. Responses and participation by students, music educators, and parents will be important indicators of success in reaching the orchestra's goal as a community cultural resource. This project (the concert series) is an ongoing project that will need to be sustained through increased individual giving, business and corporate sponsorships, and government support. While state revenues may ebb and flow, it is anticipated that strengthening the annual series will come about through an increased number of sponsors, expanded audience development, and additional partnerships in the region. Although plans to establish an endowment for the orchestra are being considered, the current economic climate may not make this feasible for the long term. PRS will continue to solicit funds in order to remain financially viable. Collaboration The PRS works cooperatively with 1) the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, The Fremont Symphony, and the Sheridan Symphony by utilizing some of the same musicians and loaning print music between the three 2
3 organizations; 2) the Campbell County School District (CCSD) coaching and encouraging students to perform with their teachers in the orchestra, 3) musicians from Cheyenne and Laramie, and 4) the CAM PLEX Heritage Center. CCSD helps to host educational workshops and clinics, and several of the string educators will work with the PRS Conductor to coordinate performances that include students. PRS also offers an annual scholarship to graduating seniors and free tickets to performances. The CAM PLEX Heritage Center has provided performance space for the PRS for more than 15 seasons and helps to coordinate educational programs for K 12 students by jointly sponsoring guest artists for performances and educational outreach activities that assist in fostering audience development. Budget Narrative The economic downturn and decline in state, county and city revenues in Wyoming has resulted in the loss of some long standing supporters needed to underwrite the season including the City of Gillette and several corporations. Grant funding will be used as a match with Wyoming Arts Council funding to assist in covering the expenses for musicians, and providing recognition to the community by enabling the ensemble to increase business, community and foundation support within the region. The music director is seeking to expand the orchestra's number of local musicians and reduce dependence on musicians from out of state; however, in such a rural region, not every section of the orchestra is complete using local community members. A few additional musicians (10 15 depending on concert programming) need to be contracted in order to bring about a balanced orchestra ensemble and fill in those sections in need of additional numbers including double bass, cello, some violins, and a few winds and brass players. These are essential in order to complete the orchestra and their expenses will be covered through a WCF grant. Costs are estimated according to the local rate for per diems, travel expenses, and payment for musicians. Local hotels have provided a significant reduction in room rates for musicians imported to fill out the orchestra, however these costs must still be covered. Additionally, fees for the conductor need to be addressed as well as the purchase and/or rental of music, and other charges associated with concert production including, but not limited to, printing, program/poster design, insurance, office charges, ticketing fees, and advertising/marketing. The FYE_PL statement submitted for this grant is for since the PRS fiscal year ( )ends on June 30, With our new Music Director, the orchestra board anticipates a music more fiscally responsible approach to repertoire selection and use of local musicians. 3
