1 2019 Camper Information Welcome! Welcome to Northwest Missouri State University and to the Northwest Summer Music Camp! We hope this week is a fun and educational experience, and we are excited to have you on campus! Addresses and Directions Sunday, June 9 Resident and commuter check-in Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building, Fine Arts lobby See First Day Schedule for assigned times. For registration, park in Fine Arts Parking Lot 1, located on 3 rd street with entrances on both Ray Ave. and Munn Ave. Highlighted in yellow on the campus parking map. The main entrance to the Fine Arts Building is located facing College Avenue/4 th Street between N. Ray Ave. and Munn Ave. See Item 25 on Campus Map. For information on the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building including pictures, visit our Interactive Campus Map. Residence Hall Day Camper Check-in/Check-out Hudson/Perrin Hall is located on University Drive between 4th street and 7th street. See Items 32 and 35 on Campus Map. Students will check-in to Camp, audition for ensembles, and then move into dorms Students in dorms will be separated by gender, and by floor. Roommate requests will be honored whenever possible, but are not guaranteed For information on Hudson/Perrin Hall including pictures, visit our Interactive Campus Map Fine Arts Parking Lot 2, Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building, Located on North Ray Ave to the West of the Fine Arts Building. 2 Ensemble Auditions Ensemble auditions will take place Sunday afternoon during the registration time and as notated on the schedule. Auditions for band students will be held to determine chair placement in ensembles, and will consist of: 1. Major scales (chosen by the person listening to your audition) with key signatures up to four flats 2. A full range chromatic scale (at the student's current ability level) 3. A BRIEF excerpt (two phrases maximum) from a solo of the student's choosing 4. And a BRIEF excerpt (maximum two lines) from an etude of the student's choosing If your solo is slow and melodic, choose a technical etude that demonstrates your technical facility, or vice versa. Younger and less experienced musicians may use material from a band method or technique book used in their regular school band class. Check with your band director to make sure the material you choose is appropriate! Choir participants will have a placement audition on Sunday during check-in time as well. You do not need to bring prepared materials for the placement audition. Students interested in performing in the jazz ensembles will need to audition on the instrument for which they would like to play in jazz ensemble. If possible, the student should prepare a piece from the jazz idiom for audition, however, the audition may also include sight-reading and/or improvisation. Talent Show Auditions Talent show auditions will take place on Monday after dinner. Students who are interested in performing on the student talent show should arrive prepared to audition. Please make sure to bring all necessary equipment for your talent show performance. (music, accompaniment CD, etc.) Please note, any accompaniment CD must be playable in a standard CD audio player. Private Lesson Registration & Payment Many of you reserved your student s private lesson online this year. If you reserved a lesson during registration, there will be a booth for you pay for the private lesson you reserved. o You must pay for the private lesson during registration otherwise it will be cancelled o Payments will be accepted in cash or check for the correct amount o The Pay to the order of line should be left blank on checks, but make sure the amount is filled in correctly If you did not reserve a lesson you may do so at the private lesson booth during the registration process.

3 Cell Phones/Communication Your students will not be able to receive calls/texts to their cell phones when they are in rehearsals or classes. They will also need to keep their cell phones off when they are part of an audience for a performance. WiFi Northwest Missouri State University does not provide WiFi access for campers. Sorry for any inconvenience, but our approval and device set-up requirements make this impractical for those here for a short stay. 4 Packing Suggestions What to Pack Musical instrument (case labeled with name!) Reeds, mouthpieces, mallets, sticks Other necessary accessories to play Folding metal music stand (labeled with your name!) band students only. 2-3 sharpened pencils Music for private lessons (if applicable) Bedding for extra length twin-sized beds 2 sheets 1 blanket (or sleeping bag) 1 pillow Alarm clock Bath and Toiletries Towels Washcloths Toothbrush Toothpaste Hair brush/comb Deodorant Other personal toiletries Clothing & Recreation 4 days of informal summer clothes (mostly shorts & T-shirts) Luggage labelled with name and address Raincoat, umbrella, or jacket Recreation equipment (optional): footballs, frisbee, etc.) Friday Concert black pants & white shirt, or solid black dress (with at least cap sleeves, and at least knee length), black shoes, black socks or black tights/hose Small quantity of snacks Money for incidental purchases (hint: $10 is probably too little; $100 probably too much.) Reeds, swabs, oils, etc. Vending machines Pizza Completed Agreement & Health Form Money for private lessons (if applicable) What NOT to Pack NO TV Sets or stereos NO refrigerators of any size NO hot plates or microwaves NO electric irons NO fans rooms are air conditioned NO skateboards, skates, or bicycles NO knives, weapons, or fireworks of any type NO ipods/mp3 players, ipads/tablets, computers or printers NO gaming systems of any kind (X-box, PS, Nintendo DS, etc.) NO valuable possessions, keepsakes items NO pets! NO canned or bottled drinks NO illegal beverages or substances of any kind REMEMBER: Pack lightly! You will have to carry everything to the dorm!

Students participating only in the choirs (not playing in band) need to be checked out of the dorms by 11:00am.
