Haydn / M. Haydn) 5 Regional Management Committee 9 Many hands make light work! By Dianne Hughes I was delighted to attend my first Reading last June, especially since it was a presentation of Carmina Burana. Many years ago, I heard it and was struck by the power of the music. For those who are not familiar with this work, Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935 and It is based on 24 of the poems found in the medieval collection Carmina Burana. (see CAMMAC Toronto Region Newsletter April-June 2012). My first exposure to Carl Orff was through his instrumentation for young children, the Carl Orff method. My mother, Betty Hughes, was a teacher and early proponent who studied with Doreen Hall at the Royal Conservatory of Music in the 1960s. My appreciation for Orff s work reached a pinnacle with the work in our Reading. I was thrilled by the richness of both the orchestral and choral material and the accomplished sound generated within a few diligent re-workings directed by the enthusiastic and talented conductor, Colin Clarke. He certainly brought out the very best in us. All activities and organizations require inner and outer support. I felt prompted to offer to assist, and after speaking with Gerald and Tim, I found myself a Member at Large and with our first Fall meeting, learning a great deal from all present. CAMMAC has brought real joy to many amateur musicians over the years. If you enjoy taking part in CAMMAC activities and would like to see them continue, or if you have ideas for new directions for our organization, please consider joining me! 2 SCHEDULE OF READINGS SEASON Once a month, CAMMAC singers and instrumentalists get together and read through a work for choir and orchestra under the direction of a professional choir director. Occasionally, readings feature pieces for singers only. Readings are not intended as rehearsals, and we do not perform for an audience, although listeners are welcome. All readings are in Elliott Hall, Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St, Toronto, and (except where noted below) are on Sunday afternoons from 2 pm to 4:30 pm. Admission is $6 for CAMMAC members and $10 for non-members. Please arrive 15 minutes early to set up so the reading can begin on time! October 21 J. Haydn, Te Deum and M. CAMMAC November 25 Reading features Cantatas 80 and 147 Here are some further music notes from Daniel Norman relating to the two Cantatas we will read through on November 25under his direction. BWV 80, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A Mighty Fortress is our God): This cantata originated as BWV 80a, written for the 3rd Sunday of Lent in Weimar in Of that six movement cantata, five movements were retained for what is called BWV 80b; revised and expanded for use in Leipzig in around Wilhelm Friedemann Bach ( ) changed the instrumentation slightly in the choral movements to include trumpets and timpani (we will read this version). The textual contributors are hymn texts of Martin Luther and Salomon Franck. Here is a link to the translation: BWV 147, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and Mind and Deed and Living): This cantata is interesting because Bach used the same source materials to come up with two distinct cantatas, one for the fourth Sunday of Advent in Weimar in 1716, and one (the one we will read through) for the Visitation of Mary in Leipzig in Salomon Franck, a frequent collaborator, wrote the majority of the libretto. The text tends to focus more on the benevolence and love of Jesus as opposed to focusing more on the status of Mary and the visitation. Perhaps a contributing factor was the differing view the protestant church had of Mary compared to that of the Catholic church. Here is a link to the translation: CAMMAC Toronto Region Newsletter October November

4 Praise for CAMMAC Readings Under the inspiring direction of Gerard Yun, CAMMAC members read through Gounod s Messe Solennelle de Sainte-Cécile on September 23. One year before, in September 2011, Gerard had led us through a work by Poulenc. Here, condensed, is an exchange between one participant and Gerard following those two readings. To Gerard, Sept. 18, 2011: I had to write to tell you what a wonderful afternoon I had today, discovering the works of Poulenc under your guidance and direction. And, you are such a delightful, inspiring person. Thank you so much! From Gerard, Sept. 18, 2011: Thank you for the kind words. I had an inspiring time. Was just writing a friend about the session and the organization. What a great thing CAMMAC has going! I sensed a sincere love and joy of music making. That is the best medicine for a "professional." To Gerard, Sept. 23, 2012: Well, it's a year later - and thank you - again - for a wonderful afternoon! I'm still recovering from goosebumps from such hauntingly beautiful music, and if it wasn't for CAMMAC and conductors like yourself, I might not have ever known of this music, yet alone had an opportunity to sing it (or at least try). I'm now trying to find a CD of it so I can play it often!... Love your approach and humour!! Such a fun day to start off the week! From Gerard, Sept. 23,2012: Thank you for your kind comments. I too am grateful for the opportunity to explore music with such enthusiastic and dedicated music lovers. Lynda Moon referred to a marvelous recording. It is an older one, conducted by George Prêtre and features Barbara Hendricks as the soprano soloist. It is available on itunes if you're into downloading music. Absolutely lovely recording. I hope to work with you once again. Have a wonderful year making music! CAMMAC Toronto Region Newsletter October November

6 CAMMAC Double Reeds Workshop, November 3 2:00 4:30 pm, Northern District Library, 40 Orchard View Blvd., Toronto (1st block north of Eglinton Ave, west side of Yonge St) We are fortunate to have Barbara Bolte leading the CAMMAC double reeds workshop on November 3. After graduating from the University of Toronto with an Honours B. Mus., Barbara was awarded a Canada Council Arts Grant to study with Heinz Holliger in Germany, followed by working with the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris directed by Pierre Boulez. On a whim she decided to move to London, England, where for almost 2 decades, she pursued an active free-lancing career, which included working with the Royal Opera Covent Garden, the London Philharmonic, English National Ballet, several of the BBC orchestras, as well as West End Shows. She also toured the world with the eclectic band, The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Barbara returned to Canada in 1994, and has worked with the National Ballet, the Canadian Opera, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, New Music concerts and various shows, as well as doing chamber music broadcasts for the CBC. She currently plays principal oboe with the Kingston Symphony and teaches oboe and beginner piano at Queen s University as well as in her private studio. We will work on some fundamental concepts of playing double reed instruments, and end with a Grand Finale of massed double-reeds. Anyone with an english horn is welcome to bring it for the final blow. Here is an outline of what we will cover: 1. Warm-ups: some suggestions for getting you and your instrument moving. 2. Breathing: a review of good breathing technique and some exercises to help you develop strong breath support. 3. Embouchure: what is the optimal placement of the reed, how and where to exert lip pressure, and some reed exercises to develop flexibility and strength. 4. Tonguing: how this works and how to produce more effective articulation. 5 Fingering: improving hand position, learning some new and alternate fingerings, and trill charts that everyone can use. If participants are interested in going over any problem areas in repertoire or band pieces, you are welcome to bring the material. Be prepared to play everyone can learn through your experience.
