1 Thomas Gorton Music & Dance Library The University of Kansas Lawrence, KS One library on the Kansas University campus is as focused on sound as it is words. As such, do not expect the librarians at the Thomas Gorton Music and Dance Library to go around shushing patrons for being too noisy... that is part of the place s function. Unlike some of the on-campus libraries that deal with hands-off rarities, everything in the Music and Dance Library is available to students. Located on the upper level of the south addition to Murphy Hall (Room 240), the Thomas Gorton Music and Dance Library contains about 80,000 books and scores, 25,000 sound recordings, 500 videocassettes, 8,250 microforms, and 400 current subscriptions to periodicals and other serials. The library also offers access to sophisticated research sources, including CD-ROM periodical indexes and dissertation abstracts. Materials support research and performance for master s and doctoral programs offered at the University, as well as the undergraduate programs in all performance areas including theater voice, dance, music history, music theory, composition, music education, and music therapy. The music portion of the library is especially strong in composers complete and collected editions and monumental sets, and is the leading music collection in the Great Plains region. The library has an extensive collection of performance and study scores for voice, solo instruments, and large and chamber ensembles. The Music and Dance Library opened in June 2000, integrating music and dance materials from the former Thomas Gorton Music Library, Anschutz Library, and Watson Library. The library is named for Thomas Gorton ( ), who was Dean of the School of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1975 and KU Professor of Music History from 1975 to his retirement in 1977.
