2 December 2010 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 12/3: Chorus Song Night featuring Bill Staines, Mara Levine & Caroline Cutroneo, Toby Fagenson, and Mike Agranoff Chorus Song Night is an annual event at the Minstrel that features a panel of song-leaders singing songs for the audience to sing. These will be familiar or easily picked-up songs with lots of opportunity for harmonization amongst a crowd of like-minded singers. Our panel generally features Folk Project member performers plus an outside ringer. And we are delighted to present as our ringer this year Bill Staines, a man whose songs have been sung by folk fans for 30 years. Our member performers are Mara Levine and Caroline Cutroneo, whose fine voices were 2/3 of the Belles Trio, Toby Fagenson, a rich resource of wonderful songs, and the Minstrel s program chair, Mike Agranoff. Fri., Dec. 10: Open Stage Our monthly Open Stage is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. Thursday, Dec. 30: Crowfoot and The Cotillion Singers Please note the special Thursday show, the night before New Years Eve. From the borderlands of Canada and New England comes Crowfoot. Nicholas Williams (flutes & whistles), Jaige Trudel (fiddle, cello), and English born Adam Broome (guitar, cittern) take the driving dance music and songs of their homelands and kick it into overdrive with their own unique and subtle touch. All three sing as well, and they deliver wonderful harmonies to the songs. And those of you who are dancers will be able to dance to their music the following night at our New Years Eve Dance for Swingin Tern. See for details. Our opening act tonight will be The Cotillion Singers, presenting a program of holiday-oriented vocal music. This is a choral group of roughly two dozen singers who get together annually to prepare a musical program for the Princeton Country Dancers Winter Cotillion. The music ranges from traditional carols to doo-wop to novelty pieces. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Please send items to Eddie Roffman, eroffman@optonline.net. Siobhan Scully, daughter of Jean, turned 18 at the end of October. Their motherdaughter celebration included a great Japanese dinner in NYC, and seeing American Idiot on Broadway. Cecilia Rowedder s sister, Jean, passed away in late October after a difficult battle with cancer. Barbara Moo s sister, Katy, succumbed to cancer during the middle of October. Both Cecilia and Barbara are greatly appreciative of the many messages of care, consolation, prayer, and support they received from members of their Folk Project family. One of Nancy and Russ Kelner s cats, Cookie, died in late September. Nancy saw that she was suffering, and the vet said her lungs were full of cancer. They are taking comfort, knowing that Cookie is no longer suffering. Jim Gartner traveled to Cleveland, Ohio in October, attending the Peace and War Summit. Jim said, It was a moving experience, attended by people from all over the globe; there were members of the military, Vietnamese, Native Americans and others, all searching for a workable path to peace. Jim recently performed a program called Songs of Peace at a Potluck for Peace dinner program in Morristown. Mark Schaffer, Eddie Roffman and Scooter Ferguson were quoted, publicizing the activities of the Folk Project, in a Morris Daily Record article about Doc s Kitchen in Denville, where they sometimes meet for breakfast. Mark helped Scooter celebrate his 48th birthday, going to Washington DC together for the Rally to Restore Sanity. They both say, We had a blast. Sandie Reilly s son, Matt, has started driving. He started out using a 120,000 mile car that he got from grandfather, until his aunt gave him a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird with 119,000 miles on it. Sandie and husband, Chris, also have cars with lots of miles; they seem to be competing to see who in the family can keep their car running longer. Sandie recently took part in a women s track bicycle racing competition at the Velodrome in Queens; needless to say, she won!...horses Sing None of It Blues Compilation CD Now Available! 5 Folk Project Board Meeting November, 2010 Board Meeting: The Summary The Directors of The Folk Project were shouted down into the semblance of order at 8:01 PM on November 9, at stately Schaffer Manor, in the hills of Rockaway. Present were Lois DeRitter, Scooter Ferguson, Jim King, Jim Gartner, Nancy Kelner, Allan Kugel, Evelyn Maurer and Ruth Wolfish (Trustees), Mike Agranoff, Carl Croce, Lori Falco, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Sandie Reilly, Chris Riemer, Pam Robinson, Ed Roffman, Bobbie Rosengarten, Bob Safranek, Mark Schaffer and Jean Scully (Other Board Members) and Joanne Cronin and Gloria Friedman (Guests). Absent were Pat Brangs, Connie Crawford, Brad Pryor and Rick Thomas. Chris had one correction and two clarifications for the minutes of October, and they were duly approved as amended. We slipped slightly into the red for the 10 months ending October 31, but Treasurer Ed Roffman is not concerned. We have plenty of money in the bank. We had an interesting presentation from Lori Falco on the Constant Contact engine. All of our activities now rely on for routine communications, but we have no common platform to support this function. Lori used Constant Contact to help promote the past Festival, and was pretty happy with it. So she s suggested that the board consider its feature set, and perhaps migrate our many mailing lists into this single, Web-based application. A good deal of discussion, but no decision at this time. We also agreed to make a donation to the ProBono Partnership, which has given us hours and hours of free legal advice since we first made contact with them in Otherwise, in the committee reports, we learned that: On the Publicity front, John Lamb, Allan Kugel and Rick and Cathy Thomas are making progress on various aspects of our new Web site, but we don t yet have a go-live date. We ll be featured in the next booklet printed by the NJ Department of Travel and Tourism, and may also get a mention in a future issue of Sing Out!. We discovered at Festival that the Minstrel s sound equalizer had failed. It was cheaper to replace than repair, so that s what we ve done. The Minstrel had a good month in October, although not the record-breaker that Mike had expected based on the quality of the shows. Mark put in a special plug for Diane Perry, who will be opening for Bucky Pizzarelli next March. Minstrel Staffing is going swimmingly well, according to Sandie Reilly. Scooter thanked her for her many years of service, and hoped that he ll be able to fill her shoes next year. Swingin Tern is one step closer to its young dancer outreach program, intended to target over 100 clubs and organizations and local colleges, having both assembled a contact list and written a draft communiqué. You may have noticed a new element on the back page of the newsletter, looking like a square of random dots and squares. It is called a QR code (Quick Response code) and represents an emerging way to provide digital information on printed matter such as newsletters, business cards, and signboards. In this case, the code on the back page simply encodes the Folk Project URL: To read it, one needs a smartphone with a camera running any one of a number of code-scanner apps. Once the camera has read the code, the app will offer to take the user to the Folk Project home page in the phone s web browser. Or, depending on the app, it could offer to add the URL to your list of favorite sites, or send it as an to someone else. To find a code scanner app for your phone, simply search for QR code in your phone s app store, download one of the apps listed, and try it out. There are numerous apps available now, so you might want to download several to see which you like best. And keep an eye out for these codes in your daily life. You should see them appearing more and more often. Winter Weekend 2011 Fri. Sun., March 4 6, 2011 Winter Weekend is the Folk Project at its most unrelentingly musical, most intense, most intimate and altogether most eccentric. We convene at a private home in upstate New York (a converted barn an hour from the NY/NJ border). There, we set up the People s Republic of Winter Weekend, a cooperative whose purpose is to provide music and feed (to excess) all in attendance. Additional activities include board games, knitting, snoozing on the sofa, hiking and cross country skiing, weather permitting. Attendance for sleeping over is limited (by the amount of heated areas in the house). Privacy is for sissies. Day trippers are encouraged.
