6 President s Page Matt Barkley Come to the Conference! I hope everyone is having a great start to your second semester. To be honest, mine has been quite busy planning this year s conference, but it has been fun to watch this come together. I am looking forward to seeing you here in Coeur d Alene, April Hopefully the snow will have cleared by the time April arrives! I m sending out this note just as an update so you know what to expect for this year s conference. We have some big names coming to present sessions like NAfME National President Scott Schuler, NW Division President Sean Ambrose, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, ASTA President Kirk Moss, and former NW Division President and candidate for NAfME President-Elect David Weatherred. Plus we are utilizing the many great professors that we have here at our great universities. We will also be having great performances by some of the best school performing groups in Idaho. This year s concert hours will be held at The Salvation Army Kroc Center in Coeur d Alene. They have a state-of-the-art performance venue that will be perfect to show off our great ensembles. ( This center is a short 1 mile drive from the conference hotel and about 2 miles from the North Idaho College campus which is hosting the All-State Honor Groups. Registration is now available on-line thanks to the help of our own webmaster Wayne Millett, NAfME, and the Washington Music Educators Association. You can make your hotel reservations now at our conference hotel, The Best Western Coeur d Alene Inn, ( Please make sure to mention that you are part of the IMEA Conference in order to guarantee your rate at the discounted price of $79 per night. As many of you know, Coeur d Alene is known for its famous golf course with the floating green. If you think you ll be in the golfing mood, they have made available discounted green fees at The Coeur d Alene Resort Golf Course for $89 the Wednesday before, and the Sunday after the conference. The green fees include golf, cart, and a caddie. Golf lessons are extra! Keep checking the website for updates. And please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks, Matt Barkley, President, IMEA Conference Registration FAQ s On-Line Pre-Registration will be available for the first time this year. The link is located on the IMEA web-site. We strongly encourage everyone to pre-register for the conference at a substantial savings! In order to register on-line, you must be a current NAfME (MENC) member. The log-in requires your 9 digit NAfME membership number and your last name as printed on your card. On-Line Pre-Registration must be completed before March 30, Credit cards will be accepted. (You may also send a school or personal check. Purchase Orders will not be accepted!) If you are mailing your registration, print a hard copy of the registration form off the IMEA web-site to complete and send with your payment, or use the form on the opposite page > Included with your Conference registration will be tickets for the district luncheons held on Thursday; the banquet held Friday evening; both GALA Concerts Saturday afternoon; exhibits; and all conference sessions and concert hours. Content Area luncheons will be held on Friday for an additional charge. We request that you purchase these tickets with your pre-registration. Additional tickets for the luncheons, banquet, and GALA Concerts are available with your pre-registration. (A limited number of luncheon and banquet tickets will be available on-site, so please plan ahead.) Refund requests (minus a 25% processing fee) must be received by March 30th. If your district is paying only for certain items, and you would like to pay personally for other options, please call the WMEA office by March 30, 2012, to get pre-registration prices. NORTHWEST CONFERENCE IN PORTLAND, FEBRUARY 2013 As you know, the next NAfME Northwest Division Conference will be held February 14-17, 2013, in Portland. Plans are well under way to make this the best-ever event. But we need YOUR proposals so we can be sure to present sessions that will meet the needs of our teachers. We will be taking session proposals until April 15 at < There are three types of proposals you can make: 1) you can propose a session that you would like to present; 2) you can propose a topic that you would like to see, but ask us to find a presenter for that topic; or 3) you can propose a presenter that you would like to see, along with a topic for him/her if you wish. Once proposals close, topics will be screened, ranked, and ultimately scheduled. For the Bellevue conference, we had approximately 300 proposals, of which 125 were selected. While nearly all the proposals would have produced great sessions, balancing topics for the final selection (coupled with available space) means that your selection committee needs many choices so that a truly complete conference can be offered for you and your peers. The deadline is April 15, 2012; don t wait and get so busy that you forget! Go to the website NOW and make your wishes known. It's easy, it's fast, and it's important! Then mark your calendar and plan to attend the 2013 conference. It will be the best yet (thanks to you)! 10 North By Northwest NW MENC President Sean Ambrose Conference to Conference Over the past four months, it has been an incredible pleasure to spend time in four of the Northwest states at your MEA conferences. At the time of this writing, I ve just departed Yakima and the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Washington Music Educators Association. My travels thus far have confirmed what predecessors have said: each state is very different in the ways the conferences and activities have developed over the years, but they all have their own unique intensity and vibe. The unifying theme is that wherever you go in the Northwest, Music Educators are passionately committed to delivering a high quality Music Education to every child. Yakima was the most recent stop on this journey. The travels that started in Billings and continued on to Anchorage (have you heard they are having one of the worst winters in the past 20 or so years) and Evanston, Wyoming, for my home state conference have confirmed in my mind that we are an amazing group of people. I m still rather frustrated that I was unable to get over to join my friends in Oregon, and guess I will have to try and figure out a way to get there for their conference in 2014 despite having passed at that point. Hah! Coeur d Alene in April will wrap up the state MEA conferences for our Division this year. What continues to impress me about all of these experiences is the sense of family and collegiality that happens at every MEA conference, no matter how small or large. For those of you that go to other professional conferences, you can attest to the fact that they simply are not the same, nor do they have events scheduled from 7:00 am till 10:30 pm everyday like we do. I think we are the lucky ones! On the Horizon: Portland! Yes, I know. It is still 12 months before we will gather together for what may be the largest Music Education Conference in the history of the Northwest Division, but now is the time we need all of you to be thinking about what you would like to hear, learn, see, experience, and take away from that event. Your state leaders are going to be serving as the screeners and key personnel in the creation of the Professional Development component of this conference, but we need your assistance with some very specific tasks now to be able to provide exactly what you want in February of First of all, we need you to give us ideas on specific sessions you would like to see at the conference, or that you would like to present. Our session proposal system has the ability for you to provide us with suggestions, even if you do not want to be the presenter. If you have been to an amazing professional development activity that you would like to see done again in Portland at the division conference, then all you need do is go online to our submission link, and give us the details. The staff and leadership will do the work from there. Of course, we have amongst our own membership some of the most knowledgeable and articulate people in the field in all aspects of Music Education, so please consider proposing a session that you would like to do yourself as well! Traditionally we get a number of auditions from secondary and collegiate Band/Choir/Orchestra, but rarely enough from non-traditional ensembles nor from our less populated states (yes, I'm talking to my colleagues in Wyoming now). It isn't just Wyoming though; we would love to have multiple choices from all 6 states in the division with as much diversity of style and ensemble that we can get. Elementary and MS/JH submissions tend to be very few, as do those of the type we are now referring to as IN-Ovations, which covers just about anything you can dream of. There are amazing ensembles in this division and top notch student, collegiate, and adult musicians. Please consider bringing a group to Portland: the first step is to submit the audition. The links that have the information for both of these items can be found on the NW division web page at and the deadlines are April 15th for proposals, June 2nd for auditions. Have we mentioned Professional Development yet? Just in case you haven t yet heard, there is a gathering happening in Baltimore on June that your state leadership will be attending, and you are invited to come along! Music Education Week will take place at the Baltimore Convention Center in the Inner Harbor, which is a fantastic area of dining, shopping, sports, nightlife, and this year incredible Professional and Leadership Development for Music Educators. We will once again have students from the Northwest represented in the National Honor Ensembles that will perform in the Kennedy Center, and your state leaders will engage in the advocacy and organizational training that keeps us at the forefront of arts education policy and development in the eyes of the national government. 12 Specialist s Space Peggy Wenner Fine Arts Specialist, Idaho State Department of Education National Endowment for the Arts Leadership Conference As you may recall, last year the State Department of Education and the Idaho Commission on the Arts wrote an application to the National Endowment for the Arts to participate in the Education Leadership Institute, a week of professional development sponsored through the NEA. Idaho was one of five teams selected; our team consisted of the following individuals: Idaho Superintendent of Instruction Tom Luna (proxy, Dr. Peggy Wenner, SDE Arts and Humanities Coordinator) Coeur d'alene District Superintendent Hazel Bauman Idaho State Representative and House Education Committee Vice Chair Mack Shirley Idaho State Representative Cherie Buckner-Webb Idaho Commission on the Arts Commissioner Sally Graves-Machlis Idaho Commission on the Arts Executive Director Michael Faison Idaho s team convened with like-teams from many other states to participate in sessions led by national education leaders, and to identify strategies to support arts education in our prospective states. Inspired by the Institute, our Idaho team drafted a resolution for consideration by the Legislature and Governor in support of arts education for Idaho students. As you know, the arts are a part of Idaho s Content Standards, and educators have long incorporated those standards into their curriculum. Once in a while, elected officials get the opportunity to come together around our common values. The draft resolution is a unifier, around which everyone can gather and celebrate, acknowledging the significant role of student-learning and achievement in Idaho s arts curriculum, in building the educated Idaho citizenry and creative entrepreneurs upon which prosperous communities and profitable businesses are founded. It recognizes the importance of sequential instruction in the arts curriculum and the use of arts learning across academic curricula. We requested feedback from education stakeholders, including the Idaho Art Education Association, Idaho Board of Education, the Idaho Department of Education, the Idaho Education Association, the Idaho Music Educators Association, the Idaho Speech Arts Association, the Idaho PTA, the Idaho School Superintendents Association, and the Idaho School Trustees Association. These peers were supportive and provided insights that were incorporated into the draft. Then, stewarded by our capable Representatives Shirley and Buckner-Webb, the draft proceeded to the Legislature for consideration, starting with the House Education WINTER 2012 Committee. The resolution unanimously was sent to print, for placement on the House of Representatives reading calendar. As of today's writing, Feb. 23, we now can visit a link to the Idaho House Concurrent Resolution 39, urging support of Idaho students learning in the arts. This child-centered approach combines speech, movement, and song in a creative playful atmosphere where students experience the elements of music in an active way. The daily program will include approximately three hours of pedagogy, one hour of alto recorder, 75 minutes of basic movement and a special topic. Instruction will review Level One techniques with further exploration of the following areas: mixed and uneven meters, harmonization to include the moving bordun and chord change accompaniments, movement and instrumental improvisation, extended forms. Students will teach a short lesson demonstrating Orff process. Level Two is restricted to those who have completed an AOSA approved Level One course. This course meets all requirements for Level Two certification by AOSA. 15 Susan Mann & Allen Tripp Inducted into the IMEA Hall of Fame as choir director at BHS, she also served as advisor of the awardwinning Blackfoot High School Bronco Yearbook, developed and taught an advanced (AP) music theory /composition class, and served as Blackfoot High School Fine Arts Department Chairman. From , Susan, in partnership with Idaho State University, produced the ISU/BHS Renaissance Holiday Feast. Over 100 students were involved in the event each year. She organized the Susan Mann and Allen Tripp were inducted into the IMEA music, costumes, ticket sales, and logistical arrangements for all students. After 2000, she moved the Feast to Blackfoot High School and Hall of Fame by IMEA dignitaries before an appreciative audience of over 500 people on December 19, 2011, in Blackfoot. IMEA Hall of oversaw the event working with hundreds of volunteers. Famers Joe Willes and Alan Stanek joined IMEA Past-Presidents Camille Blackburn and Dan North in presenting Susan and Allen with build an auditorium at Blackfoot High School. That meant working Her productions of all-school musical revues helped raise funds to their Hall of Fame medals. She organized the 1998 and 2000 Idaho Music Educators Conferences in Boise and Idaho Falls. From 2000 to 2010 Susan served as Adjunct music instructor at Idaho State University, where she taught private voice and group voice, and accompanied voice students. 16 What s New in Music Technology 2012: A Report From NAMM By Mike Klinger This was the first year in the past 7 years that I was unable to physically attend the Winter NAMM show in late January. I really missed going not only to see all of the new stuff coming out but to also get away from the 10 of snow here in Carson, WA. Nonetheless, I did do a lot of research for you as always and spoke with a lot of my colleagues who did attend to get their views as well. Music Apps The ipad is developing into quite the arsenal for a lot of things. including music. I have decided to share some ideas and links with you on my findings. NoteStar is Yamaha's app for ipad designed to provide keyboard players with the experience of playing with their favorite songs with a real band. The app provides smooth flowing, easy-to-read sheet music accompanied by real backing bands and vocals. NoteStar is a free download from the App Store and each song sells for $3.99 USD. It is available immediately in 28 countries including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Yamaha also demonstrated their new, free iphone/ipad app, Piano Diary, at Winter NAMM Yamaha developed the app as a tool to both motivate and enhance daily piano practice and performance by students, intermediate players and advanced hobbyists alike. Compatible with any MIDI instrument, it's designed to help users manage, archive and share piano performances. Piano Diary is a free download from the App Store. Following are some music app links for ipad, Smartphone, etc. for you to check out from some of my colleagues: Other interesting hardware of note for the ipad includes the new Yamaha i-mx1 $69, is a MIDI interface cable which enables ipad / iphone to be connected to any MIDI instrument. There is no difficult setup, simply connect i-mx1 between ipad / iphone and a MIDI instrument such as synthesizer, electronic drum kit, digital piano before launching the Apps from your ipad / iphone. You can play and control the Apps sound using the real interface of the instrument. I am personally really excited about this keyboard being used for a keyboard lab environment because not only does it contain the new Supernatural Piano sounds and the Ivory Feel-G keyboard, but it now is able to split exactly in half accommodating two students using the new Twin Piano mode. This essentially means you only need to buy 15 of these for a 30-student lab! I will be putting together some keyboard lab bundles based on this keyboard. Stay tuned! Roland also announced the release of its very first backing keyboard, the BK-5 $999 the latest in a series of Roland musical instruments with intelligent backing-track technology. Other features include 128 polyphony, over 1150 sounds, 60 drum kits, song playback, recorder, rhythm composer, video output, and audio input. 20 Great Basin Jazz Camp Signs Internationally Known Trombonist for July 9-13, 2012 The 5th Great Basin Jazz Camp had barely concluded when organizers announced a stand-out musician had signed on for Scott Whitfield, one of the most renowned trombone players of our time, will join the faculty for the sixth annual Jazz Camp to be held from July 9-13, 2012, at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. This presents jazz students with a unique opportunity to study with the man many critics consider the heir apparent to the legacies of Frank Rosolino and Carl Fontana. Whitfield is an in-demand arranger, trombonist, educator, and vocalist. Whitfield's discography includes seven recordings as leader, and more than fifty recordings with other artists. Whitfield served on the jazz faculty at Rutgers University from 1998 to 2002, teaching trombone, composition and arranging, and improvisation, while also coordinating the school's combo program. Camp Executive Director Mike Allen said having Whitfield at Camp shows we are committed to the best teachers and best instrumentalists. Officials also announced an upgraded scholarship program for local students. More scholarships will be available than in previous years. A fundraiser held during camp this past July raised awareness of the camp and its work with students from Idaho and nearby states. According to director Allen, the annual camp saw a small increase in students, including two more students from Australia. There will be a special tuition offer for all students on the camp website soon, but Allen stresses that students, especially trombone students, should make plans to attend the sixth annual camp because of the expected interest in Scott Whitfield. Allen also announced special scholarships for strong trumpet and trombone players as well. The Idaho Jazz Society, comprised of musicians and supporters of jazz in Idaho, called the camp the best in the West. The drummer for the legendary Sonny Rollins and Kurt Elling dropped by the Faculty Jam on Wednesday evening during Camp. Kobie Watkins and his wife had just returned from a tour with Rollins overseas, but wanted to see how the camp operated. Watkins left a strong supporter of the camp and its instructors. Allen also said that now is the time to place the dates on the calendar and make sure students remain free during the July dates for this exciting musical experience. Everyone should play the same piece. 2. Stop at every repeat sign and discuss in detail whether to take the repeat or not. The audience will love this a lot! 3. If you play a wrong note, give a nasty look to one of your partners. 4. Keep you fingering chart handy. You can always catch up with the others. 5. Carefully tune your instrument before playing. That way you can play out of tune all night with a clear conscience. 6. Take your time turning pages. 7. The right note at the wrong time is a wrong note (vice-versa) 8. Everyone will be very interested. 14. A true interpretation is realized when there remains not one note of the original. 15. When everyone else has finished playing, you should not play any notes left. 16. A wrong note played timidly is a wrong note. A wrong note played with authority is an interpretation. 17.
