2 OBJECT OF THE MASTER PROGRAMME CHAMBER MUSIC The object of the Master Programme Chamber Music is to broaden and complete the artistic preprofessional qualification in a chosen instrument of woodwind, piano or string chamber music acquired in a relevant Bachelor Programme. Following instruments are offered: Bassoon Flute Horn Clarinet Oboe Viola Violin Violoncello Piano ENTRANCE EXAM Permission to the Master programme Chamber Music is the completion of a professionally qualifying bachelor programme or an equivalent study at a recognized Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution and the successful completion of the entrance examination for the master programme ahead. Piano Solo: Group 1: J.S. Bach: one prelude and fugue out of the Well-Tempered Clavier or another one compositional comparable work from the baroque era Group 2: one sonata from Viennese classic (f.e. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert) Group 3: two etudes from virtuosity, one of them from Chopin Group 4: one bigger work from the romantic era or from the 20 th /21 st century All solo works must be played by heart. Two works from different style eras: one sonata with one string or wind instrument and one piano trio (piano, violin and violoncello) This program must contain one work from the Viennese classic Sight reading: A short test of the basic ability to directly convert sheet music into sound and musical form 2
3 String instruments Solo: Violin: Adagio and fugue from a solo sonata from J.S. Bach One caprice from Paganini, Gavinié, Rode etc. or one movement of a solo sonata from Ysaye 1 st and 2 nd movement from Mozart KV 218 or 219 (with cadence) 1 st movement of a big violin concert from the romantic era or the 20th century Viola: One slow and one fast movement of a solo work from J:S. Bach One caprice from Fiorillo or another comparable 1 st and 2 nd movement from Stamitz or Hofmeister (with cadence) 1 st movement of a viola concert like Bartok, Walton, Hindemith etc. Violoncello: One slow and one fast movement of a suite from J.S. Bach One caprice from Piatti 1 st and 2 nd movement out of Haydn C-major or D-major (with cadence) 1 st movement of a concert like Schumann, Dvorak, Elgar, Schostakowitsch etc. One sonata with piano or a duo, as well as at least two movements from following genres: string quartet, string trio or piano trio Sight reading: A short test of the basic ability to directly convert sheet music into sound and musical form Wind instruments Solo: One slow and one fast movement or two different etudes of your own choice without accompaniment (music sheets must be submitted) One bigger work from the romantic era or the 20 th century 1 st and 2 nd movement from Mozart: Bassoon: KV 191 Flute: KV 313 or KV 314 Oboe: KV 314 Horn: KV 417, KV 447, KV 495 Clarinet: KV 622 One sonata with piano or duo as well as at least 2 movements from following genres: trio, quartet or quintet Sight reading: A short test of the basic ability to directly convert sheet music into sound and musical form Admission candidates must organise their chamber music partners themselves. The Joseph Haydn Department of Chamber Music, Early Music and Contemporary Music offers help in finding chamber music partners, although it can offer no guarantees. 3
4 Proof of proficiency in German Candidates, whose first language is not German must provide evidence of proficiency in German before admission to the study. The following documents are accepted as proof of adequate proficiency: 1. Goethe-Zertifikat B1 from a Goethe Institute examination centre 2. ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ZB1) from an ÖSD examination centre 3. A pass certificate for a German test taken at the mdw (register at deutschtest@mdw.ac.at, registration deadline and appointment are available after application for the entrance exam) The ÖSD Central Examinations Office ( and the Goethe Institute ( both maintain lists of authorised international institutions and language schools that hold examinations for the B1 certificate. Sample papers can also be obtained from the above websites. Where possible, it is recommended that candidates obtain a German proficiency certificate in their home country before taking the entrance examination. 6 MASTER THESIS In the master programme, an artistic Master Thesis must be submitted. Students are entitled to submit a Scientific Thesis instead of the Master Thesis. While the main emphasis is laid on the artistic part, the artistic master thesis also includes a written thesis. This written thesis must elucidate the artistic part. The artistic Master Thesis may have different forms: Public performance of a piece of music or a group of works (at least 20 minutes) A documentation of a performance on a recording medium If a student chooses to write a scientific Master Thesis, it is compulsory for them to attend the Seminar for Master Students instead of the Workshop for Master Students. MASTER EXAMINATION The Master Examination serves to provide evidence of having attained artistic maturity. The precondition for being able to take the Master Examination is the successful completion of all the compulsory subjects and of the elective subjects as well as the attainment of a positive mark for the Master Thesis. The Master Examination comprises two parts: Part 1: Performance in front of the examination committee Part 2: Performance in form of a Concert Both parts are to proof the artistic and technical accomplishment of the repertoire of different styles as well as to perform on podium mature. ACADEMIC DEGREE After successful completion of all compulsory and optional subjects, the positive rating of the Master Thesis, and passing the master examination taken in front of a committee, the programme of study is completed with the awarding of the degree of Master of Arts (MA). TUITION FEES For Austrian students and students who have the same status as Austrian students (citizens of EU and EEA Member States, as well as Switzerland), if their studies exceed the duration of a study phase plus 2 tolerance semesters: 363,36 per semester. For all other students including those who are stateless and those whose citizenship is undetermined: 726,72 per semester Information on possible grounds for a waiver or refund of tuition fees is available from the Department of Studies and Academic Services. In addition, the following fee is to be paid by all students once per semester: Mandatory membership of the Austrian National Union of Students ( ÖH-Beitrag ), currently amounting to 19,70 per semester. The Austrian National Union of Students fee is the same for both Austrians and non-austrians. 6
